    Hi Nat, great interview. Credit to you to ride again even while dealing with shingles. Thoughts on Peak Torque and Hambini's (taken with grain of salt) criticism of AB Hollowcage?

  • @jrmhng

    @jrmhng

    Haha but why the Hollowcage? Didn't I hear you say they aren't great? I've had a Hollowcage and it's been unreliable. It can jump off the large jockey wheel. Happened to me a few times and eventually the carbon retaining clip near the large jockey wheel broke off. Bearings also had a shorter than expected life span. Spoke to my bike mechanic about it. Make sure you check the spring tension every few rides and take care when degreasing your drivetrain. Looks sick but I feel not worth the pain.

    @@davidlau2467 thanks David. It’s been and up and down journey riding post shingles and to those who have health issues, don’t give up on fitness and your love for cycling! Oooh the criticism of the hollowcage. I agree with PT’s assessment and i accept Hambini’s tear down video report. What I’ve found for myself is that performance wise, while it hasn’t exceeded my DA’s stock pulley, it hasn’t made shifting worse either. It has increased opportunities to have friendly banter with other riders and has also made my drivetrain quieter thanks to some rubber o-rings 😂😂😂 I don’t see it as an upgrade for performance and it really is in that sense, a bit of a waste of hard earned dollars, but if you want an aesthetic upgrade and have the cash to splash… why not spoil yourself even if it’s just for looks. 😅

    I don't get the complaint about snobbish riding groups who judge your equipment... There's all sorts of people/riders/groups everywhere and if you often interact with the snobs you're simply hanging out with the wrong group, there's no need to stereotype all sg riders just cos of them!

    @@acky3000 Most of the wheels made these days are of decent quality. One thing about this brand I know is their recall with carbon spokes after just one video of Hambini. Rims are made in China/Taiwan, spokes & hubs are the regular trusty DT Swiss/Sapim and assembled by another company in Singapore. No matter what CFD testing they claim to be doing, I doubt the price justifies the value you get from them. Companies like Lighbicycle/Farsports could pretty much build wheels to the specs we need for half this price. The only logical reason I feel these are priced the way they are is because of warranty and because distributors/local shops have their own margin on these wheels.

    The fastest aero “feeling” wheelset I’ve ridden so far are the new shimano ultegras c60. I’ve ridden quite a few carbon wheels and currently have a custom built carbon wheelset. One thing I noticed about the ultegras is that they’re stiff laterally but very flexy horizontally. My current wheelset that I spec’s to be stiffer has 28 spokes Sapim sprint front/back. When I’m coming down to a slow sharp turn down hill I noticed the front unlike the other wheels I’ve ridden doesn’t flex and rub the disc. What he said about cornering the bike is true that the bike as a whole flexes a lot.

  • @VeloGrapher

    @VeloGrapher

    5 ай бұрын

    Ooh, @@HarishChouhan that is harsh mate. Your points can be taken and put across all bike brands like Trek (made in Cambodia), Pinarello (manufactured in China), BMC (made in Taiwan), and many other brands that have a higher-than-average price point with critics who say the same. The criticism would hold water if you actually did test the wheels in question properly, and compared them with other top brands and perhaps the cheaper brands before making your statement. In a world where you mostly "get what you pay for," with most things like cars, cycling apparel, tech and in our case, bike parts... Ascent's pricing is fair and square. Their customer service to begin with is great and considering the design process as opposed to simply buying a mold from a factory, random carbon layup as opposed to optimised carbon layups and choices of weave, actual wind-tunnel testing as opposed to only using CFD numbers, and how they've gone all out with rider real-world testing before releasing their products. Manufacturers price their products to a target market and I would wager that Ascent has done the same, as I do with my small business. It is ultimately your decision to drop dollars on what you want or what you love, and in this case, if Ascent's wheels aren't within your budget then walk away from them (you don't need to diss them online). If you're still skeptical, I'm not here to change your mind, but have a look at Peak Torque's and NorCal Cycling's reviews if you can't get your hands on the wheelset to test. They've both provided real and honest reviews of them; they were what inspired me to actually give these wheels a go despite having some really good wheelsets to begin with, and I've not regretted :D And to end... if you have a problem with someone or a small business, go talk to them. Public forums aren't the place to air dirty laundry :)

    @@VeloGrapher I remember PT or Hambini mentioning the recall so don't think that's news, but yea bringing it up is pretty harsh, esp since all the major brands have them. I've met the Ascent guys, I don't doubt the design philosophy with the wider rims. I'm also a bit surprised at the negativity on their wheels.
