Although not obvious at the time, there is a lot of well remembered events here in 11 minutes. Winter Of Discontent,Guadeloupe Summit and of course a few days later Jim Callaghan's famous interview when arriving back the UK. Iranian Revoluton and Ian Botham was made captain after this series.

16 days after I was born. You wouldn't guess the newsreader was only 48 years old at the time.

In order for these old clips to be truly authentic I'll need to watch them in black & white. We never had a colour TV until well into the 80's. . .

The BBC was not long back on the air after the December 1978 strike. Martin Bell, of course, was later MP for Tatton. (Independent)

The full spectrum of the british public (white ,british chinese, british pakistani) all seem so polite during the january sales rush at harrods scenes from 1979.it seems like a game of chess compared to the scenes these days at "black" friday in wembley .sure evidence of how society is less polite

+nugent milicent "The full spectrum of the British public" makes it sound like Chinese and Pakistanis were a significant component of British demographics in 1979, when in fact they were less than 1%. The people you are talking about were economic tourists for whom the Harrods sales was an event for many years.

its a london sale and as the video shows there are a fair few ethnic minority brits in attendance.....perhaps because there are mostly Londoners in attendance . And i think youll find the ethnic minority brit population of london at the time was a little more than 1 percent overall and a lot more in certain areas of london.either way i think you miss the point ...i said general socirety back than at sales seemed more polite back than than now. U dont have any proof they are all economic tourists...beleive it or not i was born in croydon in 1927 i have a fair inkling of the time

The ethnic population of London in 1979 would have been about 10%, but most of them tended to stay in the areas they lived.

Great stuff, though not that different today. People complaining about petrol prices, the England cricket team faltering and 'Black Friday' chaos at Harrods
