61. How to Make White Terra Sigillata - with EPK and Tin Oxide

I this video I will show a different way of making Terra Sigillata than in my first video. My goal with this one is to make it whiter.
To do so I will not only be using ball clay but also include EPK - a kaolin clay (porcelain) and in the end mix in a bit of tin oxide.

    Hi Mikkel, thanks again for sharing your experiences. Today I want to give you a tip! I once saw a teacher separating the TS using a soldering iron (I don't know if that is the name in english, but it is an equipment that can be plugged to eletricity to heat up). She puts the plastic container over another plastic container, drills holes in the lower limit of the pure water, and takes it out. Then she makes holes in the lower limit of the TS separating it from the rest, without pulling the liquid with her mouth.

    Thanks :-) I know the method but I prefer to make larger portions and be able to reuse my container

    Mikkel -- May I offer a suggestion that may make determining specific gravity even easier? I always use a syringe similar to the one you used here. I have weighed the syringe empty to determine its empty weight (28 grams). Now I just draw up into the syringe 100 grams (by volume) of the liquid to be tested and weigh the syringe again. If it weighs, for instance, 140 grams, I know that the SG is 112 (or 1.12) because I know that 28 grams is the syringe (140 - 28 = 112). To make it easy, I used Excel to chart out all possible readings between 110 and 170 so that I don't even have to do the math each time. I just look at the chart and if the scale says "155" I follow across to the answer -- SG is 127. (Actuall, my syringe is smaller so I draw up 50 grams, but my chart accounts for that by x2.) The chart hangs on my studio wall and looks, in part, like this: Scale Reads SG 90 -28 x 2 124 91 -28 x 2 126 92 -28 x 2 128 93 -28 x 2 130 etc. I hope this makes sense.

    How did this terra sig recipe work out on your pots? Do you apply to a leather hard or bone dry pot? I'm hoping you have a youtube video showing how white it looks.

    It works really well. Better than my first one. I apply it to bone dry greenware. You can see how I apply it here (using my first type of TS): kzread.info/dash/bejne/q351lKiDdqXVmLA.html

    Will the tin oxide interact with the ingredients in naked raku and cause problems removing the coating after it comes out of the reduction can?

  • @deMibPottery

    @deMibPottery

    Жыл бұрын

    No, after it has been fired its sort of burned into the pot. The raku fire is not warm enough to melt it again.

    Hi Mikkel, a bit confused. Was EPK 316g or 1120g? And the water was initially clear but at 8.09s water seemed added with something? Did I miss out anything in this video? Look forward this slip to be applied and fired. Thank you very much.

  • @deMibPottery

    No problem. You are very welcome to ask :-) It is 316g EPK. You can see the recipe here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmF7xrqNfJTWmNo.html What you see I am adding at 8:09 is the ball clay. At that point I already added the EPK. That is why the water looks that way

    @@deMibPottery @Mikkel deMib - Pottery Tips They did turn out great! I must try the white TS too - one last question - I know from your other videos that you apply the terra sig to greenware, right? Do you bisque fire it then in a kiln first or does it go straight to pit fire? One of the bowls had a bisque-y sound to it in the video you shared (at ~3:53). I really like the aesthetics of your works - thanks for sharing your knowledge with us :)

  • @deMibPottery

    @deMibPottery

    Thanks. Yes, I bisque fire after the TS is applied. Keep in mind that the higher temp you fire to the less glossy it gets - but the higher, the less risk of flaking off. I have found that for my combination of kiln and clay 1000 C works the best
