£60 for a non-extendable 2m RGB LED strip?!

Ғылым және технология

Elgato are known for releasing excellent gear aimed at live streamers and content creators. Now they’ve gone one step further, or even maybe one step too far? As they are offering their own RGB LED light strips, coming in at a seriously high asking price of £60 for a single, non-diffused, 2m LED strip. Today we’re going to put Elgato’s premium strip against two, Amazon Choice, RGB LED strips that are much cheaper alternatives to see if the Elgato’s really are worth such a high price tag. Spoiler - it's not.

    I don't know why they don't make a built in diffuser. I hate the fact you can see the individual modules on all these strips.

    I have to agree with you there, that rubber coating on the Elgato and even my own Govee strips could easily be diffused by being a cloudy white finish. Cheers - Andy

    Those kind of strips in the video should be installed as ambient light, they should not be installed on the surface where you can see them directly. I couldn't find big Company that sell led lights in diffuser. Aliexpress marketplace sells many LED strips inside neon silicon tube that can diffuse the light very nicely. But the apps control and support won't be as good as like Govee for example.

    @@yohanes2034 I kind of agree, but even as ambient they're annoying. Around the sides of my desk I can see them individually off the wall behind. I'd like to put them behind the mono tray, but again it would be too much point-source

    completely agree, govee is the go-to in this situation, cheaper to replace as well if they break.

    It is. Better buy cheap LED because diode easy gone haywired because usually use or because of heat changing its color.

    Picked up a set of these on sale for 27 Quid just to play with. If they work amazingly, then the cost difference is just about ok. Otherwise Govee is fine for the cheap and disposable end.

    You forgot the DIY solution by buying cables from aliexpress. Which is even cheaper than the other ones. and can be extended as long as you want {till the power supply can no longer power the strip}

    The control via stream deck is still very lacking IMO. If the function is just on/off, it's very easy to assign if this and that and connect to your Govee light strip app to control the lights. Anyway streamers will still buy this thing just because Elgato made it.

    However Amazon choice are often defined by product influencers, so the ratings don’t mean a thing

    Hm... I paid £65 a Year ago for my Second Hand GPU RX 470, £60 for led strip looks like £59 profit margin

    they look tasty fish for sure but...£60 for 2m and a plug required for each is just looney tunes! You're Bob on I'd say...get the Amazon fav's...even though it does sound like it's named after a somewhat derided Tory MP! 😉

    Elgato started as a manufacturer of accessories exclusively for Macs and you are surprised there are still parallels to Apples.

    Corsair own them. I think its less a surprise and quite a good analytical review of exactly what you get and don’t get.

    F Elgato man. I understand they're the 'top' streaming brand etc etc but this is blatant daylight robbery and kids lap it up. I'll never support a company doing this and will avoid their products going forward.

    Unfortunately, my own personal strips are a couple of years old now and I can't find the exact ones on sale anymore but they are/were part of the "Govee Dream Color" range. I believe they're identical to the "Minger Dream Color" RGB LED strips as they too use the Govee Home app. Cheers - Andy

    Thanks for the review! I appreciate the time it takes to make these videos. The El Gato strip is a pretty lame product and a feature limited entry into a flooded market. Almost looks like they licensed the strip design from Philips Hue which is a better product to begin with. Hue is also pricey but you can extend the strips with add ons and the app is good. There are the usual smart phone apps to control but also desktop apps that can control the lights and save scenes. I can change my light scenes or colors on the fly with one click shortcuts on my desktop, or smart phone. Philips Hue requires a WIFI bridge as well but in the end you get a high quality LED strip with lots of smart light possibilities to add throughout your home. Philips has a cheaper product line that uses software called WIZ, does not require the bridge and works with Bluetooth. But some people have complained of the BT not working well. I would not recommend those. The only thing I liked with El Gato's strip is the anti flickering feature. That is smart. I've had issues with Philips Hue and flicker but as the reviewer mentions, adjustments to your frame rate and shutter speed and remedy that. Cheers!
