4 & 10. East peasy. 38/480 = 19/240. About seven seconds.

A nice example of a seemingly difficult problem that can be done in your head. 7/120 + 1/48 7/120 + 1/4/12 7/120 + 2 1/2 /120 14/240 + 5/240 19/240

Thank you for showing the steps that are necessary for producing an LCD (lowest common denominator). Because from now on, after having seen this video, I will know -without guessing- the procedures to use. Thanks for teaching how to 🎣 fish!

I did problems like this when I was about 9 years old 71 years ago, there was no calculators in those days. This problem was ridiculously easy you just need a common denominator and the first one that you see immediately is 480 .. It is not the lowest but it doesn't matter. So, 7/120 becomes 28/480 and 1/48 becomes 10/480. Add them up and you get 38/480 .obviously both 38 and 480 divide by 2 soi t is now 19/240.There is no other number that will divide into both 19 and 240 so the answer is 19/240. I took a lot longer to type this than I did working it out without writing anything.

Kind of a long way to go about finding the LCD. I learned it completely different.

lcd between 120 and 48 120 = 2 × 2 × 2 x 3 × 5 48 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 4 LCD = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 ×.4 × 5 = 480 7/120 = 28/480 1/48 = 10/480 added = 38/480 = 19/240 oops... LCD = 240 NOT 480 48 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 2 x 2 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 LCD = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 = 240 ✔️

James Conner is spot on. If I was ever taught that method of finding a LCD, which I doubt, I have forgotten it. I would have solved that problem by multiplying the original denominators and then simplifying the result until I got the answer. Much more work and much greater scope for error. More importantly, I would have missed learning an important concept/building block. When I understand the concepts at the outset, the talk bores me a little but when I have no knowledge of the concept, the talk is crucial.

@@jamesconner3437 first I teach and kids don’t listen that long. So don’t be talking so much show the work then make just necessary comments. You must keep kids attention, and when you talk too much, you lose their attention.
