0:00 - Intro
Musician & songwriter Ayla Tesler-Mabe shares her six favorite Hendrix chords in-depth, including different variations and root movements.
0:42 - E7#9
A classic Hendrix chord is found in songs like "Purple Haze."
2:33 - A Major
A new take on an otherwise known classic A major chord.
4:28 - G# m7
Ayla describes this chord as a chord that "defines the sound of the 60's". A beautiful chord that's in songs like "Angel."
7:12 - Asus2
This is a great chord to add more color and flavor to a regular open A major chord.
8:28 - A7sus2
A cool way to play a dominant 7 sus 2 chord where you can move it up and down the fretboard (almost) chromatically.
10:15 - A/C#
This last chord appears in songs like "Wait Until Tomorrow," specifically in the intro. The chord sounds great with hammer-ons and moved two frets down.
About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first KZread video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

Hey do Pail gap the greatest Jimi song ever
Thank you for being so verbally descriptive and how you formed those cords. As a blind person that really makes a difference when people describe what they’re doing. Awesome job!

Hi amazing lesson. Those are some great chords. I wrote them all down. Your a great player of Hendrix. If he were here I think he might say, dial back the reverb. Just a bit. Dont saturate your beautiful playing with effects. Use them "conservatively." Thanx for the lesson!

How much Jimi taught us at only age 27. I feel a little empty every time thinking how much more we could have seen from him! Great lesson.

I think about this all the time, he was a mad scientist in the guitar and music world. Jonny Greenwood, Dimebag Darrell, SRV, and EVH were and have been extremely groundbreaking and inventive to technique and sound, but nobody changed as much as Jimi, and that was without much in effects and recording technology. Jonny (and Radiohead in general) is the only one who really comes close.

@@davidclark625 Absolutely. Most of my favorites were influenced by him, what would they be without? And I think it's easy now for us to forget how much genius went into innovation back then, with no Internet. You essentially did need to think it up originally.

I've been playing guitar over 60 years and I can't tell you how much I love your videos. It's a pleasure watching a guitar player doing instructional video that doesn't start off looking like an audition! Kudos to you!
Thanks . It's good to see young people acknowledge Jimi. I first heard of him on a bus to my tenth grade class. I picked up the guitar at that point and never took formal lessons. You are great on guitar. I think Hendrix would be honored that you have such an appreciation for his playing. I love what you are doing. I was in tenth grade in 1971.

Love your videos! I'm a Hendrix fan too! The first live concert I ever went to was Jimi Hendrix in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1968! It was mind blowing! Now, many years later, I'm retired and I'm learning guitar and having a blast with your videos!

... who's never bought anything from the JH brand product range. Its Obvious you're deaf and blind cause not 1 jimi hendrix brand item was used during the making of this video. You've been reported for misleading information comment.
What a clear and excellent lesson. Thanks for such much dedication to your detail and knowledge on explaining all the chords. God bless your career and dedication to the instrument.
15 years old, Hendrix gets his first guitar. 21 yo, discharged from the Army, plays guitar for Isley Brothers and Little Richard (has only been playing for SIX YEARS). 24 years old. Top of the UK charts for 'Hey Joe', 'Purple Haze', 'The Wind Cries Mary' (Only playing for 9 years). 27 year old, dead. (Only playing for 12 years)
What I most liked was the theory behind. It's amazing to know not only how but also why.
I like how you give a clear explanation of each chord and a quick example of the tune it is from along with the breakdown of the components. Your approach is good for multiple levels of guitar players and I enjoy your channel...guess it is finally time to subscribe !!!
For the first time ever --I can now embellish this A major chord --tried for 20 yrs ---thankyou so much --(on screen diagrams are AMAZING !)
You are a joy to watch, enjoyed every second,..and I have to admit I picked up pretty use full stuff from your video, thanks a lot. Cheers mike
Thanks. Good work. Saw Jimi,s last concert. He was amazing.
I don’t even play guitar but I loved this video. What a talented and genuinely lovely person.
Great illustration!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ayla, very useful piece of info!-love the energy too, you make me want to pick the guitar right now!
This is a great lesson and such a clear description of these chords. But the best part of this is at 09:50 Always move your body to the beat. It makes a huge difference to the vibe you put out when you play. Hear the drums iny our mind and play to them. Always play to the mind drums!
You're an honorable player, Ayla. Thanks for doing what you do. You're absolutely phenomenal, and so humble, and very appreciated.
I love the way you play Since I've Been Loving You! It's amazing! ♥
Great teacher ,I subscribed! Luv Hendrix !

Thanks. Wow! You make it seem so easy. Your hard work and studies really paid off.

Great lesson, TY!
Tks tks tks, your video was sooo usefull and right after this msg i ll grab my guitar and practice. By the way i am 63 and jimi s music runs in my veins since i was 12. You re lovely tks
Ayla is such a gifted instructor. As an advanced beginner (oxymoron) she has some very basic lessons for my ability and this, what I’d categorize as advanced. She’s so patient sounding which translates to “encouraging” for me, personally
You’re a great teacher. Appreciate all the helpful info! (cool personality too😎)
Thank you for this video! Good demonstrations!
so cool, thank you!
Great video. I also love Jimi and was lucky enough to see him twice before he left us. I'd love to be able to play those chords like you. Being a bass player most of my life, 6 strings is another world! I'll keep practicing and you keep posting vids. Thanks!
Thank you, Ms.Ayla Tesler-Mabe for a exlant lesson on Jimi. I'v been playing for years. I must say your a good instructor. Up and coming guitarist need good teachers and guitar players like you to pass the toarch on to others just learning to play. Thank you again.

Thanks, nice , clear, good stuff.
Nice lesson Ayla! The G#m7 is part of a progression from E to F#m to G#m (where you can also go up to A) used in “Sweet Melissa”, in Chicago’s music, and many more
Some great must know info for all guitar enthusiast 🤩
blew my mind you are very talented and a great teacher keep up the good work
Stuff I already knew but didn't know the theory behind it. Thank you, I'll be watching this again in the morning when I'm awake!

Like you, I am a Jimi Hendrix devotee. An illuminating video. Thank You. As for the chord so many guitarists associate with Jimi, you probably know that George Harrison used a D7#9 on his brilliant "Taxman" .
Great job teaching these leasons, I love it
thanks a lot !! i was searching for how the chords work sound in purple haze! you played them cool ! plus vibrato in that Jimmy E. thing
This is amazing!
I just subscribed...you are a good teacher...your right hand technique when u let loose is nice...plus your vibe is as cool af 😎
Thank you for sharing these videos and no ads I appreciate it. I like to learn all different kinds of music and try to incorporate it into one of my songs somehow but I need to get with it again it's a giant stress reliever music can heal your soul. Personally the best musicians I know where I live they don't play this song exactly they always change something and they do it on purpose to give it a little of their own personality. I don't think anybody plays the song exactly the same every time do they? The best musicians where I live they have good days and bad days also but if you didn't know music you'd never noticed they missed a note or two or something they just keep going and that's really hard to do
I love the open mindedness in yours language.. Thank you for acknowledging the rules and acknowledging that it's fine if a writer wants to bend or break them.. that was always something I appreciate it about music and it's rules is that the rules are not 100% rigid and they could always be accepted as flexible.. maybe that's why I loved music so much and the more I learned about it and learn to play as a teenager it became so much a part of me and my life because I didn't like how many things in the world were not so flexible and it was one thing that always was and will be for me and that is music and arts..
Very inspiring lesson, thank,you.
You're normally already a very good teacher, but it's impressive how more confident and motivated you teach when it's about Hendrix 🤩

I gotta brag again. I saw Jimi play in Oakland in 1969, he opened with "Fire" & closed with Voodoo Chile, what a show, if I remember correctly, tickets were 4.50 where I sat, I wanna go back in time! Yea, I'm an old guy. Rock on. Thanks for the lesson.
Really enjoyed this, go girl go..
