6 Ways to Accessorize Animals for the Sake of Science

Decking out your pets with miniature hats is a sure recipe for a great photo. But scientists are accessorizing animals with various technological trinkets to help us learn more about the animals themselves and the places they live.

Damnn that's so cool! I came across the whole cyborg cockroach thing when I was looking up the wikipedia page for brain implants or something related for a sci fi story I'm currently working on. From cockroaches I jumped to using humans and controlling their movements to weaponise them and make my plot revolve around that. Unfortunately I get a lotta problems with the science of it and I can't a find relevant information in the net...sooo do you mind answering my science questions related to the story please :')

Did you hear about the magpies that "un-accessorised" each other within hours of being "set free"? The researchers didn't learn anything toward their objective. They did learn, however, that magpies are surprisingly helpful toward each other even when they weren't related, and did it altruistically - they did it simply to help each other out of their harnesses (they'd been fitted with for tracking purposes). Go to Australian Geographic.

There were also birds who screwed up the research by liking the new accessories a bit too much. When they researchers realized the colored leg tags on their subjects were causing the females to prefer males with more brightly colored tags, they had to reevaluate the data they were getting.

I was glad he addressed the sensors impacting animals' daily life, because I am really wondering about the dragonflies. Do they just die from that weight attached to them? He did say that takeoff was impacted in a previous study, so they dropped them out of planes in this study. So, if they can't take off once they land, what happens? Does the weight fall off by itself in a short time or does it weigh down the dragonfly and it can't take off, so it dies?

nowhere in the video (or the abstract of the original paper) does it say that the dragonflies were dropped out of a plane - only that they were dropped mid-air. the full text of the study isn't online, so I can't speak to the methods used, but I imagine the researchers held captured dragonflies aloft (probably by their abdomens, VERY gently), then measured the flight pattern after letting them go. such a study could be easily conducted in a lab or in the field, with a white background and a camera to take video of the animal's movement (which can later be plotted to calculate the curvature in the flight pattern). Using the known masses of the creature and the added weight, and the constant acceleration due to gravity, you can calculate the upper limit on lift that each creature is able to generate.

@@anyascelticcreations ah ok, not an Aussie then I guess. Aussies are more concerned about whole cities being under 50 feet of water & rain still continuing at 2-3 inches per hour, hampering the ability to fly any helicopters to collect the thousands of people who have been trapped on their roofs for hours to days & who are running out of rooftop space to sit as the waters keep rising. Flotilla of volunteer boats were sent out to try to collect people, but many of them capsized when the boat motors got tangled in powerlines (you know, the things you normally look up to see, but that are now under them because of how high the water is throughout the towns & cities) & so most of the civilian boats have had to be recalled & the army flown in to take over as the deaths continue to rise & it is believed that large numbers of elderly are inside their roof cavities instead of sitting on their roofs in the pouring rain & as such can't be seen to be collected & are quickly losing breathing air in there as the waters continue to rise, so yeh, we're really not worried about "ww3" right now, far more concerned about the immediate, real threat to lives so many are facing across 2 states (not to mention the massive bushfires ravaging the other side of the country, that is devoid of water & in the middle of a drought, with everything so dry that houses are being lost on mass to the fires) In reality, humans can't do anything serious in any ww3 when compared to what mother nature is capable of & intending to do to everyone over the coming decade in revenge for our messing with her climate. I do still feel for the Ukrainian people though, they're awesome & showing real courage that we can really relate to & respect here in Australia & we really want to help them too!

@@lilaclizard4504 Nope, not an Aussie. I hadn't even heard about what is going on there. If that was all over my news, I would be feeling terrible about that, too. I have the war all over my news. I feel for the people directly involved there. The people forced to fight on both sides. But if the madman who started this decides to launch nuclear weapons, my country will be the first one hit. And other countries would respond. That's a threat that weighs heavily. If that happens, it would literally be the end of the world. So yeah, it has been heavily on my news. And on my mind.

Everything we have today is the culmination of several mistakes and sacrifices our ancestors had to go through so they and their future generations could reap the benefits from. Not everything was a good invention, but it was still a foundation. Science, technology, medicine, etc, all of these things are but a form of knowledge. Knowledge by itself isn't evil, but your application of it can be. Einstein had good intentions when he wrote the Theory of Relativity, yet people still found a way to skew his work into a weapon of mass destruction. Yet, the same Theory of Relativity could be used to harness nuclear energy - now much cleaner and safer than it used to be (again, built upon the mistakes of the past) - and a viable alternative for an ever-expanding society with increasingly higher demands for energy. Mind control could have it's uses too, for example, in medicine, perhaps as a way to subvert or eliminate mental illnesses. Again, it all depends on what you intend to use with it for. You can't avoid evil people from doing evil things but if we were to halt progress simply because we're afraid of the bad things it could bring, then we would still be using sticks and stones to this day...

@@abstractalien12345 If we're talking about risks then I think it's a good comparison. A nuclear bomb has the potential to be far more disastrous than leaded gasoline. And the timing couldn't be any worse either - especially now the war raging in eastern Europe (Ukraine vs Russia) and the ever-present threat of nuclear bombing... I'm not saying leaded gasoline is good nor that all ideas and inventions since the dawn of mankind were good or useful. I'm just saying that everything has potential and deserves a chance until proven otherwise.

Instead of using cockroaches for the search and rescue why not use rats who can be easily trained. Take the giant African rat which have been trained to sniff out land mines. Rats are brilliant, intelligent and trainable animals.

I don't think a robo-roach human finder is a good idea. In all honesty my first instinct when seeing a roach is to either run or smash it. So probably not good if they need to find me and I just freak out cause of a roach and keep moving locations or smashing the poor bug cause it gets too close. 🪳+ 🤖=🩴❇️ 😅
