600 Overkill vs. 500 Nitro Express. "And the winner is....."

Спорт

Here's a synopsis of what we've learned from shooting soft point and solid bullets from these two rifles into 24 inches of solidly packed phone books. The results surprised us! Shooting solids at the same velocity the 500 Nitro penetrates further than the Overkill.
Shooting soft points the 600 Overkill out-penetrates the 500 Nitro while holding onto most of it's mass!

    Robert Keller. the 375 H&H have already proven itself in Africa's golden age as a formidable cartridge however, most African states requires a 40 caliber minimum to take large & dangerous game because the 375 have failed to take down many large or dangerous game due to lack of bullet weigh & size & improperly placed shot nevertheless, a 375 H&H with nowadays bullets such as Woodleigh & others will reach any large game's brain successfully so, there you go . My 375 isn't much more in the recoil department than some 30-06's I've shot but I don't believe I'd want to tangle with either of these two calibers, my shoulder agrees! 😉

    Les Kugel. considering the bullets of the past you are correct regards the solids however, as a stopping rifle, the 600 caliber with the Woodleigh RN weld core is your best choice as you can see the damage they inflict on nearly 17 " of dry compressed phone books by large margin tougher then any elephant frontal head skin & bones which are not solid rather then a honeycomb thick sponge like material as I've seen in San Diego wild park display. Try some of the flat point solids made by North Fork and Cutting Edge Bullets. They penetrate much deeper and straighter as well as creating a better wound channel than round nosed solids. Also try the Barnes 570 gr TSX in your .500 Nitro. It works great in my .500 A-Square.

    +Cruel Sewell . thanks for your comment & I have no doubt these bullets you've mentioned performs well indeed however, how deep a bullet needs to penetrate in order to take down a large dangerous game at close range? its all about shot placement & not how deep a bullet penetrates nor its trajectory however, I may give these bullets a try soon enough. regards Avi

  • @cruelsewell6231

    @cruelsewell6231

    That depends on the angle my friend. Quartering follow up shots can require quite a bit! Also, you'll find the penetration to be much straighter, more dependable and the wound channel larger. They stabilize in flesh much better than round nose bullets. I didn't believe it until I tried them. I like the Barnes TSX and the CEB Raptors for most North American game. I will have my hands on my own .600 Overkill next year. I enjoy your videos and best regards.

  • @1tufgun

    @1tufgun

    10 жыл бұрын

    Randy. fact is none of the professional famous ivory hunters ever used a scope on their rifles mainly because the short distance and thick brush renders a scope useless & takes too long to acquire the target. you have to maintain front sight alignment rather quickly in most situations while observing the game though a missed shot could & would result in serious injury or death. extreme recoil could result a scope hitting a shooter in their forehead as well so all around scopes on dangerous game rifles is unacceptable or practical.. since ,,30 min ago , i contacted all my chemist frends /gun ,,spetialist etc // since all i managed to see is ,,1 copper solides are considerate less plyable and should raise pressure in barrel / possible even damagin barrel a bit,,not after 100 /300 shoot s but just for arguin case i bet all i got solid shoot is more ,,let say unpleasant than even hardest jacketed bullet with lead core// result i see is solid silver bullet /should not damage barrel still had some expansion that should be desirable /and since when shootin 500/ 600 nitro ,,or grain bullet s u are bound to find at least 9 of 10 bullet s fired so cashwise it again no problem,,or at least smaller problem than me in my sleep thinkin bout how longer less seal;ing bullet in my 600 nitro express gun or any / similar would micro stretch barrel or wear rifeling/,, in fact id go solid silver shoot with centerhole like few mm from the back of the bullet to approx 2/3 of bullet lenght,,and after eatin all 3 tonn of elephant just smelt the chunk again and the percent or 2 that were burnoff or lost anyhow during kill is like u can charge me // personally//plus u d get nice mushroom top i bet while no as much deformation as on jacketed bullet,,still if my precious gun was shoot on silhuette and gun is no 2/3 thousand dollar rifle but as i saw on IWA 1,5 milion euro double barrel ,plus another set of barrels /1 in 600 / 2nd in 700 nitro express// id only ONLY USE LEAD HEAWY JACKETED BULLETS WHEN ,,:) PLINKING AT SILHUETTES//SO IF U ASK ME //NO SOLIDS IN GUN //IF U INTEND TO KEEP IT LIKE ,,FOREVER ,,DOWN THE FAMILY /OR WANT TO TAKE IT TO GRAVE//PLEASE REPLY ,,I KNOW U CAN TELL SOME NEW STUFF I DID NOT GET HERE //SO I ASK AGAIN/ PLEASE MASTER //HELP USA WITH YOUR PERSONAL OPPINION //YOUR S SLOVENIAN ADMIROR /MITJA

    sectional density is the factor in penetration, a 416 will out penetrate most of those bigger calibers. The bores over 458 are stopping rifles because at close range they hit a charging animal so hard it knocks it down from the energy alone. 416 and 458 caliber guns will kill all big game with proper shot placement and premium bullets. the 416 will kill farther than a 458.

    so how would that explain the 500 nitro express solid penetrating more than the 600 overkill?

    Sectional density, the bullet is longer, the fatter bullet will lose energy faster, the bullet construction is a factor as is velocity. I would not want to shoot a 600 at Right velocities. A 416 Right can be loaded to 2800 fps. the common load can penetrate an Elephants skull and exit at 100m.

    but a 500 nitro express with a 500 grain bullet has a sectional density of .274 and the 600 overkill with a 900 grain bullet has a sectional density of .334. So the 600 overkill wins in sectional density

    Sometimes too much penetration is a bad thing. I'm pretty sure a 500 nitro, with that much penetration, would go through a deer from one rib through the ribs on the other side. That is not an advantage since energy is being wasted as the bullet leaves through the other side. A heavier bullet with less penetration might be better to stop a deer dead. That being said, both bullets are excessive for most game hunts. You waste a lot of meat when you make these massive cavities on the animal, because that mangled dark wound meat is no good for consumption. A .300 Winchester Magnum is plenty enough for killing all games found in north america. These bullets, especially the .600, were designed for elephant hunting. There is no advantage in using them for smaller game. And if the deal is home defense, then the .500 is better because of penetration, since you could drop a bandit shooting through a door or gypsum panel walls.

    No shit! Wow! Since a 30-30 will shoot through a deer broadside your analysis of these big bore rounds is just amazing.

    Cairo hi. if you suggesting the 700 nitro express supersedes the various 600's, you are in error since a 1000 gr bullet at 2000 fps yields 8.800 foot pounds of muzzle energy while the 600 overkill could produce nearly 12000 foot pounds of energy but at 2300 -2400 fps (with a longer barrel) which is in the 50 BMG realm. thanks for the comment in any case. United-States-Morons-Corps no large game will ever notice the difference. a 750 grains bullet going 2400 plus versus 900 grains bullet at the same velocity attainable with the 600 overkill rifle so you do the math guys. I for one find compering cartridges performances based upon velocity for bragging rights unacceptable & pointless. AVI

    Ryan. fact that mr Bell shot many elephants with a 7mm & 160 gr solid successfully always with a brain shot. which is self explanatory ! however, if you miss the shot with large dangerous game it would take off or charge you. African states require min caliber for large or dangerous game is .40. so its all about the proper caliber & bullet type for the game you hunt.. Avi

    Why anyone would want to hunt "large game" is beyond my comprehension. Most "large game", elephant's, rhino's are endangered species. I know that sometimes a bull has to put down because he is older and has become aggressive towards the herd. But it is not hunting. Someone pay's thousands of dollars to be taken to the area where the bull is, have him pointed out to him so he can shoot it. I know the preserve makes money this way but the person that pays it, that thinks he is a large game hunter is an IDIOT.
