@doodr Why would a thief waste their time on cutting through it? Anyone's motorcycle secured with this isn't likely to be locked up in an out of sight place where someone that has the right saw can plan out a theft. I could see a mid-range bicycle where the owner shells out for a nicer lock, but again...it's not likely to be worth the thief's time if they have the funds to afford the right cutting equipment in the first place and have the skill/experience to not get caught while trying it. Sure, it can happen. But nearly anything can be broken/stolen. It's just a matter of how hard you make it and how unappealing you make it to a thief. I just can't see someone having the skillset to deal with this actually risking it or wasting their time. They'd be better off looting a couple cars in the area.

I have the short version of this one, the 1590, that I took with me to DC for my first Century ride with a friend. While I was there I went to the Smithsonian and locked up my $20k S-Works roadbike outside on The Mall and left it for hours. Bike and lock were both still there and unmolested when I got back. That was over 6 years ago, still have both bike and lock and I feel like both are going to be the last purchases of either I make ever. Nice to know when you have something you can rely on forever like that.

My friend had a nice expensive CX bike he also used for commutes. He kept a beefy chain like that tied to a lamppost near work, and someone apparently "worked" on the chain while the bike was not there. So one day he did chain the bike to the post, 15 minutes later it was gone. Chain underneath the nylon sleeve was cut almost all the way through long before - it was apparent because 90% of the cut was slightly weathered.

@@huckthatdish I used to have a motorcycle that I stored outdoors. When home, it was chained to a pole. When away, I relied on an alarm system. It works well enough. When you're out and about you aren't usually in one location for too long, and they are usually more public areas. A screaming alarm works wonders as a deterrent in a populated area. The alarm also had a proximity sensor, so when parked at home you couldn't even touch the chain without the alarm going off. Best to stack defenses and not just rely on one thing.

Unless there's really something unique or valuable about your bike, they'll most likely just move on to easier targets which are a dime a dozen.

You aint gonna get that lock off with anything but an angle grinder and that will take multiple cuts. Chains are tougher to cut than U locks because they move around in your hands and such. If you don't mind making a lot of noise and such, probably 5-10 mins max with an angle grinder and proper cutting edge. For most, not worth the hassle, which is all any locks supply in terms of security.

Any lock that gives YOU such difficulty is a good one! Bet when you uploaded it the Kryptonite guys were going "Gary! Come watch this!" And - layman's suggestion - perhaps they could make it so one or two discs has tension so if its turned without constant pressure it'll push back? The disturbing pattern I still find is that all you need to do to get there is stick something in to rotate them then start turning tumblers. Find a way to disrupt that so you have to push everything or most at the same time you'll have a pick resistant lock that'll either require a 'mission impossible' style micro shape key tool or a copy of the physical key. Combine that with electronics that locks out the lock if there's no chip with a changeable code in the key - and can't be opened easily from the outside we'll have locks that as designed can only be broken into by huge physical force.

Where? I'm not seeing a good target point. This one actually looks like the most realistic destructive attack would be an angle grinder. Maybe if the plastic cover is off we'd see a vulnerable spot, but there's a decent chance this one would break the Ramset instead. Depending on what's under the plastic, maybe a slide hammer on the core would work? Impossible to say without destroying the plastic or trying it.

This would also be a good idea for ebikes. With the motor the weight is pretty irrelevant. I use this ones little brother the 1415 and its also a beast. Love it. Some people say that kryptonites detainer cores sieze up. Ive had mine for over 2 years and it functions like new everytime. The krypto before that i had for almost 10 years and only had one problem that was solved with some three in one oil and cycling the lock a few times. Just have to make sure the key is all the way in before turning or it WILL jam up.

That massive chain looks like the TOW CHAIN I bought at HFTools. I wonder if bike thieves would be less likely to steal your bike if you had locks from several manufacturers locking the chain or several locks locking several chains to one bike even though they can all be picked with the right TOOLS and TIME. Three chains with three lesser locks hooked to one bike might be a deterrent. I am hoping.

Well, it's hard to say. While the lock is very secure, the chain is also secure, and it'd require a considerable amount of effort to break it. So, it's a lose-lose for a thief really. If you use this, your bike is not likely gonna be stolen...at least not in one piece, anyways. If I were a bike thief, I'd probably just disassemble the whole darn bike and sell it for parts.

Never seen the lock out of its cover but im gonna wager that the shackle guard is not integrated into the lock but is seperate and held on by the plastic shell. I bet the core is pinned or peened in but still pretty resistant to pulling. This is good for people securing mobile assesets in high risk areas.

Would like to see you do a fast evaluation on my flexible 'Litelok' wearable model, very light, well padded... But surely below this. It is rated 'Gold' for motorcyles. Cheers 🍻 Remember personal security, because that lock will attract attention... Thieves usually carry weapons, work in pairs and will grab an open cell phone out of your hand. These excellent locks simply raise the stakes 😑

That's the big determining factor. Remember, locks are only deterants. If someone wants your stuff badly enough, they'll get it.

Nobody will say anything because they are 2-3 and are thugs. Happens a lot in London from what i saw. And i can say from experience that in big French cities, if you call the cops, they will take at least 30 or 40mn regardless of the urgency of the situation. Don't ever let valuable things outside.
