This one will be nostalgic for me.. The band I was in in 1970 used these exact amps with their matching 15 Ohm 4X12 cabs . We went up to the new factory at Digbeth, Birmingham (UK), to pick them up and spoke to Lyndon Laney in person. I can't tell you much about them as back then, none of us knew anything about setting up guitars or the workings of amps, but we did know they sounded great and were reliable. A lot of people had the opinion they were better than Marshalls. I include myself in that.

Lithium grease on the pot tracks, what genius thought of that one? Poor old Laney. Repairing pots is tedious but oddly satisfying. I'm sure this old amp will soon be rebuilt to your exacting standards and sound great.

Funny, I used to ground my Les Paul Deluxe with P90s directly to my ankle to keep the noise level low. Guess I'm lucky to be alive.

I've worked on a few of these, the TG codes are the model numbers. Never bothered dating them myself though!

Fused ground wire that was a good one. Interesting diodes there.

The knobs look like those found on Bogen or Challenger PA amps (I have lots of them, although most fit onto a crescent or half-moon shaft, not splined or setscrew type, darn it). The amp itself looks kinda like a Traynor or early Hiwatt. Very cool!

Uh, where is the power cord ground wire connected to? It seems to be going to the HV fuse ! :O

Wow!! As a huge Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath fan I'm really interested to see how this turns out! I've longed hope one of these would turn up on your bench and we would get to see you work on it! Extra cool that it is an early version with a tubes-down arrangement. A shop in Ireland has one of these listed on Reverb, but you don't see them pop up very often. Occasionally one will appear that was made as a vertical 2x12 combo.

I don't understand why a tubes down layout would be preferable. Wouldn't all that rising heat, from the tubes onto the chassis/electronics, be best to be avoided?

Yeah the first thing I thought of was Iommi, LA 100 BL on the first two albums I think. But I just read up he used one of these after the Paranoid album until the 80s. Hot damn. Now I def gotta watch the rest of the videos on this amp ! :-)

I know that the following may seem sacrilegious to some, but frankly, this thing, with both a fully "defeatable", and high quality, master volume, a high quality, defeatble, fx loop... Maybe biasing a bit hotter, an adjustable nfb..? This could very well be the amp of my dreams...!

At 2:05, is that a scratch on the back panel above and to the left of a fuseholder, or a silkscreened graphic? Looks like a Seuss drawing of a dog a-bounding or a seal a-diving!

Power cable is non-original. UK colour codes for power cables changed from red, black and green for line, neutral and earth, to brown, blue and yellow/green in 1977 onwards. Good luck with that one. I think you have your work cut out - with earth connections to fuses, who knows what other horrors lurk!

Awesome. I have a 69 supergroup which I restored myself cos I couldn't find anyone I trusted to work on it. I've never seen anyone else work on one and only last week I was thinking I'd love to send it to Psionic for the once over! As I'm in the UK that would be an expensive and risky postage so This video is the next best thing,😁👍 My amp looks identical to this but with one difference..,the chassis is the other way up so the tubes are upright instead of hanging so I'm wondering if mine is a series 2?

I have the same amp as yours and if i remember right, they are 60 watts vs the older ones are rated 50 watts.

@@jensk4140 Yes mine is marked as 60 watts. It has a bulgin power socket though which I thought was an earlier feature? I have a Klipp100 as well and that has the hardwired power cable going through a grommet and as that's from 1974 I guessed it was a later feature. Maybe they were just random as to which they used!
