65 Years After Dalai Lama’s Arrival In India, What Has Changed? |

For our regular viewers, Claude Arpi, author and eminent Tibetologist needs no introduction. As we mark the 65th anniversary of Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, or, as most of the world knows him, the 14 Dalai Lama’s entry into India on 31 March 1959, Arpi takes us back in time to the incidents that led to his escape from his palace in Lhasa, Tibet and the major events that have taken place since then.
Among the many interesting points that Arpi makes is that although the Chinese today insist that the state of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly Tawang, has been a part of “southern Tibet” from ancient times, China made no such claim in 1959, not did the PLA attempt to cross over in pursuit.
Then in January 1966, when then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri went to Tashkent, Uzbekistan in what was then the Soviet Union, he had called the Dalai Lama’s emissary saying he would recognise the central Tibetan Administration or the Tibetan government in exile, based out of Dharamshala, on his return. But Shastri died under mysterious circumstances a day after signing the peace treaty, and since then, there has no attempt by New Delhi to formally recognise the CTA in deference to the “One China Policy.”
And finally, what happens to the Tibetan movement once the Dalai Lama, now 89, is no more? Will there be a reincarnation? And why is Arpi hopeful of better times? To understand all this, watch the full interview.

Indians have greatly missed the tibetan troop card against china. Indians should not have recognised tibet as integral part of china. Nehru did not condemn communist china take over of tibet in believing the chinese wont disturb indian claim lines at tibetan border and eventually would become great neighbours. But his strategy failed when the greedy chinese did not stop at tibet but keep grabbing indian land along borders and eventually built a highway connecting tibet with xinjiang . The indians only realised there is a chinese built highway in occupied indian land after it was completed in 1958😂

most Indian thinks they fought the 1962 war for Tibetan because they gave refuge to his holiness and Tibetans. Thinks chinese were mad for that reason and attacked them. it’s india own created problem for believing China. That slogan “hindi chini bhai bhai” was a big flop and embarrassment.

Always good to hear Claud Arpi on China, Tibet & Dalai Lama escape from Tibet. Respect him for his vast knowledge of Tibet & China. But questions remain unanswered probably because of security/strategic reasons: (1) Did the Dalai Lama request Nehru govt for arms 2 fight invading PLA/Chinese army & did Nehru refuse this request ? (2) Who was the face-masked leader of the Khampa soldiers called Gen. Death or Shiva whose rebellion in Tibet & guerilla strategies helped Dalai Lama escape Norbulinka palace referred 2 by US journalist Thomas Lowell ? Dalai Lama & our intel agencies have a lot of secrets that they do not wish the public to know.

Dalai lama toured the world n enjoyed the felicitations as a deposed leader ...more like maharajas in colonial times. Has he motivated tibetians to recover his land ? India gives him a place which even Indian refugees the pundits don't have . He never calls out the Chinese . All world give him lip service only.

It does not appear that the Dalai Lama did not want to recover Tibet. There is indirect evidence that he requested the Nehru govt. for arms after China invaded Tibet. To know more details you have to read "Conundrum" ...

He goes in economy class despite his age. I and all my Tibetans brothers and sisters live, eat and get educated by donations and award money he receives. His home is temple in Dharamsala where we can visit every day. He wears no luxury clothes or jewellery. For your information, the land is not given but leased to Tibetans by Indian government. It is all jungle and tombs when leased. Our fathers and mother laboured hard to pull out every root and make roads. It is highly developed and became tourist place generating lots of money as tourist place. But don’t worry we will give it back better and won’t steal your jobs by claiming Indian citizenship. Tibetans have been living for generations but most people refuse Indian citizenship. We will live as guest and go back. Everything we have including the lands and our documents are issued in his name. He was just six year old when we the Tibetan people appointed him as our leader. He is really old now but still going around for our benefit. Say whatever you want, there will be no one like him for centuries to come.

Tibetans and Dalai Lama have to face not only China but Official Indian governments position that Tibet is part of China. Both India and China is against Tibetans seeking independence yet common indian people criticise Dalai Lama for his stance. First change your official position before criticising and advising a stateless, refugee and financial dependent peoples what to do. It is out of desperate times we take this desperate decision.

India has already changed its position that the occupation of Tibet by communist China is a THREAT TO INDIA’S NATIONAL SECURITY! This is clear from Chinese invasion of India in 1962 and Galwan valley murder of 22 Indian Jawans! External Minister Dr S Jaishanker is on record to have said just recently that Nehru’s Tibet policy “PUT CHINA’S INTERESTS AHEAD OF INDIA”! Henceforth, India will follow India’s first Home Minister Sardar Villabhai Patel’s policy on China which is support for Tibet’s strategic buffer state status before the brutal and illegal occupation of Tibet by communist China! 99% of Indians SUPPORTS TIBET’S HISTORICAL STATUS OF AN INDEPENDENT NATION! LONG LIVE HH THE DALAI LAMA!

India has shown to the world what generosity is by letting settle many thousands of Tibetan refugees among them the 14th. Dalai Lama. Now after more than 65 years in Exile, the 14th. Dalai Lama has become one of most ardent supporters of “ incredible India” and he has spread ancient India’s wisdome based knowledge worldwide.
