Of course a movie director, musician, author or any sub division of art would be the same as an unprofessional, untrained hobbyist. Sure, let me be pretentious, I don't care about Michael Bay but rather the idea that someone would justify bad directing by claiming that there isn't much to be expected from a movie director. You sound rather pretentious yourself by the way, equating a career that can be worth millions of dollars and has to be studied almost as much as any other job today, to a mere past time. Would you place literature, music, game design, theatre and fine arts at the same level as that of a sunday painter as well? Quite fine with me, I cannot wait to see your next big hobby film at the theater near me.

    Actually, George Miller could teach Bay a handful of lessons on how to make an action movie that doesn't take its audience for idiots, where the action is readable, where CG is used the most wisely, where characters aren't drowned in the frantic action and tons of explosions, all of this without racist stereotyping or obnoxious product placement

    Love the look and feel of Michael Bay films. One thing that really made it difficult for me to accept his talent as a director (at least when I was a bit younger) was the way he decided to make the Transformers look - sort of a selfish perception as I was just really excited to see the Autobots and Decepticons I loved from the original tv show and animated movie brought to life on screen. Instead I think we got something more geared towards a younger generation. Great content, and the information about Bay's rise in Hollywood was very insightful. I agree, he deserves respect for his obvious talent, but recognize that not everyone will see his movies and appreciate the hard work that goes into making them, myself included at times.

  • @TheBoringAddress

    The ONE THING I truly respect about Michael Bay is that he will always try to use practical effects and working on location, even when it's just for shooting explosions and then adding the robots digitally. Other filmmakers (looking at you, most of early Marvel movies and Zach SNyder) would just shove CGI for the whole set-piece.

    Enjoyment isn't the same thing as having a critical insight into filmmaking. I enjoy watching all kinds of garbage. I don't let that get in the way of being able to recognize when a filmmaker has really done something special and innovative - and when he/she is falling back on clichés or crafting films that are designed to appeal to "lowest common denominator" popular taste. The great thing about cinema is that it has plenty of room for all kinds of filmmaking. But it's also true that there's an art of cinema which some filmmakers just don't ever really get close to. And some mass market filmmaking is full of clichés. The more film you see and the morev discerning you are, the more those clichés start to grate on you. It happened to me around age 28. At 40, i now find Bay's movies only semi-wstchable. He's not the worst, but he's extremely predictable

    Michael Bay despite what the meta sheep and hipster liberal arts school flunkys think is actually a cinematic genius and has more than earned his success already. I really found a lot of his stuff mediocre when I was younger, but after the first transformers film and onward his level of big budget blockbuster storytelling, visual effects work, and cinematic technique became positively top notch. Sure his films still has problems, but you know what lame brains.... ALMOST EVERY FILM EVER MADE HAS ITS PROBLEMS TOO!!! And if you havent noticed, a lot of complaints in his films aren't necessarily issues in film composition (outside of some occasional narrative snags) but are much more often just people's entitled opinions that are truly subjective, that they try to distort as objective criticism. Establishment loving critics are biased against him and need to be taken with a pitcher of salt to put it kindly. It is complete bullshit and he is putting up with it a lot better than ANY of his haters could if they possessed a fraction of his talent. So do us all a favor and grow the hell up already! I can't wait to see where he takes the transformers franchise, as well as what stories he has to tell additionally through his unique style of film making. Keep up the good work Michael! History will look on you much more kindly than your lame brain haters!

    I'm not a Michael Bay hater. I find his movies fun to to watch and pretty cool. I understand why people hate him, but I find it disheartening that everyone decides to hate his movies only because he directs or produces them. the acting in all of his films are so dull well I at least give the actors credit for trying their best. the Action is very confusing ' how? I understand what's going on. He has ruined all of our childhoods 1 - Not ALL. he only did TWO franchises like that: "TransFormers" and "TMNT" 2 - just because a movie based on something you love from when u were a kid is bad doesn't mean it's Ruining or Destroying it. it's not like that whatever new material Bay added is gonna squeeze it's way into the original media at all. it's just a new version that was made for a new generation of kids. He's even ruined our childhoods by producing remakes of our favorite horror movies 1 - again, it's a new version. 2 - What child was ever watching these R rated horror movies with gore, nudity and strong language? I bet you guys only got to see it when you were more older like at the age of 20. why does he have to make Every Single Female Character we see do sexy things? he Doesn't do it with every female character. does he do it to the woman we see talking back at Bear in "Armageddon"? NO. did he do it to the Dean we see for a brief second in "Revenge of the Fallen"? NO. He needs to stop making all his black characters racially offensive He doesn't do that to ALL his black characters. there's General Kimsey who was black in "Armageddon" and he didn't do anything offensive. sure he did swear but he didn't do raps or anything like that. He needs to take the G1 Megatron and Get rid of his Megatron and use G1 for good No. he shouldn't. I get it. you want to see the G1 characters come back. but here's the reason why they get re-designed: Their designs in G1 are laughable. they're just.. Freaking ridiculous. those designs wouldn't work. There. I said it. I'm sorry but I think Bay's designs are awesome. he places Explosions Everywhere! in a Street, in the sky, in a Toaster, every single place. not really. he only does that in places like a Street, a Building, the sky(Only when a plane fight goes on), in the desert, and in the forest. and mostly even a city. not a toaster or a Baby Carriage or anything like that. His films are the Most Horrible, Despicable, Terrible, awful, and Mortifying movies of All Time! anyone who likes or even LOVES his movies should be ashamed! death to Bay! he is an EVIL MAN! you guys are taking this guy's films very seriously. sure there are bad directors like Uwe Boll who always makes terrible video game based films, or M Night Shaymalan who did make Two good films, but his movies got worst as time went on. just because a bad director is still in the film industry doesn't mean he's "EVIL" or anything. he even respects people's opinions. don't believe me? Read This: www.cinemablend.com/new/Michael-Bay-Transformers-Critics-Let-Them-Hate-43665.html with people like Uwe Boll on the other hand, he challanges critics to boxing matches and wins. which is one of the reasons why Boll is a terrible director. he's even won TWO "Worse-Sense-Of-Direction awards of "BloodRayne" and "Alone in the Dark" Bay did win One of those, but it was for "Pearl Harbor" (Which I can admit was a bad movie) some of his films have even had Oscar Nominations. and the fact that people call his fan Trump Supporters and Idiots is just sad because they just don't get that we have our own opinions on everything. I even know a person who doesn't hate "Speed Racer". so if your'e gonna Attack someone because they like Michael Bay's work, just please be calm and respect our opinions.

    Exactly, innovation can make or break an industry, same goes for the one who started the innovation, look at shrek, everything goes cgi, hardly any traditional animation, or South Park, many replicators with no one knowing why the show is good. Michael bay may be ballsy and took many risks, I give him that, but some of these facts can be taken as egotistical. And about the fact that bay makes films for teenage boys, it pissed me off not because of what he choices to make, it's the fact that there are so many other filmmakers, (much like Michael bay with bad boys) are trying to get their start and the studio won't hardly give a newcomer money for a great film concept yet they keep giving him hundreds of millions of dollars meant for one small audience group!

Thing is, most of what I dislike about Transformers would be gone if the movie was about the Gobots (as I don't remember what any of their characters were like) or a completely new franchise. Pearl Harbor wasn't a terrible movie, but depicted the whole Pearl Harbor attack poorly. That movie would have been better is it was not based on a historical event.

Jackson, and glorified graphic violence. Then there's Tim Burton: Always using the same over the top dark/gothic tone and casting Johnny Depp in almost every male lead role. Both directors mentioned are among the most overrated filmmakers of the modern age.

    Did you just imply that George Miller copied Michael Bay's style? Meaning the filmmaker who's lauded for creating imaginative and exhilarating action took notes from one who's constantly bashed for his exhausting mess of random destruction? Apparently, if Bay used the technique, then by default he either invented it or inspired its use. **smh**

    @batman88891

    Too be fair, just because someone is extremely disliked, it doesn't mean they can't have good points or do good things. Fury Road's action definitely was inspired by the most recent big action movies, albeit with its own twist on them. Also, when someone is the first or most popular person who does a thing, yeah, generally speaking when other people do it, by default they either invented it or inspired others to copy it. The chances of someone coming up with the exact same idea within that short of a time period, after that idea was already popularized by being featured in some of the highest grossing movies of all time, all by themselves with no outside influence is HIGHLY unlikely.

  • @jp3813

    batman88891 Fury Road's action was done through traditional filmmaking w/ the heavy use of storyboards, practical effects, stunt work, etc... Bay is famous for his CGI and explosions. Even then, he's not the most famous among other filmmakers when it comes to those aspects (ex: James Cameron).

  • @batman88891

  • @jp3813

    @jp3813

    7 жыл бұрын

    batman88891 More like things that were already popular among action directors so Bay took part in it. The problem here is that you're looking at the box office results and equating that w/ inspiration. There's a difference between audiences recognizing filmmaking techniques and filmmakers learning from others. For example, Jackie Chan is less successful than Bay and Stallone in Hollywood. Which prevented most American audiences from realizing that Tango & Cash and Bad Boys 2 ripped off scenes directly from Police Story (1985). Hence, just b/c Bay is more famous than Miller doesn't mean that Miller was inspired by anything that Bay did.

The humor is low brow, the characters are annoying and some borderline racist, his effects are nothing special and he overuses explosions to the point that they have no effect anymore. He appeals to the mass audience which as a whole are dumb and don't require any sort of intelligence when making a film. So hate him for being smart and unique in filmmaking? Also, hate him for influencing the majority of action films that we see today?

    What I dislike about Michael Bay is that he has all the know-how and equipment to make some of the greatest movies ever made, but he just outright refuses to.

    NOPE!!! I've seen countless films before he got his brake with Bad Boys doing what he does and better.. For the record I think Bad Boys is the only decent piece of work he's ever done. Sequel was shit the Transformers films are shit.. Pearl Harbour was shit.. The Island was shit.. Pain and Gain was shit.. And lets leave off with TMNT being shit as well.. Oh and the point about using a camera because it moves around being a Bay revolution is bogus as many directors have looked for that kind of camera movement.. And arguably the film that did the scene in question first and better was Children of Mens car scene. Peace *Drop the Mic*

    TMNT was not directed by Bay, he was one of the producers. For unknown - *cough* marketing *cough* - reasons, it was his name that was splashed all over with the movie.

    I don't disrespect Michael Bay, he's just a product of today's culture. I disrespect the people who keep paying his salary: filmgoers. Have you ever noticed something: on rotten tomatoes there's a list of the ten high grooming films of the week? Most of the time that list is in reverse order with rotten at the top and a few fresh ones at the bottom. Yes I blame audiences for Michael Bay.

    Lol I can live with that I'm thankful I grew up with movies like transformers, pearl harbor, bad boys, not every movie needs to be deep and sophisticated people want to have a fun time and he delivers on that.

    The fast pace and sudden slow motion was not a Bay invention. It was a technique made popular by Japanese anime. They even have a word for it. (Merihari)

    I like Bay more than most but some of your arguments are extremely flawed. 1. James Cameron praised his use of 3D as well. That being said, I've never heard any producers/critic/filmmaker praise his sense of storytelling. No one says Michael Bay cannot capture beautiful images, he definitely has a great eye, but he's a piss poor storyteller. He has no sense of pace or character development. And before you blame it on the scripts ; he's a producer. He gets to choose who writes his scripts. And as an example of a talented filmmaker, the script of Point Break is quite horrific, yet Katheryn Bigelow turned it into a classic. 2. I appreciate his no-compromise attitude. This argument is fine. 3. I don't see why I should respect the fact that he doesn't use storyboards and other techniques; they exist for a good reason. Maybe if he had used them in Transformers 4, I would have been able to tell what the fuck was fighting what during the action scenes. 4. The argument started fine, then you had to turn him into Hollywood White Martin Luther King Jr. He launched the career of Will Smith and we're all grateful for that (except people with no soul) but he's very glad to perpetuate Hollywood racism when his African American charicatures robots make Asian audiences laugh. He took a risk with Bad Boys, which I respect, but ultimately, he's just interested in making succesful movies, whether they appeal to young African American teenagers or racist Asian audiences. 5. No issue with this argument either. Will Smith is worth suffering the careers of Shia LaBeaf and Megan Fox. 6. While Bay is indeed one of the most influencial filmmakers of this generation, it doesn't really inspire respect in me. It just makes me disrespect his copycats. I'll add that while Michael Bay has no idea how to film an action scene, he's one of those directors who know how to use minimal CGI to improve his practical effects. It's not visible in his Transformers movies because giant robots are hard to do practically, but in all his other movies, he always make the right choices.

    I agree with almost everything, but the sudden use of slow motion in action scenes comes from the films of Sam Peckinpah, specially The Wild Bunch. And who actually used it first was Arthur Penn in the final scene of Bonnie and Clyde.
