We are already one month into the new year, how are you guys feeling? Overwhelmed or organised? If you’re stressing out and want life to be a bit more manageable, how about doing a little new year clearout? Here are 6 things you should get rid of (if you ask me), because they're either items you don’t love or you don’t need or because they’re actually making you outright unhappy.
i talk about:
- early spring clearout
- things you don’t love
- things you don’t need
- things that make you unhappy
- organising and decluttering
- the minimalist home
- getting your flat tidy and beautiful
- how aesthetics affect your mood
- the scandinavian / nordic / swedish approach
- simplifying your space
- loving your home
- the duplicates
- the in case of emergency items
- the maybe one day items
- the things that don’t spark joy
- being happy with what you have
- a simpler everyday lifestyle

I'm decluttering 100 clothing items before I move, and this is so helpful. The so-so clothes are definitely the hardest to declutter for me. But calling them so-so clothes is giving me all the motivation to get rid of them ☺

@@bR-gz5oj I love that. At this point I make a capsule wardrobe in the beginning of the week and stick to these pieces. I change it up every week because I get bored of my clothes very easily, but it does prevent me from buying clothes

I thrifted several bags i thought i could re-sell, alter or repair. They stayed in my closet for more than 3 years untouched and made me feel guilty every time i saw them. Decluttered them in January and felt very relieved.

Oh the "soso" clothes and the "what if" items! The hard part for me is that my body size changes from time to time (FINE BY ME) so I have to keep alot of clothes that don't fit me at all times.. Maybe I should store them away, like with seasonal items, so I don't see them all the time I open the wardrobe.

Me too :) I store them in boxes with a label of the clothing size and if I size up or down I simply fetch the right box. It's like having multiple capsule wardrobes!

That's a really smart idea, I think! Sometimes minimalism can actually motivate wastefulness around clothing when it encourages getting rid of anything you're not using RIGHT NOW but when your body fluctuates in size, as is totally normal (mine does too), it's much more environmentally friendly to tuck those items away until you need them

The duplicates issue is definitely prominent in my life, especially for jeans. I have LOTS of jeans due to size fluctuations and only a few of them look right on me at a given time and the rest will be a little ill fitting even though they can technically fit on my body. I don’t really know how to handle this though because if my weight fluctuates again, the bad fitting pair of jeans will be the new good fitting ones.

I have this issue with bras, there's a bunch just forgotten in various closets... Maybe you could organize them in a nice way? Like give them their own box, and stack them smallest in one end and largest in the other. And maybe get rid of a few pairs if you have many in the same size :)

I heard a good tip - designate a place for your non fitting jeans, a box for example, and just keep what fits in there. That way they're organized and not in your way when you're getting dressed every day : )

Keep them, if you know, that you will need them in the future and also organize them. Buying new ones, when you need them, can be frustrating if you don't find a perfect pair.

Keep them as long as you still like the styles! My weight also fluctuates so I just make sure to review those off-size items maybe once a season so I'm not stuck wearing something I don't even like if I decide to pull them out.

It doesn't matter if something is beautiful, if it's linked to a memory too bad to forget, I'm letting it go. Someone else will enjoy those items much more and there's no need to make yourself miserable over a dress, a piece of furniture or anything else.

Hello from USA! I’ve been away from KZread for awhile but recently caught up on “old friends”. I’ve always enjoyed your and David’s videos. So glad you are both well and surviving the global pandemic. My husband and I purchased a home 2,600 miles west of our former east coast home. Knowing we would eventually downsize, I started working towards optimal organization and more minimalistic living. Our new location offers us fantastic weather and stunning scenery from our home of the snow capped Sierra. I just wanted to express how freeing it is to de-clutter and reduce our footprint impact. Cheers!

The great tidying up of 2019, after I binge-watched Marie Kondo and got rid of all our furniture because I wanted to try active sitting at home. Then the pandemic hit and I was doing zoom meetings on my living room floor because the couch didn't spark joy lmao.

This was really helpful! Another tip: only have jewelry and watches on display that you actually will wear. The rest, if it has sentimental value, you can put in a pretty glass jar with a lid and make it a decor piece. I have such a jar in the guest bedroom window. But storing it away in a box with sentimental things is an option too, if you don't want to see it all the time.

Great video. One thing I've learned to declutter is clothing that doesn't quite fit right. Even if it's a beautiful garment, if it's too big on my waist, too tight on my hips, etc. (and not a quick fix with a tailor), I have to say goodbye to it.

This is a weird one and I hope not controversial but if you’re not a thrifter / pre love type of person don’t force it. I gathered so much when my mother worked in a thrift shop and from friends passing on things on to me. I think I’m doing this great thing but what happens is I don’t just have same emotional attachment to things I didn’t buy myself. There is probably a million reasons for that but it just is, I’ve tried to fight it. I always been someone who saved for months to buy little one thing with the intention to keep so I really build a story around my items and as hard I try I can’t seem to with second hand items. Given the extra years before you had the item, if it’s just sitting there in your closet gathering dust it’s going to be even more unwearable when it’s time to get rid of it. What I do now is I put extra effort into looking after my new clothes and try keep in the state that when they do get donated that in good condition for the new owner.

Hmmmmm, I can see the deal with duplicate items if they are the same color and cut, I guess if we do laundry on a regular, we may never need it (until you damage it . tee hee). I cannot depend on things to bring me joy or make me happy, so that not going to work for me. You are right about having too much stuff takes up space and funds (you either have it in storage or have to have a big enough living space to store) Right now with covid, a lot of items will not be used because life has not return to events/social time for some of us and you don't want to be in that situation of trying to find items for the special occasion "We Back" party. Yeah, sell that $1,000 camera for $400 or just give it away, instead of actually playing around with it (would be made about the $600 loss. I am a hoarder, I just don't want to help myself, I like seeing stuff around that I had for a long time. Tee Hee! Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.
