Back in the 70s , "Band of Gypsies" was a record I listened to hundreds of times.
It is an absolute masterpiece of blues / rock improvisational soloing and rhythm.
In this new KZread video I break down the chain of six blues licks that begin the song Power to Love.

He said what followed the intro was 60 plus seconds of the most explosive and intense guitar playing he has ever heard. This man knows music and musicianship and for him to say that is a testament in regards to how good Hendrix was with a guitar. He was not alone as all the musical greats during the time of Hendrix said the same thing in different ways. Hendrix was a cut or should I say several cuts above of his contemporaries. Even today he is still considered as the best guitarist ever. That’s one hell of a compliment.

Wrote, sang and performed, too... His own multi-verse of music and showmanship. Untouchable to this day.

I would not say Hendrix was good, that term is reserved for beings from planet earth. He was from a different solar system.
Finally !!! A comment on this song which has been engraved on my mind for 45 years, just like the important originals from JH, Love or Confusion, Stone Free, Up from the Skies, and third stone from the sun ... I am of course also a guitarist. Only guitar players can react to the incredible stuff produces by the Master !!!
"With the power....of SOUL....anything is possibllllllllle!!!!" Thanks for the awesome Hendrix lesson!
Sir, I say that with utmost respect, I am a 70 year old retired Muzo living in South Africa, I wake each day with my old strat and enjoy playing listening & copying you, never had so much fun, drive my grandkids crazy, wish the hell u were doing this 40 years ago, thanks for the music, kind regards martin.
That intro is the best ever. Goes right through you it's incredible. So heavy!!!!
Always a good day when Tim Pierce puts up a video! Even better when he's playing Hendrix!!

By the way when I was a kid that first note where Hendrix hits the wah we called ‘the note from God’! Still gives me chills to this day!!

There's nothing like bending a note while opening up the wah and a strat tuned down to E flat.

Yes Finn, agreed 100%!! Masterful stuff! You can hear the Hendrix influence in Tim's playing, that fluidity! Amazing!

Hi 001mcampbell agreed 100% with both of those comments my friend!!
When Hendrix's solo comes in on this, it's just awe inspiring. The greatest face melting solo of all time. Great tutorial, Tim.
Also one of the Hendrix songs that when I’ve heard for the first time, got me so hooked 😮😅 He is the GOAT
This is the wildest intro ever imo, makes me happy every time I hear it.
If you have a vinyl copy of Band Of Gypsy's in good condition and a system with turntable, put it on. Turn it up. Loud. It sounds like they are in the room with you. The recording of this album is one of the best I have ever heard. Clean and very present, just outstanding. Jimi at his best, pure playing with no stage antics. I agree with you, Tim. A really, really important album. Part of the magic is the rhythm section of Billy Cox & Buddy Miles. It was the black r&b feel Hendrix was searching for and the grooves just allowed him to play without worrying about anything else. Groove, the most important aspect of any ensemble playing.

" Groove, the most important aspect of any ensemble playing.".............................................. Truer words were never spoken!
My favorite Hendrix album by a long shot.
This track is below the radar when Hendrix is celebrated. For me it sums up the essence of Jimi . It’s wild and beautiful - The Band of Gypsys album is the best . The Who Knows track , for me, is supreme . The Power to Love intro , featured here is outrageously brilliant 😀 You need good speakers , kind neighbours and a turned up bass volume .
One of the greatest, most powerful lead ins to a blues songs ever recorded, and was live.
Out of an incredible body of work, that is indeed one of Jimi's most explosive and exciting intros! There's a whole generation of guitarists, myself included, that were inspired by and grew up on Hendrix.

. . . and he did it all in a mere 27 years.
Tim, BOG is my favorite live Hendrix of them all. The whole album (CD) is intense especially this song, I still after all these years get goosebumps listening to it. I have the original copy of the LP I bought along with several others and a CD to listen to in my car - the whole album is magic and captures JH at his best live. If anyone asks me about Hendrix BOG is my first go to Thanks for all you do, never thought I might be able to play at least a small part of this song but now I can give it a go!
Absolutely fantastic. The anticipation I feel on that C7 is matched only by the pause before the solo in Reelin' in the Years.
You're goddamn right it's the most explosive guitarplaying! I could hear Buddy's "Whaaa!!" as if he stood next to me when you meantioned that. Fantastic musicianship. Btw, I would love videos of you talking about the structure and "theory" of these tracks. Especially this one, as I consider it to be one of the most unique tracks, even in Jimi's vast collection of masterpieces.
Man, today i recorded a song and i can tell your videos were so inspiring, i cant thank you enough for this content! Thanks Tim!!!:)
Thanx so much Tim for teaching us normal players in such detailed, accurate and understandable fashion. Priceless. Your playing is just so tasteful in every note and rhythm.
Not just a lesson but a brilliant analogy!
Thanks Tim , we all love you and your great videos.
Absolutely awesome. I won't pass up your next sale, whenever it is. You are the bomb. You like everything I do.
Dynamite - can't get too much of Hendrix. Thanks.
Many thanks Tim. Like you I listened to that record over and over and over... it's been awhile since I've listened to it. Hearing you play this, I immediately went to iTunes and picked up Power to Love :)
Love your Hendrix lessons! Thanks again for all you do Tim.
I've played this opening riff for years, always dug it.
HENDRIX ETERNALLY!
Excellent!!
I just had to listen to that intro over and over again for a bit, feel the fire !
Masterful playing. Thanks Tim
So happy you did this lesson. Very stoked to play this now
Thanks Tim. Great stuff you know the nuances so well.
I've had a pair of Hiwatts and a Sound City 50 Plus sitting among my pile of amps on the wall behind me for decades, seeing Tim's was always a very cool thing for me. I miss them in his set up....
Fantastic!
Bow to the master!! Thank you TP!!!
Excellent guitarist and teacher! Thanks for sharing Tim, this is awesome stuff.
I remember buying this album when it came out and the reception seemed muted by the public generally and crckets in particular, choosing to focus on the vibe between Miles and Hendrix. Guitarists that I knew thought it was the most influential album of their lives. Go finger.
Another way to look at that C7 chord is as a tritone substitution for the V7 chord. BTW, it's a lot easier to grab it with your thumb over the neck playing the 6th string a la Jimi. Thanks, Tim Pierce. You're awesome.
Thank you tim
Thanks for the great content Tim.Killer Hendrix playing.
Awesome Tim, really dig how you explain the small skills need to get it sounding authentic, cheers!
7:36 "it gets close to his tone I think" haha, so intimate and awesome Tim!
Hits home Tim! This album instructed me on how to insert melodic bass lines when guitar is busy and out front!
Outstanding.
Sir you are also among this guys. This playing is awesome. Hendrix was my idol in my youth. I m 60 + now. I think Band of Gypsies and Cry of Love were probably the best Jimi's albums and Red House from Hendrix in the West
Tim this is great .. pls play all of that crazy 60 seconds after the intro for us
Excellent lesson Tim. A favorite Hendrix tune of mine. Great job my start bro.
Great Lesson,Thank You
Oh man, Tim I knew you were an amazing guitarist, but this absolutely hammers it home! Thank you ... stellar lesson.
Tim! Never heard you f*ckin' WAIL like this before! New respect for you!
Tim there's a years worth of youtube lessons on Machine Gun by itself.
Beautiful explanation. I’m glad you acknowledged the solo after the into ending in the cord. The tension at the cord followed by a mind blowing solo. This solo is missing on some recordings. Best on the original Band of Gypsies Vinyl.
Love the riff in the first verse of this track
I remember glossing over Power of Love, ( not a guitar player but have own many guitars), pretty much ignoring side 2 of Band of Gypsys back in '72 & maybe 2 years later i was in a energetic patient 'zone'and revisited this jam....and i wanted it to go on forever.forgive me there was nothing i contribute back to you on a technical side.thnx i was totally engaged with what you share.
Thanks for the amazing video. For everybody like me who loves the band of gypsys album, i really suggest to listen to "Songs for groovy children" which the full 4 shows Hendrix played the first of january 1970, pure gold!
Awesome lesson Tim.
Thanks Tim, great choice 👍
Yes Sir!
Very cool Tim. I always thought Band of Gypsies was one of Hendrix'x best albums with adding that R&B feel to the Hendrix rock style. And of course, you picked one of the best guitar moments.
Sooo Goodddd !!!
very nice Tim and just as dynamic and organic as the original
Nice breakdown Tim!
thanks tim 4 the inparation , u nail it every time. a million thanks.🎸🤘

Didn´t know that song! (i know little about Jimi...) I woke up, so this video and I did my rendition the best I could in an hour! hahaha! Great video, great channel and killer tone!
Hey Tim, you’re really catching on! :-) Excellent! 👍👍✌🏼🎶🎶
Thanks again Tim, outstanding as always...I want your studio too :-)
Tim I have bog early puppet cover super guitar playing on it , you just made my day with your lesson thank you .
(super)awesome lesson man , thanks!
Thanks for this, Tim... this album was always one of my faves, too. It was a live performance that had better guitar performance than many studio recordings at the time, imho...
Wow this is nice
Genia!!!!!!!l 👍
Love your playing just subscribed
dope intro !!
Tim, was looking over your discography on All Music and thought you’d probably be a great guy to just talk records with. I think I here a coloration especially on old records that is part of what makes them special and lasting. Of course you cover more genres that I like, but I’d like you to do a show on essential recordings for hospitality, for example I have a little Beatles, country and pop just for guests to add to my prog-head collection when we have people over - but I’d like it to be great pop, like Rumors. I bet you know some jewels.
One of my favorite Gypsys tracks, thank you! How about Izabella next, from Live at the Fillmore East? It's one tight and funky track with some fiery playing!
My all-time favorite from Tim Pierce is him on a strat..
So looking forward to tomorrow’s Tone Talk with Tim Pierce.
The Crash Landing compilation album is near my favorite Hendrix album.
Tim is tops.
Jesus "H" Christ I have gotta get myself a Wah pedal! That bassline is righteous too. Love ya work Piercey!
It'd be really interesting if you'd analyse Hendrix's show-off/warm up song - KILLING FLOOR (as played live at Monterey)
Thanks so much for putting this up. I learned it from you yesterday. This is my favorite Hendrix song from my favorite Hendrix album. Would love to learn the rest of that version. Do you offer it in your master class?
Nice lesson, going home now to steal it all! lol
I wish I was a session player...seems damn fun
Oh the Fillmore East... What a venue! Please bring it back! One of my all-time favorite Hendrix tracks and albums. Tim, you could've almost included this in the lesson you did on the Holy Trinity (Beck, Clapton, Page) lick. Thanks for all the great lessons and cheers!
That was sort of Jimi's intro. the Power of Jimi 's Intro to this song....dayumm...its his power, his energy coming thru,it isnt just the notes' he's playing, its anger, its possibilites, its frustration its lightening coming thru, its one of THEE baddest ass intro to any song I've ever heard and the WAY he does it. I Love Frank Zappa,to Return to FOREVER,to Joni Mitchell,Stone Temple Pilots,Pearl jam, creed, ect mother's finest, Carlos Santana..,ect..... I've heard and seen tons of bad ass MthFker's Man.... Its Jimi's energy that took this song to "another place', he was definitely EXPERIENCED!! I could write a book, here, about it...suffice to say... Sing on Brother,Play on Drummer....
Sweet
Ok just set my guitar on fire. Don't need it anymore lol. Great job Mr. Pierce.
Some players just have the instincs and play like they're listening. TIm is one of those guys. Oh...and Jimi too.
The last Hendrix video you put up [overplaying/underplaying]had me working on it everyday for months...until I had to throw in the towel. Hope I can do better on this one :-)
fab settings on your guitar, sounds amazing, what pickups are you running ?
That’s what I want to do !!!!! I wanna rock just like that !!!!!
That cassette was mainstay in my car back in the day
My friends uncle was at the show. I bug him with questions all the time.
Jeez, that's the best video I've seen in a long time! Dang, you're awesome. I'd cuss but there might be kids around.
Tim your tone was so good here - what were you going into after the guitar?
Hey man great vid! Btw what guitar is that?
You sir are the undisputed champ of taking such complex riffs and taking them apart note by note so that fretboard simpletons such as myself can absorb it the first time watching. Hi Im Tim Pierce you too can melt peoples face off. Are you sick of sweep picking the same boring scales with zero melodic value and no soul in your moms basement day in and day out? Watch my FREE video and you too can melt face! Or atleast not suck anymore in my case. Ty sir!
👌🏼👌🏼
Your tone @ 1:18 is absolutely delicious!
