6L80 6 speed torque converter 2014-2018 Silverado failure & fix

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

6L80 6 speed torque converter 2014-2018 Silverado 4x4 5.3L failure & fix. my truck has 146K miles and one day I noticed a slight hesitation and light vibrations al low speeds. these Transmission have this common issue and if not fixed in a timely fashion can lead to total "Torque converter Failure" which will 100% result in "total Transmission Failure". do your homework and look for a respectable and legitimate Transmission place. ask allot of questions. biggest problem if finding a Good trust worth Transmission Shop, GL my quote $2600 for a full Converter swap, and shift kit plus a few more replaced parts. "Trans GO " kits are great!

    These models gm trucks have these common problem of torque converter getting shot. They have a design flaw for the torque converter. Our 2018 chevy silverado torque converter went out at 120k miles. We chose to rebuilt it. The transmission specialist shop replaced it with an aftermarket redesigned torque convertor and also installed a separate cooler just for the transmission to extend the life of the tranny because these gm models also have these problem of overheating tranny fluid. Hopefully this fixes the problem. Listen to Scotty Kilmer and get a Toyota. Our 2006 Toyota camry has 370k miles with the original engine and tranny.

    I had this same issue and I put in a new torque converter and the issue was still there. It wasn't as bad but still noticeable. After having my transmission custom tuned, the issue was resolved. Torque converters are known to fail in the GM 6l80e trucks which does result in total failure but I feel it started with this tuning for converter slip to accommodate the DOD 4 cylinder mode.

    So doing the custom DOD tune will fix the rpm bounce? Cause my 2014 Chevy does that but it doesn’t vibrate.

    @esau5.3 it fixed my issue, at first I just out in a new torque converter but it would still do that annoying rpm bounce while driving. When I tuned it, it resolved that issue for me

    Just had a brand new servo gm 6l80 tranny and torque converter from the dealership and 100miles later it’s still doing it with exact rpm fluctuations and shutter rumble sound that lasts 1-1/2 seconds to 2 seconds and then repeat. It does it every gear at light throttle or when let off rolling to stop light. Ticks me off $8000 of work done and still there. I agree with the comment earlier that it’s programming issue

    If you don’t reprogram your TCM to either fully lock the TCC or not lock at all, the problem still exists as it is a programming issue besides the hardware issue of a overheating transmission system. You have to also fix or delete the cooler line thermostat and perhaps add another or more tranny coolers to your system. Very shameful on GMs part as every truck with these 6 speeds will have this programming issue.

    So which is better to have it on lock or to not… I tuned mine but I’m sure I didn’t mess with the TCC .. 18 LT 109,000 mi AFM delete, gov scratched, throttle boost and raised my idle RPMs slightly… she doesn’t fluctuate RPM like the video but I have noticed going up hill coasting it’ll act hesitant until it shifts to run up the RPMs and that was prior to the tune as well

  • @teagreen2220

    @teagreen2220

    @@robertcrippen9983 the TCC may be engaging in all gears which in my opinion is unnecessary. If you want you should only have it engage or lock in high gears like 5th or 6th. I don’t use lockup at all. I have not noticed any mileage degradation and I also have no problem pulling a trailer but I have no transmission thermostat and I run a huge surface area of cooler. At least you should have the lock be a solid lock in the gears you want, the stock program allows the TCC to never really be fully locked in an attempt to make it smoother I think but this causes unwanted wear.

    My 2009 Tahoe started doing this, was there any metal contamination when you inspected pan? Is a simple TC swap fine or has transmission damage already been done when this happens?

    Im not sure about a 2009 Tahoe as I don't own one but on my 2014 Silverado truck 5.3L V-8 the shudder was my first sign that I had a issue and my first move was do a full Transmission flush. after that didnt work I did a full Transmission & oil filter flush which requires to remove the oil pan. after that if you still have the isst ue I would look for a place you trust . its real hard to find good "honest" places for auto repair , do you homework. on mine it was the Torque converter and I was luck to find a good place where they diagnose and confirmed it was the torque converter . FYI they had to fully remove and dismantle my Transmission in order to be able to confirm and inspect that my Transmission was good and that it was only my Torque converter. Good luck 2k was the cost for a new torque converter and 4-5k is what I was quoted if it was the full Transmission rebuild

    In my case it was diagnosed as the torque converter not the transmission, but in your case the transmission may or may not good anymore. In my case upgrading to a quality converter fixed the shutter issue completely. It will run you about $1500-$2000 . But you should get 2-3 opinions b4 deciding what’s feels appropriate. GL

    I’m waiting on the call right now, I can recall one slight slip a year or two ago and nothing since or two years prior. I know my TC is shot but like you said I’ll have to wait and see how the residual damage affected the trans. I’ve heard from some solid trans guys that this trans and even tc is decent, it’s the factory tune and slippage allowed for DOD/afm that eats it up. I did request an upgraded Tc and I’m going to get it tuned for no tcc slip and all that see how it goes. I was quoted 1100 for tc replacement, 3500-4 for rebuild.

So Chevy wants me to spend +$50k for a new truck with the possibility of another issue they will refuse to repair as well? Well...no thanks.
