69. Yelvertoft to The Ashby Canal - Part Nine - Hawkesbury Junction to Hillmorton

It’s a bright afternoon when I set off after lunch from Hawkesbury Junction, where I get assisted passage through the lock and re-join the Oxford Canal. Shortly after, I’m delighted to pass a steam powered tunnel boat and eventually moor up in a favoured spot. Next day, I enter the Rugby environs through Newbold Tunnel. In a momentary lapse, I accidentally hit the bank where the canal narrows and the 'eagle eyed' may later spot another slight knock going under a bridge. I get unexpected help at Hillmorton Locks, firstly from a dedicated volunteer lock keeper and then from a delightful couple who were walking back to their boat (thank you all). I moor up just beyond the locks.

    Dear Alan, thank you for sharing one of the loveliest vlogs to date. I was so happy to see a boat with my namesake make an appearance "Josephine " 😊. Also much appreciated is the stunning greenery of the English summer now looking resplendent. Mart did call out, " Look out Alan, " as the canal narrowed but to no avail ! We will give you a top tip for in future.......Get yourself a nice pair of ladies high heel shoes so you may see ahead more easily 👠👠👠👠😜😂. Have a happy day thank you and kindest regards Joy & Mart x

    Dear Joy and Mart. Thank you for your lovely message. I was miles away in thought at the time of the incident. I would prefer to find a nice lady to look out for me rather than a high heel pair of shoes! I actually have on the boat, a half step often used by front doors and it is always on the deck in case I need to use it. This was the first boat I’ve seen called Josephine and it struck a chord with me, as some years back, I had a girlfriend of that name. Hope all well. Take care. Alan x

    Thanks for the video Alan. They are really getting on with that road bridge. Saw that on Phil's vlog not long ago. Lots of lovely helpers on this one. I'm off to walk the Ulverston canal this week as my boat is out of the water being anti fouled at the moment. Take care Alan.

    Narrowboat Lane Thanks for the advice, I didn’t know that. I did some quick research and found that name has been used on several Tunnel boats over the years, so didn’t make any comment. I will research further.

    I really enjoy your videos and your narrative. A couple of questions I hope you will answer. Would you recommend a publication that can be purchased that shows each canal with landmarks and especially bridge numbers? I have often wondered why a small standing only platform approx. 18 to 24 inches high couldn't be manufactured and installed by the tiller and that would allow you to see over the bow or if not to expensive a hard wired camera placed in the bow with a screen on the stern so you could see 20 t0 30 yards ahead of you. I also know that money doesn't grow on trees. Smooth Boating. South Carolina.

    Russ Jones The Nicholson’s guides to the Waterways are very good, which shows some local knowledge with shops and Public Houses.

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

    Many thanks Russ. I have noticed my deck is about 1 foot or 30cms lower than some trad/semi trad boats and I do have a half step to raise me up a bit when necessary. I wasn’t expecting a restriction, so just didn’t see it. My mind must have been elsewhere. I think a bow cam would take some of the fun element away. It may be useful on the odd occasion but I don’t think one is necessary. Regarding maps, I use 3 different types. Nicholson Waterways Guide; Pearson’s Canal Companion and Heron Maps. I prefer Nicholson. The maps are based on OS maps and all have North uppermost. Available on eBay. 7 main guides. I would recommend Guide 3 Birmingham and the Heart of England if you wanted to get one. Cheers

    Greetings Alan What’s the point of the 2 lock gates at 2:30? Was there a change in the water level?

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

    @MyNarrowboatVenture

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Greg. It is a stop lock and would have separated two different companies water. Tolls would have been paid to pass through either way and there is a drop of about 9" to 1 foot (up to 30cm) in water level.

    When you meet another boat are you not to slow down to "tick over" when passing? Some boats seem to be not slowing down.

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

    @MyNarrowboatVenture

    2 жыл бұрын

    You should slow down when passing moored boats, but it's not so necessary when crossing other boats. The wake of the boat can slow you down, so you can need a bit more ooomph!

    Thanks Alan, another top video. A question though: At say 15.42 as you're approaching the tunnel there's a flashing red neon light on your top deck near the bow. I assume it's something to do with Wifi, or perhaps TV reception ?

    It seems that some people are going quite fast. Is it that hire boats often go faster that the boats owned by fulltime cruisers

  • @MyNarrowboatVenture

    @MyNarrowboatVenture

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would tend to agree, but one can't really generalise. Hire boaters are often pushed for time, as it's difficult to know how far you can get in the time you have, and if some go too far, they need to get back by travelling faster or more hours in a day. Cheers
