Nice setup. I would recommend adding a moisture filter with an auto drain after the aftercooler to keep the tank dry. I added an aftercooler and 2 filters with auto drain before the tank and my tank practically never gets water in it and the air is nice and dry.
@HTMR

The unit has an auto tank drain that goes off every time the pump shuts down. The receiver is actually a really good at condensing water, since it has a lot of thermal mass.

He will have very little if any condensation with that after cooler..
Craigslist did me right! Picked up a Speedaire 7.5hp/80 gal for $1000. Old man was moving and had a full fledged work shop in the back of his property. I tried to work him down but he held his ground. Got it on my truck, had my electrician install a 240 breaker and NEMA outlet, started blasting everything I could and I am happy. It is truly a monster, loud but a monster.

@@HTMR Sounds like a good idea. It is kinda loud.
Compressor oil always looks clean because it's non-detergent. All the dirt settles to the bottom of the crank case. Best to change it once a year no matter what. Nice unit.
Another useful video. Thank you Matthew!
That was a great deal on the compressor ! I have bought and sold many over the years and Champion is a very good compressor. You will get many years of service out of that machine just do the maintenance and they last forever . My last purchase was a Saylor Beall 9000 on a 200 gallon tank that was in excellent condition I got from a surplus company for $1,299 . It has a 15 hp Baldor motor so I run it off of a rotary phase converter . It will fill up the tank to 175 psi in 4 1/2 minutes ! If you have the spare parts to sell let me know . Pedal down 😀
Fairly quiet too! Nice job! I need one of those compressors
@HTMR

I would say it is quieter than my 5hp. I also put a solberg silencer on it and even quieter now!
Man im glad you kept it
Nice very cool Champion you have there Matt! Paul
shop we know took the air filter off, and shoved a clear tube over a pipe nipple screwed in its place, and the hose went down into one of those come air filters, It took literally 90% of the noise from the sucking away. you can stand beside the compressor and talk on your phone now
You could just build a phase adaptor. We used to have a neighbor in a residential area that had a garage full of three-phase machinist equipment and used a phase adapter to run all his machenery. It may have been modified 3 phase. He used a small electric motor to do it.
@HTMR
10 күн бұрын
I want to increase the HP, so a new motor was needed and easier to go with single phase.
Is that new motor compressor duty rated? Compressors are very hard on electric motors and will eventually burn out a standard motor due to insulation failure. Compressor duty rated motors have higher rated insulation that can handle the excessive heat. I worked for a motor manufacturer for almost 40 years ad we saw a lot of motor failures with people that used a standard motor to run a compressor. These warranty claims would be rejected.
@HTMR
Жыл бұрын
Yes motor is rated for this application.
Hi again. I have a question about media and water proporsions. If i have 45liter tank of water, how much glass beads should i add? 10%15%?😄 Thanks!
Nice build, how did u determine the motor pulley size? I thought that compressor heads were rated for certain RPM maximums, therefore the need to calculate the pulley sizes to get the most out of the compressor without red-lining it.
@HTMR
Жыл бұрын
This pump is used in both 5&7.5hp units, just different RPM. Champion had docs on motor pulley size and RPM for all models.
I consider my self somewhat a MacGyver. Single phase/3phase Roto-phase converters are available but quite expensive. I've seen some infromation on the newer 3phase inverters and I believe they make the extra two phases with the amps required being out of phase with the primary. so the demand is less. Finaly if the government is going to mandate electric home heating and electric cars the power companies are going to haveto upgrade all their lines to supply power where they now are getting along just with single phase, so running 3phase to our homes should become more reasonable. you may want to hang on to that 5Hp 3phase moter for a future project LL&P
Did you get the right size pulley for that compressor? Seems a little fast for a Champion pump
@HTMR
Жыл бұрын
I found the pulley size and pump RPM for 7.5hp in some champion documentation.
I'd like to find a compressor pump like that and make a pto driven compressor and hook it to my 23hp tractor.
Well, as far as the motor. Instead of buying a single phase motor, you could also have bought a VFD with a single phase input which will then put it to 3 phase for the motor. That was just an idea. But some things that you have to know about sizing the VFD is you have to get one that will withstand the amp draw and the rated 5 HP motor.
@HTMR
5 ай бұрын
The goal was to spin the pump faster with a bigger motor and get more CFM. VFD won't do that.
Wow you got a great deal on the unit !! Did you use the same pulley from the old motor ? The dia will determine the speed of the air pumps ? what is the pump rpms running now ?

it is a very good practice to keep the pump RPM as low as possible, 1100 RPM is a good limit, after that, oil pumping often arises spoiling your tank and your air lines.
Great video! Hit up Castair for an auto drain or any parts and troubleshooting.

I got mine for 500 but don’t know if it works might have to swap motor for single face
How did you know the compressor would handle the 7 HP motor? I'm guessing the tank lists the max safe CFM. Keep up the great work!
@outerfroggy1
Жыл бұрын
The pressure switch would cut out the electric motor at a set PSI (usually around 120-130). The only consideration would be the RPM which can be adjusted with pulley sizes. You could plop a 25hp industrial beast motor on that thing and the compressor pump wouldn't care.
@HTMR
Жыл бұрын
The champion pump documentation has the RPM/CFM/pulley specs for both 5hp and 7.5hp. Tanks usually have a max psi rating, cfm does not matter.

@@HTMR I asked my question badly. I was really trying to get at the RPMs of the pump which I assumed increased with a larger HP motor. But you answered it, the documentation includes specs for the higher HP motor. That was definitely a great deal!
Hy there!First of all, thanks for all great content! So i am choosing between two specs of air compressors. One is 26cfm/71gallons 5.5kw and other is 39cfm/132gallons. 7.5kw Can you help me to decide wich one to buy specific for Vapor blasting. is it worth of spending two grand on a 7.5kw monster with 39cfm or its just waist of money cuz 5.5kw with 26cfm can do a great job? money diference is around 500 euros. Thanks for answer! best regards!:)

The price of wire has gone down a little. Buying extension cords will be expensive. You might want to buy some wire and make your own temporary cord until you can make other modifications.

I priced out wire vs. extensions cords and price was about the same. I bought ex cords for now and will be able to sell them later. I don't know if I will be putting a sub panel or simply a single 50A outlet in garage, however it is a project for a later time.
What a huge score on that compressor!! Why didn't you just wire the low oil level and the pressure switch in "series" to each other?

Just so you know, running the compression block on a higher rpm will lead to higher temps and greater wear and tear. The higher cfm requires different cylinders and piston arrangements. P.S. I design and manufacture compressors for a living.
@HTMR

@@HTMR Seems more like a case of false advertising wherein they used the same stock image. If you read the description, no specific information is provided about the cylinder or piston sizes. You can see how both the motors look identical as well. Sometimes companies can be lazy in taking professional photos of their products (I’m also guilty of the same). That said, it does mention running at a higher rpm. Could be a cost-cutting measure. The compressors that we manufacture have a whole separate block when we go to a higher cfm and motor rating. We do not run the block at a higher rpm cause it’ll just speed up the wear and tear. And since we engage in mostly B2B aimed at industries, we cannot afford such a blow to our reputation.

@@HTMR I’m not saying it wouldn’t work in a residential or workshop setting. It just wouldn’t work for my customers who rely heavily on the compressors and for extended periods of time. all your compressor is OK, the enclosure is really not OK, running a compressor is very like directly heating the appartment where it is located so on a long running time, the interior of the enclosude will become so hot that your aftercooler will become ineffective and of course the water separation will become ineffective.

You can accept cash as a seller and "mark as paid" in your dashboard. I have done it several times with local heavy items.
So let me get this right? You spend $600 on a new 7.5 hp motor and $200 on a mag-starter. Now you won't spend a little more for a small electrical box and wire togo to your basement, but you will buy more welding cord to go to the basement? Come on and pony up and never worry about this again. Who wants to have cords running to the basement and have to screw around with connections and crap, especially when you will need it right away for an issue.....
