60 meters underground! Stone mining process! Oya Stone in Japan

Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, is enjoying a boom with the opening of its next-generation tramway.
The city is also famous for its gyoza (dumplings), and has recently been attracting attention as a production center of Oyaishi (Oya Stone), which is registered as a Japanese Heritage site.
We were given the opportunity to visit an underground Oyaishi mining site, which is still in operation today.
Please take a look at the precious mining process that is taking place deep underground.

You can cut huge blocks of various types of stones like marble just by using ropes coated in abrasives. They can probably cut things about 3-4 times as fast by installing a water cooling system and using faster self-sharpening chainsaw blades with a smaller diameter.

Earthquakes are way less problematic underground. Sure cracks can happen and some weakened bits could fall off, but it couldn't shake as much as the 'thin' overground structures (buildings). The best you can do is watching over cracks and uncertain bits and reinforce them if needed. No way you can or should concrete the whole structure (would be way too expensive and overdoing it), rock is already hard enough given you leave enough matter for the 'pillars', it could only crack as would do non-reinforced concrete (thus why you should watch over cracks).
