Have you considered a USB audio interface? I have a couple of videos in my channel about the topic. Perhaps they might help.
,,for guitar,,recording ,,what could be best?,,,a behringer xenyx 502q,,which is a usb mixer or a behringer u phoria which a audio interface?
Wow, this is the best tutorial I have seen. I will go to your website, and I will donate something when I get paid. Thanks All the way, your incredible
I have studio master ER 31/EM31/EL31 (The Studiomaster Professional ER 31 series is a high quality duet VHF microphone system designed to suit the needs of various professional applications.) set in my university and i want to insert the cable with the connector converter into CPU (3.5 mm) to record voice for youtube videos is it possible to record ? help me please its urgent
Can mixer is instead of audio interface
Absolutely loving the "How It's Made" (the show) style of your videos. I'm not sure if this is what you were going for but either way it's a pretty spot on imitation and it's awesome.
@segythagreat Is the sound continuous, or at the peak of you syllables? Can you send me an MP3 so I have have a listen to it?
I would highly recommend an Audio Interface of some sort, or use the "line in" socket instead of a "mic in" socket that I used in the video, if your pc has one. The Audio interface will also help with any latency issues that may arise from using the standard on-bard audio device and it's driver, so it's by far a better idea. If you have an audio interface you probably will not need a mixer. Although mixers do come in handy sometime when you have to patch the signal in certain ways.
Being in front of the laptop, gives me a clue as to what might be happening. It might be that audacity might be using the internal microphone of the laptop. Maybe you can look a the settings of Audacity to see which device it is using for recording. I don't have a clear picture of what you have connected, your descriptions are very disjointed. So it is difficult to help. You mentioned FireWire, this is news to me... What is connected via FireWire to your laptop? Or what do you think should be?
Very well done for a newbie. Great ongoing commentary and explanations. I appreciate all the evident work that you put into this episode and the entire series. Value also is that it is timeless.
omg!!! thank you that's just what I'll do, im in love with the program all of a sudden. lol and if i have anymore questions I'll be back. your helpful indeed.
Thanx for making the tutorial....i have a query though. I understand you have a laptop with 2 ports for audio and microphone.. My laptop has a single port...then where/how to attach the 2 cables in the laptop?

There is a much better way of interconnecting audio with your laptop these days. And it has come down in price significantly. I would suggest that you look at getting a USB audio interface. Now if you do persist with your single socket laptop. It might be that it is only an output jack or that it is a dual purpose item. Dual purpose jacks have the special 4 point plug that carry the recording mic connection one of the pins and the output for the headphones on others. In order to make that would it is a bit of a mission. Especially because it might be difficult to find appropriate cabling for that without making your own. The USB audio interface might be a better solution for you.

Audio interface like M Audio M track
I've plugged my guitar directly into the input of my audio interface, plugged the usb from the interface into my macbook, the light is on and the option to use the usb is there in the 'sound' section of 'system preferences', but no sound comes out or is even detected when i play the guitar on garageband. Is there something else I'm not doing?
That's fantastic! How did you do you latency calculations? And how did you measure your latency. I'm sure people would love to know.
i loved it when u said "the female end of the mic" lol
LOL indeed, I can't remember what that was, but if it was worth downloading then it portably made me LOL a fair bit.
This info is brief but very beneficial... Thanks for all of your uploads.. Now I can start my home studio recording!
Sir great video. I try to record my song with karaoke track but the voice and music recorded mixed up on same track what should I do?
Hi! I did all of the stept in the video but my laptop still uses the build-in mic to record, which is very low quality.

Gerrit Fischer OK have a look in your sound setting whether there is an option of an external microphone. Usually you can access this from the little icon in the bottom right hand side in the task bar. Right click the little speaker and select recording devices. Have a look at the list to see if there is anything there other than your built in mic. If there is. Is iid you can select a device in the Audacity preferences for Recording devices. If you are still unsuccessful consider whether you want to spend some money on a USB audio interface. These devices make the inter-connectivity between audio devices and the computer much easier and cleaner. I've made a video on this. You should be able to find it in my channel.

In the list are the build-in mic and 'stereo mix' which is unactivated. if i activate it, nothing changes. I am using an Asus and the problem is that I have only one output. There is an icon next to this output which shows the headphone output and the mic input together. I have thought about just buying an adaptor to USB, but I want to be sure that it would work that way.
@Homeaudioacademy

Ok, I think in your case your laptop audio input jack uses a 3 ring mic/headphone connection. I would guess that when you stick in a headphone/mic headset, you are able to record from that device. However plugging in a standard mono or stereo jack would not work, or work very poorly. I would also guess that when the mic/headphone headset is plugged in another device would appear in your recording devices. I'm not sure what you mean by adaptor. By the way what are you trying to record? Vocals or Instruments?
I just subscribed!! Ur video is helpful
Hi there! I'm bout to get a small 4 channel mixer just to record voices. My question is: Is it possible (and advisable) to use the USB connection for recording, or do I have to plug an additional cable from the mixer to the PC's mic input? Thanks!
The explanation is SO clear, I LOL-ed at "The first step is to unfold your microphone stand."
what cables did you use to plug the mixer with the laptop?

I recently got Behringer Q802 USB mixer for so I could do a dual PC streaming/podcast setup. My audio setup is as follows: Main PC>Audioengine D1 DAC>Behringer Q802 USB>Behringer UCA222>Streaming PC. I have to use the Behringer UCA222 because for some reason when I have my capture card (which duplicates my main screen onto my streaming PC) and mixer plugged into the same PC, it creates a very annoying buzzing sound. The Mic I am using for this setup is the Audio Technica AT2020 XLR version, which is also connected to the mixer. The problem I am having is that I can't use a noise gate to eliminate ambient noise, because all of my other audio is being pulled through the mixer as well. I know it would have been easier to get a USB mic, but I wear closed back headphones, and I needed a way to monitor my own voice as well. Is there any way I can separate my mic and line in channels, while still being able to monitor my voice through my headset?

I have a M Audio USB condenser microphone… is that good enough to start with?? or should i buy another one to connect with the interface? It would be really great if u help me with this.. Thanks.
awesome!! this been very helpful, thanks!!!
This wat i was looking for two weeks now thanks
Sounds good. Thanks for the help. Really appreciate it.
hi. can i ask something. how to fix your video camera to make you recording and good quality.
Thanks! If I turn the levels down too much on the mixer I get a hiss background sound later when I mix and bring the volume up to proper levels. If I turn the mixer up to much than its distorted. Its a really fine line, at least for my setup. REALLY liked your videos on home recording! Great production!
@macikosan does the line out to the mixer have anything to do with recording or is it purely to listen to the recording through the mixer
Hey can i use andriod for this set up i dont have allready a loptop.? And how much will it cost for all?
Hi...how can i record vocals and guitar at the same time with this mixer.. i try to do that end up getting lots of distortions. could you please make a short Tutorial for us... thank you. :) I've got Alto ZMX 52 Mixer
Love the video. Is there anyway you can help me hook up a presonus audiobox 2x2 usb, a Alesis mixer, laptop, and condenser mic. I do a podcast and want to use those things for a clearer sound. I normally run (3) mics. Please help me. Thanks in advance. I subscribed to your page.

is there a clipping on audio interface too? what do you recommend on simple keyboard stereo recording, usb or line in? thank you! ( my keyboard is not mono) :)
@Homeaudioacademy
7 жыл бұрын
Is there clipping? If you mean does the audio input clip when over-saturated with signal? If Yes, then the answer is Yes. If you mean as an effect then very few have a "clipping" feature that can handle over-modulation. Keyboard question - either will be fine if you have an audio interface. The benefit of USB is that there is less chance of external noise, the problem might be with latency, which is when you press the key on your keyboard, there will be some delay to when you hear the sound out of your computer. This is more related to your hardware and software more than anything else. I would try USB first especially if you don't have an Audio Interface.

AudioBytes i see.. thank you audio bytes!
great tutorial mate, very nicely done
Great video! Thanks. you mentioned to get a "condenser" microphone. I wonder if the "dynamic" microphone would eliminate ambient noise since it picks up only from close range. This would apply to both recording guitar amp and vocal (singing), would it not? What other benefit, then, a condenser mic has for home recording?
Hello, Thanks for the great videos. What do you mean by, "Riding the Fader down"? Are you adjusting the level on the mixer to reduce ambient noise? If so which one, the channel level or main mix level? Or are you adjusting the level on audacity. Thank you
@CKS5000 Yes you could, but why not have a clean signal in the first place. Which tool do you intend to use for noise reduction?
Thank u so much for the detailed tutorial. This is the best tutorial I have watched. I have been looking for a tutorial that I can easily understand. More videos sir! I just subscribed.

Please help me get money to open up my studio am an artist from Kenya
I just bought a Behringer USB502 mixer. Would the set up for Audio cables be different with mine because of the USB cable? Also, I will be using my desktop pc with an external soundcard.....and my instruments will be Keyboards, Mic.
@shylonxy Probably a good start for you would be an audio interface. Most of the functions that a mixer does internally can be replicated in software. Just make sure that the audio interface has the +48V phantom power available for your microphone. I'm taking a guess here but your microphone may need this in order to work correctly. you need to be more specific as to brands and models of microphone to get a more definite answer here.
Hello there, what I'm trying to do with audacity is recording harmony on multiple tracks but the problem I'm facing is when I play the first track or the guide track to guide me while I'm recording the second track so I'm duplicating the first track to the second track like on the second track I can hear the lead as well as the harmony. How can I can I play the first track to guide me like a click while I'm recording the second track without duplicating?
First of all, thank you for your awesome videos and tutorials!.. I recently bought an eurorack like the one on the video and also an mxl 770, I have also bought an allen & heath xone 22. I notice that in 3:25 you say "this is not the best way to connect into the computer", I agree, though I would like to know which would be the best way to take out the most of my equipment?... thank you!
do you know if i can still record with the fast track with out having the speakers .. like just with my micc fastrack and computer? or do i ''need speakers''? please let me know ..! thank you!!
I am setting up my home studio. Learned from watching this video!
This is an excellent point you brought up. Dynamic microphones a less sensitive than condenser microphones, making them ideal for certain applications. I have a video in my channel that does a comparison between a dynamic and a condenser microphone to show the differences. The benefit of a condenser microphone, which is essentially it's dynamic range and sensitivity can also become a problem when recording in a noisy environment.
for the connection between the computer and mixer, is it a 6.35mm male end that goes into the mixer?
Great work.. 👍👍👍 I was searching for this type of video... Tq guys

tqsm brother for this tutorial.... very good explanation
nice very clear n cool presentation dear
Thank for the info..1 more thing..whenever I try to record vocals I have a static sound or a fuzz sound along with the vocals, now is that normal or i'am doing something wrong?
i have Teyun mixer USB without power, i use mic 6.35 the mic sound is very low, question, should i use XRL mic or use amplifier on it or both? thank you
@Homeaudioacademy
5 жыл бұрын
Does the mixer have a mic gain control? The 6.35 and xlr does not necessarily mean that one will have a higher signal then the other. The sensitivity of the mic plays a big part here. As well as any amplification before the mic.
sir which mixer will be better to get a HD quality out in PC.
@macikosan I turned almost all the volume pans into maximum level even the software i use , yet i still can here anything . But maybe I lack something , does the headphones need separate cable in the line in 3/4 connected to my PC ?
im just a beginer recording some songs. so is ths compulsary to use mixer for connecting microphone for pc ?? r else i can connect it directly to linein r i can connect using my old amplifier i have...
Can you tell me which Sound King microphone you have. What's the model number? I'm trying to establish whether it is a powered or passive microphone. This will determine which additional devices, if any, you will need.
Very helpful. Do I need an external sound card for recording. Or the mixer is enough to record voice and guitar.?

You might be better off with a USB audio interface instead of a mixer. what mic do you have?
Hi sir this mixer can i use to my android phone to connect tape out or monitor out to TRRS cable to my android for external audio source?
hey sir, what cable to be use on a RMB-PMX1812 mixer? can i put the record cable on the headphone output on my mixer? can i record sound using the headphone output? or just on the stereo output only? please help. Thanks.
Would something like the Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, a FireWire interface be similar to the USB interface you mention? Great videos by the way. Thanks
I have dynamic microphone and what I do is directly connect it to laptop using 6.5mm to 3.5mm jack converter. Does this have any effect on recording or laptop? vocal recording is okay but guitar recording is not quite good. thanks.
@macikosan thanks for the reply! i've got one more question, if you don't mind... i just got in the XENYX 802 (for like $33 on Amazon prime!) because I needed to have at least 4 inputs for our purpose... i used to just use a Lexicon Alpha (2 input audio interface) but, obviously, it isn't adequate anymore for my purposes.... would it be better to go straight in to the PC from the mixer, or from the mixer to the Lexicon Alpha and THEN go in to the PC? thank you so much for your help!
hey macikosan... i gt a macbook pro n i want to use it to record my band's songs....... d mixer i have has two output.... will i be able to connect one to amplifier n other to macbook and then use garageband??? + hw will i be able get the stereo effect......???? thanks
Perhaps you do, can you describe how you are connecting your system together at the moment?

can i use my g2.1u guitar processor as audio interface as it provides me with the usb recrding,,,, but when i pluged in and record via audacity,,it sounds bad ,,not like sound in monitor(amp)
@macikosan Actually just solved this issue, but now I hear another. It sounds like its delayed when I try to record. The sound is off by a second. I have a sound blaster audigdy 2 card, 1 gb ram, I3 processor on win 7 and not running anything in the background. What do you suggest?
Hi Helen, yes it should be very simple to do this. Which program did you use to record your voice. I need to know this so I can instruct you on how to turn this "mono" file into a pseudo stereo file that plays out of both speakers. Essentially the process is to copy the file to the right channel link it as a stereo pair and export it as a stereo file.
which music production or mastering book do you recommended? I'm from Venezuela and I don't know talk english perfectly D:

@whosbaddlillyc09 In regards to the software - Did the software go though the installation process? Or when you try to install it, or does the error come up when after you have installed the software? Also it would be good to know what Operating System you are running (Wingows XP, Vista etc). Also if you can find out a little more about your computer - it helps knowing what type of machine you have. As far as your keyboard is concerned - yes the keyboard does not have a "sound bank".
very informative series! liked it.
Can you please tell me how to get a Bluetooth one to work without wiring it? I am so lost on that part and the instruction manual was a bit useless.
I have a laptop with one slot for audio in and out. How do I connect a mixer to my DAW, route it back to the mixer where I have plugged in my mic and line inputs, and then get it to the speakers without compromising the effects I had saved beforehand? I don't want to use hardware processors.. just my Cubase 8.5 pro. I only have a 2 in 2 out audio interface but I have five singers and three instrumentalists.. I want all the saved effects to run as I sing or play along the track. THIS QUESTION IS FOR LIVE PERFORMANCES.. PLEASE HELP ME OUT ( I DON'T WANT TO RECORD MY PERFORMANCE LIVE)
hello ther first of i love your tut serie is really a great piece of work thank you so much for it. i have one question im running an imac an akg120 and a tescam us122 mkII, it does have a phantom power switch allready so can i get a mixer unit that does not have phantom power build in? are there some out there who are priced around 150 dollar and are apple to connect via usb? thank you so much once more
Thanks for this walkthrough. I have perhaps only one question as to comparing using analog mixer directly hooked up to a PC / laptop as opposed to using a dedicated audio interface aka external soundcard, like the Scarlett etc. Does analog mixer just naturally have a fairly high noise floor (which will require the extra work trimming them out during post)? So is it better to just go with audio interface and not use a mixer, if it's only a simple setup--I'm planning for max 2 mics input and prooobably one instrument. Or it could be the hardware unit. I'm considering the small mixer from Alto, ZMX52, since from what I gathered Behringer is notorious for a lot of noise even with their recent models.
@Homeaudioacademy
7 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the gain stage of the mixer or Audio Interface. It could go either way. Ideally you would want to keep your signal chain as short as possible. With the quality of electronics we are getting now usually a lone USB audio interface will do the job. What I do in the video is certainly not best practice. USB audio interface would be less susceptible to EMI and RF noise.
@vrafaeli
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the technical explanation, I'm a little bit on the fence about this. The entry-level decent audio interface could cost around twice of a mixer, but if it really rids most of the hiss it might be worth the trouble of trying to doctor the recording in post. I'll perhaps just go with Samson usb mic for starter and think about purchasing either one of these in the future.
