I have learned it's important to check and exam cat in general and especially ears closely, it's easy to mistake the scratching for something else or it going unnoticed if not aware to look within the ear on a daily basis. Ear mites are very common like other problems for cats that can be prevented or reduce the effect of infection. Cats ears like eyes are very sensitive in general and some cats may be more sensitive. The scratching and shaking at ears and the black "coffee ground" debri are signs.. Diagnosed easily at exam.

Thank you for this. Our cat was scratching a lot last summer and the vet prescribed 2 different antibiotics but the infection seemed to keep coming back. The last resort was a steroid drop that has to be given on an ongoing basis now. She also suggested we change her diet to HA kibble and I also give her ZD canned meat. She said some infections can be more like an allergy or sensitivity to food or something else….. our cat has been on this for about 6 months and seems to be helping. But our cat does not like getting the drops!

Thank you very much for educating us about these things & when to be concerned! Due to cats' evasive behavior & roaming nature, we really need to pay attention when they're available to us at home. We have 5 rescues that are hard to pin down & hide, rather than show, when they don't feel well. So different from dogs! You're an awesome Vet & much appreciated!

I've been to 4 different vets because my cat (who is 5 yrs old now) has been head shaking since I've had him (4 years) . Have had him sedated and ear lavaged, treated for bacterial/fungal overgrowth, etc. no ear mites ever. Finally after 4 years my vet decided it's just wax over production from allergies. Feel terrible for him only getting brief relief a few times in his life. Never identified any certain allergies and spent thousands

Our male tuxie, now 14, has had the problem of itchy ears/overproduction of wax since we adopted him during his 3rd year. He has never been diagnosed with an actual infection, but does have a history of many allergies: food, flea & environmental. He has outgrown a lot of his food allergies, but he always has a hard time with the spring pollen making the itching worse. At one point, soy was also identified as a culprit. Cleaning his ears with a solution that has some cortisone in it does seem to help. He is also a 100% indoor cat.

Probably food allergies. Major culprits are grains and poultry.

Poor kitty's. They don't come with an instruction book. Really liking this information you give us. It might help kitty's if they didn't rub everything with their heads.

Thanks for these informations. Look at those cats sitting on the table letting the vet checks them. They are so calm. My cat would never allow anyone to be near his ears. I try to check his regularly because sometimes he does shake his ears and scratch but not excessively so I try to check his ears. He will bite or scratch me.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for this video. We suspect one of our cats might have an ear infection. The fact that you published this video right here right now doesn't feel like a coincidence. Truly a Godsend. But I do have a question. Can ear infections cause a cat to not want to eat? Our cat has not only been shaking Her head around, but she's also been neglecting eating as much as she used to. So I was just wondering if that could also be a symptom.

I have a cat that has recovered from this but other cats that still have mites, as they are asymptomatic meaning they don't show signs but have mites so still need to complete duration of treatment.

Yes, an ear infection can cause a decreased appetite... It's a lot like when a human gets a cold and feels too crummy to eat their dinner... EDIT: Hope your baby feels better now ❤

I wipe my boys ears out about once a week with a baby wipe. This is part of our weekly self check. I'm a bit of an over bearing cat mom(in a good way 😋), so to speak but concerning cats I don't think that's a bad thing as they tend to hide the fact that something might be off with them.

And most vets are incompetent!!! One of my kitties had issues that a vet kept saying it was an usual ear issue. $8000 later and a week in an emergency hospital could have been avoided has the so called "vet" was incompetent.

This video came at just about good timing as my 8 year old cat has had airplane ears for a long while, but I thought it was earmites or allergy. Took him to vet last week, and he has polyps in one ear and was medicated with an anti immflammatory, antibacterial ear gel. He's going back for 2nd treatment with gel. The vet he was going to would only Rx ear drops that have to be refrigerated, and cats do not let me put them in the ear and if I did get them in theyd shake their head violently and I'd get my eye medicated with the steroid drops. These had to be put in 2x's day and everytime I came with the bottle the cats ran and hid. The gel seems to have worked pretty well minimal airplane ear and shakes. We'll see with the second treatment.

My cat was a rescue from street, he always had one ear down which i think may have been caused by street fight or defect. It's just smaller. I had him checked and there was no infection or mites. Still treated it, cat still scratches ear and occasionally hard. Should i try a different vet?

You need to amend the word scratching as it has been misspelled - thanks for your advice which is very useful.

Wish I had seen this a couple years ago. At a routine checkup the vet found one of my cats had an ear infections. In retrospect I should have caught it sooner and brought him to the vet a couple months earlier. I still feel guilty that he suffered with it so long and I didn't realize it.
