6 Reasons To Buy The GH5 Over the A7S III

Фильм және анимация

In 2021 there are actually some serious reasons to consider buying the GH5 over the A7S III - I name 6 - well actually 8 if you watch the whole video.
I think the Sony A7S III is an awesome camera, but people may be surprised to find it lacking some features that come with the Panasonic GH5.

    The bad reputation for gh5 autofocus isn’t really true. Use native LUMIX lenses and you’ll find that autofocus works pretty well with most of them. The bad rep for gh5 is a result of the metabones converter. Check out the metabones site and their app note points out all the problems with hunting and other autofocus problems that the metabones causes. Try even the cheap LUMIX 12-32mm zoom and the focus works perfectly - no hunting, accurate and quick continuous focus. If you use a converter with Sony it has the similar problems. Most people seem to use native lenses with Sony and EF lenses with a metabones hence the perception that Sony is so much better. Don’t get me wrong, gh5 autofocus isn’t perfect but it’s not nearly as bad as people keep saying and it’s actually pretty good with LUMIX lenses that are designed for continuous autofocus (as opposed to the ones that are not recommended for video use).

    It’s true - with firmware updates - it’s very useable with native glass. But when it comes down to non-personal projects, I don’t feel good trusting the autofocus on the GH5. I still get some pulsing and some focus shifting. In fact, I’ve never used autofocus for paid work - but if I had the A7S3 or the FX3 - I might consider it. But everyday use - the GH5 is probably good enough. I actually should do a video about it!!

    Cool vid. Heres the thing tho: I own a GH5, a GH5s and an A7Siii and the ONE killer feature is auto-focus. If you are planning on doing some focus pulling for a short, etc. its fine too. but otherwise, for Vlogging, for my YT videos, for a run and gun set-up you just cannot use a GH5. Same for low-light, my GH5s can handle low-light WAY better but here again, no IBIS so unusable without tripod or gimbal. Also, V-Log costs additional money (so weird) on the GH5 and the Sony can also display assist when shooting S-Log gamma 3. the ONE thing I miss a LOT tho is the 180degree shutter... that was a bit of a shocker for me. Otherwise all the features you say are very correct and I agree! Take care

    GH5 is still such a solid choice for video, all about your individual use case though. Sold my GH5 over a year ago as I was convinced the GH6 was about to be released and wanted to be ready for the upgrade. Stuffed up there. However, in the following 10 months I used my GX85 and found its size and USB charging to be useful so far beyond what I'd anticipated and found observing my scene more thoroughly and using zebras to be quite good for nailing exposure. Got the a7s III last year for the low light, af and 4k120P and it is truly in another league. My favourite lens on the GX85 is the Oly 17mm f/1.8, I now have the Samyang 35mm f/1.8 (for about $400USD) which is only marginally bigger/heavier than the Oly. Kinda touched on it I think, but the GH5 also has a 1.4 tele 4k mode which loses no discernable image quality that can be mapped to a custom button, effectively giving all your primes two focal lengths. The other is syncroscan which you did cover, not seen this in any other hybrid camera. Extremely worthwhile if you shoot inside with dodgy lighting you have no control over. I'd have another GH5 in a second, though never over the a7s III given the choice.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    Thanks for the real-world experience perspective. It’s true I didn’t mention the tele 4K really - I also didn’t mention the C4K. So many things to talk about!! But the A7S3 is a much better camera practically speaking for most people. This video is just to highlight a few of those video centric functions that some people might really appreciate, but it sounds like you know that already. The GX85 is also awesome.

    I recently traded in my GH5S for an a7S iii and, on the whole, I don’t miss it - the autofocus and colors got to me in the end (and yes, I think the Sony colors are way better, especially S-Cinetone). However one thing that caught me out that you didn’t mention is that the GH5S mic in is switchable between mic and line level whereas the a7S iii is not (along with most cameras). I didn’t realize how useful that was until I plugged my Rodecaster Pro in and got horrible buzzing (even at really low output levels from the Rodecaster). I need to run the audio through the camera to maintain A/V sync as that then goes into the computer via the Camlink 4k for live online work. I initially couldn’t work it out but then I realized the audio in signal was too hot for the camera’s preamps. So I’ve had to buy an attenuation cable to fit between the Rodecaster and the a7Siii) - something I got for free from the GH5S.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    This is great info on the GH5S - but I only talked about the GH5, which can’t accept a line in like the GH5S. So, in your case, you probably wouldn’t prefer the GH5 for any reason!! The A7S3 is amazing - glad you’re enjoying it.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    Thanks!! If you are happy with your GH4, you will be very happy with the GH5. The A7SIII is excellent - and I'm sure you'd be happy with that as well (once you learn the camera the way you did with your GH4). People are getting great images out of it and the autofocus will make many situations so much easier. I may end with one myself eventually, but I'll be keeping my GH5 likely no matter what. I find Panasonic much easier to use than the Sony's (with the exception of autofocus of course). My sigma 1.4 is a straight micro 4/3 mount. 1) On paper, its great having waveform and vector scopes in the camera. But there too small to use reliably. 2) Just because it can use Anthropomorphic, does mean most people can afford that. Those that can, wont be using a GH5. 3) OK, this is kinda cool if you use it. I'm surprised other cameras don't do this. 4) I think a solid AF will be better. This is just something we can use to make due with having bad AF. 5) Shutter Angle is convenient, but I'm sure most people can make due without it. 6) Trying to nit pick here, its a nice feature, but if your using a monitor and its good, you can do it there too. Bonus OK, the App is very good! The main reason I would recommend the GH5 for film making is its the best learning camera for the dollar. If your a 'pro', the GH5 is not quite enough camera these days. But if your just getting into it, everything the GH5 is, and is not, makes it the best tool to help learn the ups and downs of film making. I adore my GH5, but I'd have a hard time justifying buying another one. Yet if someone were to ask me what a good starter camera is, I can't think of a better camera out there.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    3 жыл бұрын

    I do agree that it is an amazing learning camera which can get you excellent footage as you gain experience. But I do know people who rent anamorphic lenses to shoot on the GH5. It’s a great way to do anamorphic if you’re on a budget or if you want to get your feet wet in the anamorphic world. The shutter angle has been great for me, as I stated, because some places I go I need to fine tune it to get rid of flicker. I know the A7S3 has an anti flicker function, but I like having control over the angle. I think the vector scope is probably too small to use, but I have used the waveform with success. But, yes, if you’re doing bigger projects, there are a lot of great options for pros. Even for me, if I ever step up to more cinema style cameras, I will be very glad of my GH5 experience. Thanks for your detailed comment!!

    Traded in my gh5 for the a7siii a couple of months back. Gh5 is a great camera but not in the same league as the A7siii, sorry to say. Image, colors autofocus, depth of field, raw, 120 4k...the gh5 may have better usablitly but when it came to nailing focus on moving subjects the gh5 was just terrible. Miss the stablisation for sure, but that is it. But if you go for the sony you better have a pc that can handle it. I see people buying the A7siii and just using the 8bit, or not just the 60p, as either thier computer won't cope or they won't buy a card fast enough to record. If that is you then stay away from the A7siii, grab the A7c or stick with a GH5(s) - I Shot canon for a over a decade, then Panasionic, now Sony. Don't be loyal to a brand, be loyal to Image quality, and to a setup that works for you.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think this is spot on. The A7S III with that autofocus, 120 4K, raw output, and being a full frame is going to yield you better results almost certainly. But it costs a lot more and for my workflow, and for others I’m assuming, the GH5 has some features I would miss like the scopes, and the usability (and 6k anamorphic). Obviously you can get an external monitor for the A7S III, but this is an added cost and bulk. The point of my video is that there are still some advantages the GH5 might have for some workflows. But if you have the budget, and add an external recorder especially - the A7S III is the way to go every time if, like you said, you can utilize all those powerful features.

    That is a tough one!! If doing video only - the Blackmagic beats the GH5 in some ways, but it doesn’t have the flip screen or the fantastic stabilization. Plus, it has terrible battery life, so you need to rig it up to external batteries (and an SSD while you’re at it). But I love the image coming out of the Blackmagic so much. Can’t go wrong with either - but the GH5 is more versatile, more compact (compared to a rig), plus it takes good photos. Hey dude, I used to film standup in Chicago. I know that venues can vary in regards to quality of their lighting. I used to try and solve that myself by using fast glass, but my work got better when I was able to work with the venue to adjust their lighting accordingly. For years I used a 28-75 f2.8 Tamron zoom on a T3i, but I adjusted the lighting so I could stop down my lens and not worry about a performer drifting in and out of focus. For the Gh5 the Olympus 12-40 2.8 has served me well. I also invested in the Panasonic XLR module which has streamlined my workflow when I can tap into a soundboard. I used to record the room sound with the stereo mics on my H4N. Now I would plug a shotgun mic into the second channel on my XLR module and mix the two in post. In terms of camera placement, I tried to always get a straight on shot where we can see the performers whole body.

It’s a great camera now and it will still be a great camera for the next few years. It’s currently much cheaper than it was when it came out. You can get it now for $1300. It was once $2000. Plus, sometimes when the new version comes out, the old one is not necessarily priced reduced much further. Panasonic still sell a lot of their older cameras for a fairly high price. You can get great results from the GH4 (especially with an external recorder). If you don’t want to spend a lot, the GH4 can be a good option, but if it’s within the budget - the GH5 can’t be beat.

    6 reasons why you should buy a camera over b camera but I own both cameras. I think the Luts Scopes and shutter angle are real reason. Though the tracking and zoom really become one and aren't for everyone. Personally I'd like to capture the shot and crop and move in post as there is more flexibility and you can still do that on the A7S3. Anamorphic is also a very subjective thing and most people at these price points won't need or want it. Though people looking at these cameras I would say they care about low light and reliable AF. Class leading DR (though everyone will use S-cinetone) and a fantastic viewfinder. Though the GH5s is good it isn't as good as the A7S also isn't Log a paid for upgrade with the GH5? I doubt many will care about Gain DB these days unless they're older than 38 and even then probably not many. ISO is more intuitive after all. So certainly 3 great reason I feel the others are more subjective and work for you, though you bought an A7S3, why if the GH5 is so great? It's a well made video and the information is well presented. So keep up the work I just think many will still see the advantages of the A7 compared to the GH5

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    3 жыл бұрын

    Fair point on the VLog - I should have mentioned that will cost you another $100. But I made it clear, I thought, at the end of the video that the A7S3 is an amazing camera that holds many advantages over the GH5, but this is a video about how people might be surprised at the functions in the GH5. Some of these are certainly subjective like the 4K live crop (as you say you have more flexibility in list - I just prefer to get it in camera). Some people in the comments were a big fan of the 4K live crop. I personally think anamorphic is a big deal. You can get 6K anamorphic natively - with stability. For people who shoot anamorphic that is amazing. I bought an A7iii before I got the GH5, actually. I wanted it as my main phot camera with the ability to shoot video. But with the lack of flip screen and menu system and 8-bit, I found the video features difficult to use. So I picked up the GH5 and now shooting video is much easier. I think the A7S3 might be the best camera ever released and, depending on the project, I may get one, but this video is highlighting some things that people may not be aware of. And if the workflow works for you - it is much more cost effective!!

  • @heartshapedfilms

    @heartshapedfilms

    @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Oh this is my Bad as I thought you actually said "Focus A7S3" so I thought you had that camera not the a73. I am sure some people are happy with the 4k zoom feature, though I do see it as a subjective point of view and anamorphic is great especially in 6K. Though for most people they're not gonna need it. its cool, its a headline feature. Though some one buying this camera will probably buy the siru 1.33 lenses which as you state shouldn't be used for the 6k mode and the lenses for that do can cost 10s of thousands of dollars. So I think it is cool and a big deal that its in this camera but I think its very subjective for the users. Obviously the A7s3 is an amazing camera, the best? certainly for some. The point your making on bang for buck is great. and there are some incredible cameras out on the market now that make incredible savings for thousands of people easily. I picked up a fuji X-T1 for £200 and a XF35mm f2 for £260 a great camera combo and fantastic results. it has its down falls for sure. though very pleased with it. Maybe I am being too critical. I can set up a three camera GH5 shoot for the price basically of an A7S3. But the future doesn’t look bright for micro 4/3 - so, the GH5 (and the tiny upgrade of GH5ii) might be is as good as it gets. So, it’s true - when you look to the future, there’s something to be said for putting your money into something like a Sony or Canon. Question from a newbie: I want to create close up videos of birds eating seed off the deck in my backyard very similar to this example ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/inimpJecZJDJabw.html ). I want to run the video camera for very long periods of time so it must resist overheating so that is why I am considering a Panasonic GH5ii but I am concerned about Panasonic's autofocus. Do you think this type of video could be created with manual focus ? Do you think the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5ii is good enough for this type of video ? ( If you think there is a better camera or camcorder option than the Panasonic GH5ii I would be grateful for any advice. I know the Sony A7Siii is also a good option but it is pretty expensive. ) Thank you for your help. PS - I would really be grateful for any advice you can give on this topic.

  • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    2 жыл бұрын

    So, yes, you can create this shot with the Panasonic GH5. I would not get the GH5ii for this because the GH5 will do it just as well and much cheaper. Manual focus would actually be best and it is what they are using in this video. what you do is you lay down the bird seed and you focus on that. if you leave this on autofocus (even with something like the A7S3) the camera will shift focus all the time when the bird flies in and out of frame or even when it moves around a bit. So I would buy the GH5 for this. You could also consider a camcorder like the Sony ax53, that will record for a long period of time without overheating, but it doesn’t not have weather sealing. I would still use manual focus even with the camcorder in this situation

    @@newlifeeveryday1821 You don’t really need one. If you were outside in the sunshine, and you wanted a blurry background behind an actor, then you’d need an ND filter. What I would suggest is to set you camera up, if you’re in North America, shoot in 24 fps and choose Shutter Priority (s Mode) 1/50. Let the camera do the work. Learning cameras takes a bit of work - so you can also try some of the auto modes on the Panasonic and see if they work for you.
