62. The different types of toilet you get on canal boats; cassette, pump out, and composting

#narrowboat #narrowboats #canal #canals #liveaboard #cruisingthecut
** This video is not for those of a nervous disposition! **
A much requested video, this lengthy ramble discusses the three main types of narrowboat toilet, namely the cassette (eg Thetford or Porta Potti type), the pump-out, and the new kid on the block, the composting loo. There is much discussion of poo and wee and even a brief shot of it going through a pipe. You have been warned!
Please do your own research before home composting any human waste, there seem to be many different opinions on whether this is a good idea or not for health reasons.

Loved your description of the gentle flow of water in the canals. The water moves just enough that your poo bobs against your neighbors boat and you get the stuff from the boat a little further up! Comedy!

Regarding the cassette tank with wheels and extendable handle which looks rather like expensive luggage as you wheeled it along the canal path. If you ever got mugged (God forbid) as you were wheeling it along for disposal, they would be in for rather more than they bargained for.

I know that indescribable smell you mentioned. It permeated a plastic holding tank on a sea going boat (yes which one empties outside the regulatory limits from shore) but the smell stayed with the tank and the whole boat stank, constantly. We had to get rid of that tank. It was a small tank but it was not a nice job, then to dispose of it. THE SMELL. A fresh poo and a distinctive fart would be quite acceptable but that smell goes beyond rotten eggs. Great video. My thanks to the writer, producer, director, cinematographer, commentator and oh and to the presenter. What no swans in this one? Always a treat and look forward to the next.

On my 1967 Columbia 31 sailboat in Florida, I removed the original pump-overboard head, which was no longer legal. My next step was to install a Thetford Porta-Potty, which had a 6.2 gallon tank and which I hated. That device was never used in the manner for which it was designed; we used "Wag-Bags," which were intended for campers and small boats. The bags had a sanitizing powder which solidified everything and could then be placed in normal trash disposal facilities. I was a charter boat skipper and had to clean up after disasters with leaky hoses and y-valves, over-flowing heads and failing macerator pumps. When you go down into the cabins of many boats, the first thing that hits you in the face is the smell of sewage, most likely due to leaky hoses or insufficient venting. Consequently, I never wanted my boat to have a holding tank, or a Porta-Potty, or to use a pump-out station ever again in my life. So then I installed a C-Head composting toilet, which has two moving parts and cost $600. It uses a standard 5-gallon bucket into which you put a few cups of sawdust, peat moss or sphagnum moss. Liquids are collected in a standard 1-gallon milk container. After a few weeks of composting, the contents of the bucket could be either stored in additional buckets with specially-designed lids (I had two aboard the boat for longer cruises), or even dumped on a garden. Urine collected in the milk jug could be dumped into an onshore toilet or simply emptied overboard in the Gulf of Mexico and rinsed out.The C-head could handle the average output of two adults for about 10 days with NO SMELL AT ALL. The contents looked and smelled just like ordinary dirt. My wife was skeptical about the C-Head, so we used it in our house, exclusively ,for two weeks with no problems. It cost about the same as a Porta-Potty, but saved me at least $1600 I would have spent on a marine toilet, holding tank, macerator pump, hoses, y-valves, etc.. Plus, I wouldn't be sailing around with 15 gallons of sewage. The simplicity and lack of smell convinced her. Installing the C-Head was the best modification I did (othe than installing a Beta 20 to replace the old Atomic 4 gasoline engine) during the 32 years I owned that boat. A narrowboat would be the perfect application for the C-Head, which also cost less than the Airhead, Nature's Head and similar toilets, and is easier to use.

Reading some of the comments about our composting loo. It would appear that some think we went about it to be eco friendly and failed because we use plastic bags. We did not. We did it for other reasons. Our pump out tank was a dump through, tank was in bathroom by the way not under the bed, which the seals had gone and needed replacing which meant we'd end up getting a smell in the boat after a week or so as the chemical additive broke down. So we took the opportunity to remove the tank and remodel a larger bathroom where the tank protruded through the floor. During this process we used a cassette. Nothing wrong with it either. Would quite happily use one again. Getting the composting loo was a leap of faith. Sure we researched it and listened to others who had them but still wasn't entirely convinced that it would work and was quite prepared to revert back to the cassette and scrap the composting loo. We were, like most people very skeptical about the claims of no smell. However, the claims are correct you don't get any smell in the boat. You also don't get a smelly bathroom when someone goes to the loo as the fan takes the smell straight away, at source as it were. Even when emptying the solids there is barely a waft. When we did the video it was actually a used bucket that we filmed being emptied, we'd saved it up just for him :). A comment from CruisingTheCut on what he thought of the smell when we did it would be most welcome. What convinced us and our main reason for going this way was the time between emptying (about 8 weeks for solids and six weeks for urine). We have the spare buckets too so if we're iced in and the bucket is full, sods law, we can always seal the used one and store it outside. For me the biggest downside for the cassette was the frequency of having to empty it and/or have a few spare cassettes laying around. Splashback at the Elsan was also annoying. Having to pay for chemicals and water usage. The pump out smells were easily solved by replacing the seals. However, we had to pump out every two weeks which meant we had to find and pay for it. Also paying for chemicals and water usage.

Thanks to this video I've done a lot more research into the composting toilet and it seems the way to go not only for boat life (should we make that move) but also for camping. One interesting thing I learned along the way is that hemcore (which I use a couple of handfuls in a bucket to clean up after our German Shepherd and it keeps the flies disinterested and the smell negligible) is a much better product to use than shavings. It rots down far more quickly, it's more environmentally sound and it smells rather nice! Thanks both for putting this together. I feel I could hold my own in a narrowboat toilet trivia pub quiz after watching all this!

When I first starting on the cut in the 60s all the loos discharged into the water. The few remaining workings boats often used to sling a bucket of ‘waste’ over the side. Made you think twice about falling in. 😂

Finally, a 'Bog Standard' Vlog... We have much the same system here on the East coast of the US along the 'Intracoastal Waterway'. The huge amount of traffic and the fact that you're not really in the open ocean means you can't dump your dumps. Although most boats here have 'black water tanks' that are fixed to the hull and can be pumped out at a nasty smelling 'suction station', there are even volunteer 'Poo Sucker Boats' that will come to you and empty your 'Honey Bucket' storage for you. We do have quite an extensive canal system here, but it's considerably wider, deeper and less used. Mostly because it was built hundreds of years after yours. The Erie is my favorite, over 580 km of fairly straight canal, the original 83 locks have dwindled to 35 today...

I found narrowboat videos via my interest in tiny homes, so I'm always eager to learn about the nitty gritty of life unconnected to modern conveniences. This was actually a very interesting chapter, and I had a long discussion about this video just yesterday with my brother. I told him this topic separates the romantics from the grownups. I think I'm #TeamCassette after watching this.

What a great overview, David. Thank you for covering this topic. We experienced a cassette toilet for the first time during our 3-week campervan journey from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney in Australlia last year. We did find that for two people, it filled rather quickly, certainly in comparison to our typical North American RV black tank setup, with 45-gallon capacity. We have dear friends (fellow full-timers) who LOVE their composting toilet, and have encouraged us to get one. We've considered it seriously, but haven't gotten around to doing anything about it so far. They surely save a tremendous amount of water compared to our current method, and we might make that switch at some point.

Yes, for two it would be very quick-filling. Do take a look at my friends on "The Narrowboat Experience" channel, Kath & Anna, who recently made some videos all about their composting loo, maybe of interest.

I used to work at a Boat Hire company. Like many of the small independent ones it's now gone. But I can say that the smell of pumping-out is unholy, truly awful. Now imagine doing twelve of them on a turn-around day. I think I must have got desensitised to it. Worst thing was is that the company I worked for was sited below the sewer line so we in turn needed pumping-out. I have used both systems, and I think I still prefer the pump-out system. The pong of pumping out is preferable to lugging a box of ones evacuation, and seeing it all swill down a something akin to a hospital sluice is unpleasant to countenance. Whichever way it goes, living on a boat puts one in closer proximity to ones leavings, than many people would find acceptable.

I am in the USA. My boat, a commercial tug, has an incinolet aboard. All waste is held in a paper cone. Then when you step on a pedal it drops into a pan. Around the pan are heating coils, you push a button and it heats for a few hours. Advantages are: zero discharge, no plumbing, only a vent, uses no water. Disadvantages are that it uses a lot of power, you have to buy the paper cones, it gives off some heat. We must use this because we have to operate in the Hudson River which is a zero discharge area. It is not practical to have a tank large enough for to store the effluent from a 4 man crew for several days. We empty the ash pan about once a week and dispose of it with our garbage.

Although I'm a Yank and I live in Kansas (the middle of the United States) with no canals or narrowboats around I have really enjoyed your blog. I have built a boat, or actually a couple of boats, so I'm familiar with many of the issues you touch upon. I find narrowboats a fascinating concept and really wish they were popular here. In fact, I have never heard of one in the States. We have a dearth of canals but many rivers, some very large with swift current. Most of the small rivers are not navigable for any length and none of them are maintained for that purpose. The popular boat here is a lake craft that can easily be trailered, which usually limits length to no more than 25 or 30 ft and powerful motors that can move them at 25 or 30 miles per hour. Houseboats, some rather large (50 ft or more) are common on the large lakes but narrowboats would not be practical because of the choppy conditions on the lakes. With a shallow freeboard and a low speed they would be dangerous to use in bad weather. They are perfect, of course, for England's canals. You have a very professional and enjoyable blog. I have purchased several books on narrowboats, some back issues of magazines and a couple of maps. Keep up the great work. Wish I could share your way of life.

Great and helpful video David, Two summers ago we came to the UK and hired a narrowboat and did the London Ring. I have been obsessed ever since. I have seen at least two hundred-fifty videos on the subject. My wife and I are now obsessively working at getting a 58 footer. I worked in the TV industry also and really recognize your camera and editing skills. You make the best videos of them all. I started with your videos around number 6 and have watched all of them and look forward to seeing the next one each week. Hire boats can't do the London Ring anymore. It's a good thing. The fumes from the pump out toilet. My guess is that the smell is coming from the exhaust of the vacuum pump rather than from the boat it's self. And I can't say which type I would choose, it would depend on the toilet its self. I am a big boy and I can't help but look at those toilets and wonder if they will break under me.

The composting toilet you show is actually a separating batch toilet and UNLESS the user takes that last step mentioned (actually removing the waste to a composting facility) there is little to none composting involved. Most MOBILE composting toilets sold these days are of this design. Of course the manufacturer urges you to compost your solids yet...I know nobody that actually does that. Instead, the waste goes into into the nearest bin. Tossing poop into the waste bin makes no sense to me at all. REMEMBER that under ideal conditions (rare) composting your poop takes 12 weeks or more. If its too cool or too hot, is not mixed daily or is too wet for some reason...composting may not occur at all.

There are also incinerating toilets which can be powered by electricity, propane, or diesel, which convert waste into a few scoops of odorless ash. A friend of mine uses one in his airplane hangar, and while it's a bit fiddly to use the paper liners at first, it seems like a very good option.

Ok, note to self: If you ever buy any movable home (or make one yourself) - so boats, campers (hell even a private plane, but I doubt I will ever buy one of those, they are expensive after all!) etc. - put in a composting toilet (sounds like the best option with the fewest problems!)

This video certainly provides food for thought. Very helpful to analyze the various options. I wonder when the movement towards incinerators will begin as I imagine improvements are being released regularly. I suppose in the meantime a diet high in fiber and vodka might bring down the costs of running the incinerator. Just kidding.

Some ideas immediately spring to mind. Disposable cassettes, a cassette with separate chambers for #1 and #2. These ideas pretty much amount to the composting toilet, but that could do with a more convenient disposal system where you don’t need to be quite so hands on. Combine this with a pump-out option for just the wee, and now you’re talking. Plus the wee could be diluted prior to pumping out, or otherwise rendered less offensive.

  • @thelifeofjools8384
    @thelifeofjools83844 жыл бұрын

All three options are pretty gross.... the chemicals help in the cassettes... but if you use a lot of toilet paper, you've got problems with blockages. The compost thing is more akin to a cat's litter tray :) And as you say, the downsides to a pump out, don't even bear contemplating.... It's a problem that really needs addressing.... both for land and water travellers. Maybe the Dyson guy can think of something :) All the best....

Having experienced a composting loo for a long time at in-laws (they have been out for decades, and are not as nice as made out to be) I think the best system would be a tank system that has a good seal, and having mobile pump boats who you can call out or just visit (maybe just flag one over like a taxi as you are navigating the water ways) just like truck septic tank ones. Or you can change to be a Moclan like Bortus and pee just once a year.

Composting toilets seem to get a bad rap if they rely on air filters alone and not an outside vent. With a positive pressure outside vent all air in contact to the bin should go up and out. As for the urine part, ammonia forms much better in an anaerobic environment. To avoid spillage that's probably helping cause a higher ammonia smell. Urine stored open air isn't bad at all, unless the water is rapidly evaporating away leaving only the urea.

For the 15 months I spent on a narrowboat, I just used this, - Denny International 【LIGHT WEIGHT】 Large 6L Compact Portable Toilet Potty Loo with Washable Basket and Toilet, less than £20 0n Amazon. It didn't smell at all really. Thought might have to smear Vaseline on the rim to provide a good seal. That wasn't necessary. Just lift out the bucket by its handle and take to Elsan point. Easier to empty than a cassette. I had two 4lt Worcester Sauce bottles for pee, provided free from a takeaway, very strong, with advantage of being food safe.

Yeah, most responsible deep water vessels stopped dumping untreated waste overboard about 30 years ago. I am not saying it is not still done, many small fishing boats (especially Chinese and asian countries) still have not joined the 21st century. But (especially in port or inshore waters) there are regulations now.

Tyler Albrecht Hi, I swopped from pump out to compost (had experience of cassette in my caravan and camper in the past !) as soon as l could !! By separating the wee from the solids, it makes a huge difference, no longer does wee activate with the solids and a little ventilation is all my loo requires ! I have spare wee bottles, which I empty more often than I need to with the solids ! For me there is no better loo !!

Few are composting in a composting toilet. Instead they are batch collecting the solids and throwing it in whatever trash bin they can find. It takes weeks under perfect conditions for composting to take place and months in colder weather. I have used everything since I started living on wheels in 1991 and I am going back to a cassette toilet I can safely dump in many varied locations.

"Slap on yer marigolds" I LOLed!! I have worked in sewage treatment plants and sewage pumping stations and after a bit, it's nothing new under the sun. I have owned a travel trailer (caravan) with both gray water tank and a black water tank. They worked well enough, but I found the black water tank needed priming with plain water, or significant agitation (ie, driving) to keep it fluid enough to drain out properly. Here in Canada, and the USA, drain out stations were available at trailer parks (or at your specific site) and were included with the price of staying there.
