Very interesting. What I took from this is: the degree itself is not critical, but it can be a good way to gain connexions and learn specific skills.

I'm a level artist with 6 years of experience professional experience. I studied computer science because I heard that theres gonna be 3D modelling subject and I already had a few years of experience because I was modding a lot of games like Stalker, CS:S, Mount and Blade etc. Unfortunatelly I hit the wall, finished the subject during first lecture and even the Collage asked me to conduct lessons about 3D modelling (lol.). I didn't finished collage. I felt cheated to be honest. I learn a little bit of machine learning but it's not the case. What was most important during my collage times was people that I met. There were a lot of people who knew different branches of IT industry, I found my first 3D job thanks to drinking vodka with my collage friend. Theres a difference between studying and learning. Collage was good to find connections between different people but it didn't give me a s*** when I was looking for a job. All that matters is your portfolio, knowledge of the engines and English language. You cant learn rest like workflow, pipelines etc in a job after finding it. Work on your folio, you have to sell yourself and convince employer that you're the one who has to be hired to improve company performance.

This helps immensely and I wish I came across this before I went back to uni. Good news is I'm just starting so I can quickly pivot to a CS degree or I can try my hand at my states Video game degree program (4th best for video game development program)

My neighbor got a game dev degree on the art side. She told a story about one of her "professors," didn't have any college degree, but he was teaching classes at a college.

If someone doesn't have a gamedev degree, will big game companies accept them like EA and UBISOFT

Depends on if they are programmers or artists. If you're an artist, having a portfolio is the main requirement, whereas for programmers, a CS or ideally game programming degree is much more important. -M

Since the 90s, a lot of colleges + universities have job placement services for their graduates to get jobs. One of my friends got his fine art degree from 15 years ago, and the college will still call him, asking if he's interested in jobs that come across their table. He's never worked in the industry he got a degree for. Art didn't pay the bills like managing an Office Max.

Teach yourself programming and/or art from KZread, etc, and get a marketing/management degree

Get a proper classic degree or work education. There is always the risk the game business does not work out, and you need to switch back to the normal job market. There are plenty of resources to learn programming or art for games.

If you want to study something, study programming, then you can use that knowledge for making games or any other application. A game development degree is kinda pointless. Just go make games. That's your qualification. Not a piece of paper.
