68RFE Transmission Full Rebuild Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a basic teardown of a 68RFE Transmission.
If you need parts you can call my friends at Bay Area Transmission Supply 281-332-4419.
By the way, they don't have my personal number so don't call them to reach me.
You can send me a text to a cell phone I rarely use, I never answer it but I do return text messages. 281-258-1198. Don't be surprised if I don't text you back, like I said, I rarely use it.

Hiram...As a former Vo-tech Automotive instructor for my local school district, I am really surprised you don't have over a million subscribers. I think you need guys like myself to start promoting your videos on FB, Instagram, etc. You deserve the subs, views and thumbs up...you are the best transmission instructor I've seen on KZread and one of the most informative How-To video creators on KZread period.

Hiram - it is great to see you back posting new repair videos. I was so worried that your shop may have been destroyed by the flooding last year in your area. If you or your shop were affected, then I hope you have recovered and business is getting back to normal.

Good to see you back again. I have been a mechanic for years, but always avoided transmissions. Until I got a job at a trans shop wanting to just do a little of their side mechanic work on a semi retired basis. Their 'builder' was awful, 50% or worse come back rate. Figured I couldn't do any worse than that. Now less than 2 years later I am the builder and he's gone. My come back rate is well under 5%, and of those its more likely to be an installer error than my failure. Still a fairly stressful situation. Your videos have helped me tremendously, especially in the first year, but still serve as educational tool/reference and will likely continue to. Thank You.

Little late to the party, but kind of in a similar boat. I’ve built many a manual transmission as a hobbyist, and always avoided automatics. People regularly asked if I also rebuilt them. Told them I didn’t because there was always something so mystifying about them. Watched a handful of videos such as this and they don’t look any more intimidating than a stick shift. Contemplating dipping my toe into the automatic waters now.

Sonnax makes several parts for the 68RFE to help them live at higher than stock horsepower levels such as the overdrive clutch housing kit you mentioned. Thought I would mention that in case someone who is new to the 68RFE is watching and planning on doing their own rebuild as I am. I've got a 2008 Dodge 2500 with the 68RFE so I bought a core 68RFE that I'm planning to rebuild and then replace the current transmission before I add anything to increase the power output of the engine. I'm not aiming at anything insane for power however I do plan on adding compounds which should increase low end torque as well so planning ahead with the transmission.

Snap-on replaced my pair for the one inside the input drum but I don't like the new style handles. My hands are too small to get a grip on them. I want a new pair like the old style. Always great videos. thanks. I am going to be putting in a reman'ed Mopar pump in my 545RFE when I change the torque converter. I am getting the Sonnax 44912-01 TCC Accumulator spring to replace the one that comes in the reman'ed pump (Sonnax is supposedly made of "upgraded material increases spring strength" and rated for more duty cycles). My question comes in since I am also installing the TransGo 45RFE-HD2 Reprogramming Shift Kit and it comes with a spring set to go in the same TCC Accumulator. Should I just install the Sonnax 44912-01 instead of the TransGo springs there? Also, the TransGo kit comes with their own TCC Limit Valve parts (ball, spring, plunger). Seeing as this is a reman'ed pump, should i install those or leave them out? (thought i heard those were for the older pumps, but i am not sure). Thanks for any help.

Picked up a truck with a 68 RFE that will not shift into reverse or park. The front drive shaft and transfer case went. Smacked the rear output sensor into the trans. Took off the extension housing and found plastic in the back. Cleaned it out but still will not shift into reverse or park. Any ideas? No trans experience. Thanks.

Question. Replaced my stock torque with a Goerend triple disc torque. Also did filters and deep sump pan. Ever since then I have a delayed downshift only 5-4 when coming to a stop. If in TOW/HAUL mode I have no problems. Otherwise shifts fine. Could it be a piece of debree in the valve body? Or just worn out? 350,000 kms.

what would you recommend to beef up the 68rfe, behind a 6.7 cummings, on a truck thats been tuned and deleted? the main reason for the tune and delete wasnt to add HP but ive found myself really enjoying it occasionally and would like the option without feeling like im smoking my tranny. any and all information would be helpful, no matter of how invasive it might be. ive already had a code on the tranny that my local mechanic cant figure out and since the tune, ive been concerned.

The overdrive frictions burning are mostly from people towing without using tow haul. Those frictions and steels just can’t take that weight in those overdriven ratios unlike the 4 speeds. Every 68 I build I put a pump, converter, and overrunning clutch in as well. I really recommend using mopar kits, a lot of remanufactured transmissions I put in for 3rd party warranty companies come back. That snap ring in the input drum is a real SOB hahaa. Did you replace the cooler too?
