Your comment made me think of a time when I had a pretty good size bonfire going, and a neighbor walked by with his dog. The teepee fire is great because it lights fast (put kindling in the middle) and burns clean, with minimal smoke, even if the wood isn’t completely dry. And once you’ve established a fire this way and it burns down to hot coals you can stack more wood on them however you want.

I've also seen this done with cast iron pans to make breads and desserts, but haven't done those myself. we try to have logs on the bottom layer at least so it'll burn awhile, it's not fun trying to restart it or stoke it with a pot on top if it doesn't keep burning well. I learned how to do this at a training in the snow in February, was very surprised at how well it worked.

I don't like the 'log cabin' fire at all. You are basiclly burning all your fuel at once! To high of heat and way to short of a burn time! Just a complete waste when there are literally sooo many other _better_ ways to build a fire!! And someone else's method of 'putting bigger logs underneath,' yes, this is a different type of fire! So you are not building a 'log cabin' anymore, you are building a better, more practical type of fire!!

You'd be better off making a tripod by lashing 3 sturdy sticks together to hang it from. Just gotta make sure that they don't get too close to the fire. 5ft lengths usually work fine. Fire structure does not matter for cooking. Log cabin really is just used because it looks good in a social setting or for it you need it to start warm since it will burn for awhile.

Log cabin is the best fire you start with the smaller stuff and build a small log cabin with dry kindling, and then a bigger cabin not necessarily square, but with hexagon shape, making it a little bigger around each smaller stack. The smaller stuff in the middle will start easier and radiate out to the bigger stuff to make even the wet firewood burn quicker and start easier and you just keep adding to your fire

There is also the "cross fire." Basically you take 2 boards, form a cross, then burn it in the hood. It doesn't burn for long, but it's a great way to gather a sizeable group of people in a short amount of time. Please Note: Many who show up (including the cops) will probably be armed, hence the phrase "crossfire."

If all you got is wet wood, swedish torch comes in handy to get a fire going, keep it going, and drying out wet wood you place around it like a log cabin, so when the torch is almost done, set your now dryer wood on it and continue to burn and dry. Exhausting but fire.

I do a log cabin/ top-down fire. The actual start of the logs is solid layers of logs for the bottom 2/3rds, then smaller logs set in log cabin style with the fire starting in the top third of the stack. Starts off kinda well and then burns down through "solid" layers and burns for a while. Also useful for windy areas you should have a windbreak. Just some 2 inch pointed logs driven into the ground behind the fire really close together with some still green branches outside of that. Helps slow the wind.

I used the lean to fire all the time for survival/ get it burning as fast as possible and using zero to no accelerant. It works great to just find a decent-sized tree that fell and use the end or hack a log off. Then just gather about 3 to 5 different sizes of sticks/twigs. I use tiny little dry dead twigs up off the ground to get it going then go in ascending order from there. It works great to get going in a pinch and get a decent bit of heat from. Also works well in wet conditions

The teepee is much more useful than what is shown. It catches very quickly and can be made to whatever size you want. You can make a small one by using twigs/tinder which can be put in the center of a log cabin structure to quickly and easily light the larger wood around it. What's really fun is to make a 3ft teepee (approximately) and then build a larger log cabin structure around it. You'd just need to make sure that you leave a spot where you can get to the center to light it.

The best type of camp fire is a self feeding camp fire. To this you take four poles that have been sharpen on one end and insert them into the ground at an angle. You then place 5-6 logs on either side the fire pit. Place pile of tender in-between the bottom 2 logs and light it. As burns the logs will roll into the pit essentially feeding the fire without you having to do anything. This type of camp fire was used by our pioneer ancestors from 18th and 19th centuries. If anyone was a survival expert they sure were, because they learned from ultimate masters of survival the Native American People.

don't forgot the long log fire it's we're you take two logs and put them parallel to each other and stuff smaller twigs in the middle of the two logs and you light a fire at each end and the middle or how ever big you have it you can make it a long as your body this fire can last you all night and keep you warm

I do the cabin fire because it's the best I found that works during a windy day it allows for wind to feed oxygen into the fire but not put it out.

Don’t forget about the soul camp fire which you could use soul sand or soul soil to make

If you have cut the logs properly flat on one side, a canadian candle is very suitable for cooking with a pot/ pan without the need of a tripod.

Best fire i used is the self refueling fire. Easy to make and rolls the logs down into the fire without spreading up to the reservoir logs.

Log cabin aal the way! I prefer to do it using three or even for pieces of wood per layer. Doing it this way will make it easier to lighting and burn longer. If you want to be fancy about it you can light it from the top. This does minimise smoke and pollution.

There is also one by digging two holes and connecting them by a smaller hole. One hole you build the fire, and the other hole adds air.

Take one more - for a Canadian you don't actually need a log. I you haven't one you can just collect branches and stuck them together to form a kind of cylinder and tie them up with rope/wire/plastic bag. Put thin branches inside and thick from the outside. If you haven't anything to tie branches / just stick them in the earth vertically. You can use it in the same way as Canadian Log but it will burn much faster.

In our wood heater I do the cabin fire with logs on top, that fall on those coals. Put a little bit of a green piece in there, burns forever.

I'm gonna try one next camping trip! I saw a video years ago, someone did a top down/layering method, but they used cement cement blocks instead and put tiny dry twigs at the bottom. It was like a real oven! My personal fave is the Canadian candle 🤣 Never heard of that! Merry Christmas Nate 🎄

Ive done the “Lean to fire” many times but id have to say my go to style definitely bounces between log cabin and Tipi. I’m an Eagle Scout so i was making fires every week for years and I’ve found to really like log cabin and tipi.
