The owner's manual actually specifically states you should not exceed 85 MPH on light truck tires no matter what the limit is. My GPS speedo has clocked the old girl going 101 downhill with a tailwind. Those old 5.7s run forever but they sure ain't fast in a 5500 lb truck.

Man them 7.3 idi Ford motors in my opinion are one of the best sounding diesels ever made besides the Detroit 2 stroke series. An old boyfriend of my mother’s had an 89 f350 crew cab with the 7.3 idi, banks turbo, and a 5 speed tranny. The exhaust rusted apart right before the muffler so it was straight piped basically right under the cab. With open exhaust, damn thing sounded like a big block gasser with cherry bombs,

There was a such thing as a 1200 hp 6.9 idi and 1200 hp 12v then your talking about performance but a truck you can run motor oil through isn’t about performance nether is any diesel pickup you want to get work done with.

The only thing I would go as an *upgrade* is to change out the turbo for one that spools up fast, considering there isn't far to go on the tach. More boost at lower rpm's = higher horse power. It would make it considerably faster, while being able to lower the diff gear ratio's if you aren't doing any hauling.

@@danielmeyer4515 the biggest difference between the 7.3l idi and powerstroke is that the idi is built like a semi truck engine. A bigger iron block for a smaller power output engine. The service life on those idi's is over 1 million miles. The first gen powerstroke had a larger power output to weight ratio than the idi. They achieved this by re-working the heads, intake, fuel system and fuel injectors.

What I will tell you though, is the majority of it is starting out with a '94 turbo IDI injector pump and maxing out the fuel screw in the access hole. Then open the top of the IP up, pull the fueling assembly out and cutting short the idle spring, then tighten the fueling nut until the idle is as high as you can bear, this adds more fuel, especially up top, but also raises the rpm redline fuel cutoff. SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER REV. Then advancing the timing 3 degrees faster than factory. Then disable the pressure regulator on the turbo, I get 15psi routinely.

Man this thing is fast compared to my stock 93 idi. What’s your 0-60? I’m scared to get her above 2K rpm or even pegging to limiter. I never take her faster than 70mph, sometimes I go to 75-80mph for passing, then cruise at 70 at 2K rpm. I think on a good day w fuel additive/oil, she gets 20mpg hwy-16 city, maybe better not sure. I’m running bio fuel rn while diesel is expensive.

@@philje123 quicker in a tiny car, yes. This 7.3 may only make 275hp, but its putting out 600ftlbs of torque and moving a large 4x4 F250. Try to tow any large load with your 1.4 and you'll see where this engine shines. Also, these 7.3's will do over a million miles of heavy hauling without an engine rebuild. It's like comparing carrots and pencils. They're both long, thin and orange, but completely different uses.

I wouldn't say it's a tiny car. It's a Skoda Octavia estate (based on a golf but more the size of a Passat). And handles 3 adults, a dog, a boot full and 3 bikes on the tow bar. But yeah. It would struggle with a big trailer etc! That's not what it's designed for. Lol
