7.3 Powerstroke Cold Start *Below Freezing*

97 F-250 Powerstroke hasn't started in over a week and hasn't been plugged in all winter. It runs pretty good for being 26 years old!!

Nice truck brotha, I commented on your jeep video a few weeks ago, I just started going through my jeep today and now I see this video, I’m a 7.3 PSD guy myself, our temps don’t get super low here in New Mexico but we do occasionally get down to 5 degrees fahrenheit, since I bought my 2002 F250 super duty 6 years ago the ecm has always had a issue where it never cycles the glow plugs so I installed a manual glow plug momentary push button I get in hold it for 15-20 seconds and it fires right up in the cold. I’ve done it to my old 6.9 and 7.3 IDI trucks too and I like the push button setup better, they have always started up in the cold easier with less cranking and cycling of the key

Welcome back to the channel🤣! These 7.3 Powerstroke engines are fantastic! They might not make a ton of power or fuel economy, but they just run and run and run. I’ve heard a lot about manual glow plugs on the old 6.9/7.3idi engines, but not on the Powerstrokes very often which is pretty interesting. It’s probably a more reliable setup than factory. Just last month I finally fixed the p1211 code issue on my truck that I had been dealing with for 2 years if you can believe it. Not only does it start up with one cycle of the glow plugs, but one revolution of the engine too. I’m sure you can also attest to the fact that if you take care of these trucks they’ll take care of you.👍

Maybe try cycling the key a few times to light the glow plugs

Before you start keying on and off, a little known secret of the 7.3 Powerstroke is that the glow plugs stay on after the light turns on and even after the engine has started. This is unlike the IDI diesels that actually cut the glow plugs off when the light turns off, but I assume that's because of where the glow plugs are located on those engines. Even then though, it's weird how I can get my 7.3 IDI to start even faster than that when it's cold, perhaps the Powerstoke may be due for a glow plug checkup if that's not normal for it to take that long to fire it up

Thank you! That’s good to know man! I never have even checked the glow plugs on my truck before so hopefully they’re all still in good shape. I’m jealous of your 7.3 IDI starting up easy. Mine takes about 2 minutes of cranking before it’ll fire up🤣😂.

@@ydocproductions5593 Well other than what I assume to be an aftermarket starter, my truck seems to have glow plugs in amazing shape. You might want to check yours on the IDI. Remember this: with an IDI, every start is a cold start (unless the engine has been warmed up)

You failed to mention the night time temps have been between 7 and 15 F and daytime averaging around 25F. That's a pretty good start at those temps.

I’m working on replacing the injector orings as we speak. So we’ll see real shortly if that was the issue.👍
