6 Incredible Race Cars Which Got BANNED

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Often when engineers get creative in racing and come up with a cool idea never seen before, the praise they receive is a ban of such a feature. Some were very sophisticated, some only followed largely holes in rulebooks.

Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R. It upset the Australian touring car establishment so much that it led to the Australian Touring Car Championship being split into two: a category that was similar to BTCC (maximum 2 litres) and V8 Supercars, neither of which the GT-R was eligible to race in. Funny that.

There are, to be fair, reasons to do this. The main reason they do this is to prevent any one car or company from dominating the races for too long. This is a self-preservation measure. If you always know who is going to win, nobody is going to watch your race. If nobody watches your races, your entire racing series loses money and goes bankrupt. Nailbiter races attract fans, and that means enforcing close mechanical matches between competitors roughly even. Also, race authorities don't want to see tech avalanches that see every car in a given series adopting tech that becomes either dangerous or boring when taken to its logical extreme, so if a given tech is seen to result in that, they nip it before it can.

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Group A - banned after dominating touring tracks all over the world. Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 Group A - best Group A specifications car ever devised - dominated everything it participated - until banned 2 years after it appeared (some formats banned it the same year when it appeared). And obviously all Group B rally monsters when they got out of control and started closing to 1k bhp output. Actually, sorry to burst this bubble. It's a very common myth, but a myth. The reason the spoiler was there was to get it into clean air, as confirmed by the engineers who worked on the design of the aero package. The trunk opening fully is just a happy coincidence. The rules for that year didn't even say the trunk had to open fully, nor did the trunk ever come up in discussions when designing the car. The strangest banned race car that I've read about (but can't find right now) was a super-weird Modified that the builder even tested at Indy. While his car had four wheels (as per the rules), THREE of them were on the outside (i.e. right side) of the car and just one on the inside (i.e. left side). The car even showed a lot of promise as it allowed cornering at much higher speeds but they never even got the chance to work out all the kinks, let alone race it as the concept was promptly banned.

Tyrrell P34 - NOT BANNED! It raced for 2 seasons ('76-77), only stopping development due to the tire manufacturer not being willing to develop the tires. The 1983 FIA rule limiting F1 cars to 4 wheels had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the P34. BMW M3 GTR - NOT BANNED! A sneaky sidestepping of the rules (for a production car category), that led to the rules being tightened up. With the tighter rules, the car was ineligible for the series it was designed for. Still won the 2001 championship though. Chaparral 2J - NOT BANNED! It ran the whole of the 1970 Can-Am series, before a rule change rendered it ineligible. Dodge Daytona & Plymouth Superbird - NOT BANNED! Can you list a pair of cars as being banned, when it wasn't those cars specifically that were affected by a rule change? ALL the aero-NASCAR's were outlawed (for entirely sensible reasons) via technical rule changes. Porsche 917/30 - NOT BANNED! Raced & won the championship in 1973. Technical rule changes made the car uncompetitive in 1974, so Porsche/Penske withdrew from the series AFTER competing in the first race of the 1974 series. I think the problem with these "BANNED!" lists, is that you are confusing a car being thrown out of a championship (Banned!), with a car being rendered uncompetitive/ineligible for a series due to rule changes. If a car is allowed to compete in a racing series for a full season while exploiting a loophole in the rules, only for that specific loophole to be written out of the following year's rulebook, well, that's racing. You might as well produce an annual video series of BANNED! cars, consisting of the previous year's entire F1 grid. None of which were thrown out of the championship, but they are all ineligible for the current championship due to rule changes. Which leads me to... T-REX. BANNED!!! The only car in the entire video which was ACTUALLY BANNED! The car complied with the NASCAR technical rules at the start of the race. After the race, Ray Evernham (the team manager) was called into the NASCAR hauler & told not to bring it back. When he protested that the car was fully within the rules as they stood, he was told "It won't be tomorrow". THAT is a true banning - none of this "they changed the rules for the following year" bull... Oh, and as a p.s - Brabham BT46B "Fan Car". NOT BANNED! The FIA ruled that the car was eligible for the whole season. The team (Owner Mr. B. Ecclestone) WITHDREW the car "for the good of the sport". Bernie trying to get the F1 Constructors Association up & running may have had something to do with it...

It was mostly a publicly/marketing decision to run the estate though.

Australian V8 Supercars category exist because the Nissan Skyline GTR handed Aussie V8 sedans their own arse in early 90's Australian Group A racing. Instead of Australian manufacturers coming up with an answer to Nissan, they lobbied to have turbos, all-wheel drive, 4 wheel steer etc. banned. Hey Visio, I think a bloke like you who thinks like me (I think) when it comes to sound and audio... You must surely have wondered about the timbre of engines and their layout. My favourite engine noises are V8 (cross-plane) V10, and my Honda CBR600RR above 10,000 rpm. But have you ever noticed the same timbre can be achieved with half the cylinders? I had a four cylinder bike with cross-plane crank (Honda VFR) that sounded like an old Aussie/American V8 muscle car. My brother's 5 cylinder Volvo sounds like a Gallardo, most V12's sound like an inline 6, some 3 cylinder bikes (Yamaha MT-09 for example) can sound like a racey V6 with the right exhaust. And flat-planed crank V8s (like Ferrari, Lotus, Repco) that sound like every 4 cylinder superbike I've owned. I've noticed this but have yet to see a video on the subject.

I remembered reading about a 6 wheeled postwar Indy car so I looked it back up. Indeed, there was. The "Pat Clancy Special" was a six wheeled car that raced at Indianapolis in 1948, finishing 12th. According to the article (link at the end), the rear axle setup was much like a semi truck, with two driven axles connected by a prop shaft. The car was powered by a 270 cubic inch (4.4 liter) Offenhauser four cylinder making 275 hp, standard fare for the time. Pat Clancy ran a trucking business and noted that the big trucks could navigate the tight mountain lanes faster when they had more wheels, thus the thinking behind this vehicle. It was soon converted to a four wheeled race car as the concept didn't work as well as hoped. There was also a massive eight wheeled land speed record car called the Thunderbolt. Driven by Captain George Eyston of Great Britain, his beast had a dual rear wheel axle and two single wheel steered axles at the front and was powered by two Rolls Royce R Type V-12 aircraft engines, each making 2350 hp out of 36.5 liters displacement. In addition, the inside tires ran on a narrower track from the outer tires, meaning that all four tires ran on a clean surface, without wheel ruts. Thunderbolt weighed in at 7 tons and set several world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, it's fastest run being 357.50 mph (575.34 km/h). The record stood for about a year. Sadly, the car is thought lost in a fire. I included it because it's a multi-wheel leviathan and eight wheels is two more than six.
