Hahaha this is gold. my wife and I just moved here from UK and this has been very helpful. Some things we struggled with: -unless you tell them with card people always assume you pay cash -you MUST buy enough food to get you through Sunday or you dont eat -Always have an appointment to do anything bureaucratic -always take fuererschein UND zulassungschein -idk how to deal with the Viennese ppl staring all the time -how to give a tip: you need to say the new total

Haha, and that is more or less the same in every part of german speaking areas (especially the larger cities). If you need a break do an Ausflug to Czechia or Slovakia. People are a bit more chill there (even I as a German need a break from beeing unfriendly to people sometimes). PS: The staring is not a sign of agression or distrust (for the most part). We just enjoy observing the looks and manirisms of our fellow human beeings and if you manage to stare back, you somtimes even evoke a friendly reaction (a smile or a funny comment). So don't be shy, assert your dominance and have a pleasant stay!

@@kaydubsthekoifish yep, exactly. Basically, the waiter calls out the sum, and you round to whatever you'd like and say that number. Something like this: Waiter: you wanted to pay? Customer: yes Waiter: 33.25€ Customer: 35 (without the €, usually - this is the "new total", the thing you'll end up paying) Waiter: thank you! This system allows you to a) make the process more seamless (no fidelling around for coins) and b) relieves the pressure of trying to figure out a fair tip. As you can tell, if you're not familiar with the concept, you'd be quite confused about what's going on here. However, most austrians just somehow got to know the concept without learning it anywhere or speaking about it directly. You kind of just get to know this etiquette. Hence, I commented.

Ist aber echt so hahah. Ich bin eigentlich ein glücklicher Mensch, aber sobald ich in die U-Bahn einsteige oder bei Spendensammlern vorbeikomme, sofort Grumpy Face. Ich frag mich, wann ich mir das angewöhnt habe. Wir sind eigentlich nicht unfreundlich, es gibt bei uns einfach zu viele Schnorrer. Deswegen wirken wir so hahaha - Selbst, wenn ich Abends heimgehe, so ganz allein, schau ich böse drein, man hat irgendwas die das Gefühl, ein Energieschild öffnet sich hahah

All of those apply to Germany, except "zweite Kassa bitte" We HAD that system once, some stores even had a little bell you could ring to mark the demand. It was killed. If you scream that in Germany staff is usually already informed and they're busy keeping the rest of the goddamn store alive with 2-3 people at most. We cope by optimizing our shopping situation. Bring a backpack and fill that thing up so you're not surprised by additional bags, pack while the cashier is still scanning, just give the smallest number of bills fitting or swipe the card, you paying precisely is usually slower than letting the cashier handle it, tell him/her to keep the receipt, if you're late with packing announce they can already scan the next guy. Just waste as little time as possible, always.

As someone who was born and raised here (in my 20s now), I find that it's a lot better with younger people and that it's worse with older generations. What I do find off-putting is people who seem to be "proud" of Vienna for having the reputation for being grumpy (apparently we were ranked the top unfriendliest city for expats, but we do consistently rank best in terms of quality of life worldwide); they think the "Wiener Grant" is charming or a personality, which I do not agree with at all. That's why I always try to be helpful and friendly when, say, I get asked for directions by tourists, haha.

honestly it will help u! when i moved to vienna in the first month i was literally pushed out of the tram cuz i didn’t get off fast enough 💀🤣
Hahaha this is gold. my wife and I just moved here from UK and this has been very helpful. Some things we struggled with: -unless you tell them with card people always assume you pay cash -you MUST buy enough food to get you through Sunday or you dont eat -Always have an appointment to do anything bureaucratic -always take fuererschein UND zulassungschein -idk how to deal with the Viennese ppl staring all the time -how to give a tip: you need to say the new total

Haha, and that is more or less the same in every part of german speaking areas (especially the larger cities). If you need a break do an Ausflug to Czechia or Slovakia. People are a bit more chill there (even I as a German need a break from beeing unfriendly to people sometimes). PS: The staring is not a sign of agression or distrust (for the most part). We just enjoy observing the looks and manirisms of our fellow human beeings and if you manage to stare back, you somtimes even evoke a friendly reaction (a smile or a funny comment). So don't be shy, assert your dominance and have a pleasant stay!

@@kaydubsthekoifish yep, exactly. Basically, the waiter calls out the sum, and you round to whatever you'd like and say that number. Something like this: Waiter: you wanted to pay? Customer: yes Waiter: 33.25€ Customer: 35 (without the €, usually - this is the "new total", the thing you'll end up paying) Waiter: thank you! This system allows you to a) make the process more seamless (no fidelling around for coins) and b) relieves the pressure of trying to figure out a fair tip. As you can tell, if you're not familiar with the concept, you'd be quite confused about what's going on here. However, most austrians just somehow got to know the concept without learning it anywhere or speaking about it directly. You kind of just get to know this etiquette. Hence, I commented.

Ist aber echt so hahah. Ich bin eigentlich ein glücklicher Mensch, aber sobald ich in die U-Bahn einsteige oder bei Spendensammlern vorbeikomme, sofort Grumpy Face. Ich frag mich, wann ich mir das angewöhnt habe. Wir sind eigentlich nicht unfreundlich, es gibt bei uns einfach zu viele Schnorrer. Deswegen wirken wir so hahaha - Selbst, wenn ich Abends heimgehe, so ganz allein, schau ich böse drein, man hat irgendwas die das Gefühl, ein Energieschild öffnet sich hahah

kannst auch einfach ignoriern und weitergehn oder nein sagen. fundraiser umgeh ich meist. und blos nicht ins gesicht schaun denen, das ist wie ne einladung.
A good old "schleichts eich, i hob ka Zeit für den Schaß" to the fund-raiser is also a good weapon.

Wenn ich allein unterwegs bin, dann habe ich mein Grumpy Face auf. Wenn ich mit einer Freundin unterwegs bin, dann sind wir immer irgendwie lustig und gut drauf. Was passiert? Wir wurden von 3 Bettlern und einem Spendensammler angesprochen. Niemals auf das Grumpy Face vergessen.

All of those apply to Germany, except "zweite Kassa bitte" We HAD that system once, some stores even had a little bell you could ring to mark the demand. It was killed. If you scream that in Germany staff is usually already informed and they're busy keeping the rest of the goddamn store alive with 2-3 people at most. We cope by optimizing our shopping situation. Bring a backpack and fill that thing up so you're not surprised by additional bags, pack while the cashier is still scanning, just give the smallest number of bills fitting or swipe the card, you paying precisely is usually slower than letting the cashier handle it, tell him/her to keep the receipt, if you're late with packing announce they can already scan the next guy. Just waste as little time as possible, always.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!! SO TRUE! I live in Vienna now, after three years in Canada. And I am amazed, nay shocked, at how grumpy and closed off people are. While a Canadian 'sorry, excuse me' would help so much of these situations! (PS: it is not just Vienna that does this)

As someone who was born and raised here (in my 20s now), I find that it's a lot better with younger people and that it's worse with older generations. What I do find off-putting is people who seem to be "proud" of Vienna for having the reputation for being grumpy (apparently we were ranked the top unfriendliest city for expats, but we do consistently rank best in terms of quality of life worldwide); they think the "Wiener Grant" is charming or a personality, which I do not agree with at all. That's why I always try to be helpful and friendly when, say, I get asked for directions by tourists, haha.
