{631} Is It Possible To Modify SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) To Increase Output Current

Ғылым және технология

Is It Possible To Modify Power Supply From 12v10A to 12v15A. it is a common question from every viewer that how to increase output current of power supply. i discussed that can we increase the output power / voltage / current of any switch mode power supply. for example for a 12 watt smps circuit design, we need to understand that in any power supply every component is calculated to operate at that rated values to deliver 120 watt (12 volt 10 ampere). if we try to modify it for getting 180 watt (12V 15 Ampere) in that case we will force all the components to work beyond its limits, which will cause quick damage of the SMPS. if we want to modify then we need to re-calculate
EMI Filter
Fuse
Surge Protection CIrcuit
DC Rail components
MOSFET
Current Limit / Sense Resistor
RCD Snubber
SMPS Transformer
Output Rectifier
Output Capacitor
Output Filter
the last thing, that the PCB tracks are already calculated and predesigned for 10 Ampere operation, which cannot deliver 15 Ampere for long term operation, adding a solder layer can improve the current capability but it will cause to increase noise.

    It's easy just buy one more 12V 10A SMPS and put in parallel. I have done this a few times and you have a great video on this too.

    Though I have several questions on this setup. First, how do we ensure the load is drawing approx same power from each source? Might it cause the power drawn to be lopsided? And therefore, cause one power supply to damage or possibly even both because it is supplying power over its rated specification

    honest suggestions, v good, it is better to buy new one for 15 amps. actually in our country people use 12v dc baleno motor for air cooler with computer power supply or some kind of 10a china ps, 15 or 20a china ps is costly, so they remain curious abt amps, bcos baleno +water pump works good on 15 amps ps, and 15 amps computer ps is low cost but when it fails then mechanics refuse to repair it, they said it is irreparable, its main ic is damaged.

    These things are so "cheap" anyway. It pays to get two in parallel or the correct one. Depending on how much reliability you need, or your application, it wouldn't be too foolish to change the capacitors with those from a reliable source, even if the supply is new. It seems the other parts in cheap SMPS's don't fail nearly as much. Thanks for covering this. Best regards!

    Hi, if the power supply is designed to run on both 120V and 230V, at 120V the primary works with double the current to get the same output watts, is that correct? So, working only at 230V, if we increase the output voltage (for example we duplicate it), would the primary and the transformer be able to withstand double the output power? I know that the secondary should be modified to withstand the new tension.. Thank you and best regards

  • @FreeCircuitLab
    @FreeCircuitLab Жыл бұрын

    Did you ever work on making a dual rail supply by separating the secondary into two coils and making them in series? (We must use balanced load otherwise in load regulated at positive section,the negative section will increase its voltage... Anyway let me know if it is possible...

  • @HaseebElectronics

    @HaseebElectronics

    Жыл бұрын

    Good evening yes dear it is very simple. we need to analyze the load properly, then design the smps transformer using proper apparent power method, in this technique, the secondary will stable, otherwise the outputs will imbalance and the transformer will heat up, if we calculate the load properly then no need to put balanced load on both rails. each winding will run its own load safely

    Jazakallah bhai for the video bhai. My case is contrary to this one, I used your method of adjusting smps voltage output to decrease 32v 3A adapter to 14v, but it only works once with the load, if I remove the load and reconnect it, it won't power the load until I unplug from main 220v and reconnect. Pls can you explain what the problem is?
