I haven't spoken much Urdu in the past few months so I wanted to see what happens to language progress when we stop learning. Do we forget everything entirely? To help me, I called up my friend Arooj. Arooj was my teacher when I learnt Urdu to surprise my mum. So let's see what happens and if I can make any progress in a week!

haha, thank you! It was a lot of fun, and it made me work towards a goal. I have a vivid memory walking down my street at least 2/3 months before I surprised her and thinking 'I'm so happy and excited to be alive because I have the look on her face to look forward to'. It's like that quote- 'something to do, someone to love, something to look forward to'

awh thanks so much! I really appreciate this - are you learning any languages? :)
I'm currently learning Japanese. It has been a real struggle to stay motivated being a bit ADHD. I always get bored easily, easily distracted, always looking for something new. It gets to the point where my lessons almost become a chore. I'm currently using Michel Thomas and Pimsleur the most. I also have a lot of different apps on my phone like Memrise, Rocket Languages, LingoDeer, but I find the phone apps don't do much. Did you ever hit this brick wall? You seem like you were very motivated, maybe because you had a goal, your Japanese to speak to your friend and Urdu to speak with your mother. Anyway, another good video, thanks. What are you next language goals?
@jannahhossain4321
10 ай бұрын
hmmm... interesting. so i don't have a phone and have never used apps. someone else with ADHD commented on another video saying she thought the audio method i explained would help for people like her. it's called conversational in 6 months. And i completely get the brick wall. with japanese - i got to conversational fluency and then kept learning and felt 0 progression. Talking to people more versed in language learning, i understand this is because the initial learning curve is very steep but then plateaus. so in the beginning you feel really fast progression and then quickly it slows down. the only language i want to push past that plateau in is arabic and i think the best way is to start reading. to find books, podcast, videos etc. that make you reach for them just like you would for a tv remote. i 100% agree with the goal idea, we have to have something we work towards, otherwise there's nothing to motivate us!
