    Easy German is the best! Since I really want to learn primarily to speak a little German and understand conversational German, this is so helpful! I tried another learning program before my German friend pointed me to you and the real life experience of listening to people on the street, is invaluable. Your lessons are far superior to the other program too ( Babbel). Thank you so much- this is fun and easy to learn from. Cari you and Janusz and Manuel are terrific. 😊😊😊

    When you explain why people sometimes break the rule with 'weil', you do exactly the same :) You say: '... weil man ist ja noch dabei' (13:32). I thought this was very funny: you are the living proof of your own explanation. BTW We do exactly the same in Dutch: 'want' goes with Hauptsatz, 'omdat' with Nebensatz, but we sometimes mix this up because in our heads we are a step ahead (or behind).

  • @tgwnn

    @tgwnn

    I like that in Dutch you can officially put one more word after the infinitive. It gives me time to think and "breathe" in the sentence. For example: Ik kan helemaal niets doen morgen. (I can do absolutely nothing tomorrow) Actually "Ik kan helemaal niets morgen doen" sounds artificial. Well anyway "morgen kan ik ..." sounds the best. But I'm not a native speaker, just fluent. In German, that would be Ich kann überhaupt nichts machen morgen. I think this second sentence (or similar ones) are sometimes/often used by native German speakers when spoken, but it's not acceptable officially yet. Maybe this will change though.

    This is a little like how "words" like "gotta" (not an official word, but it's used in speech, and only in informal written text when you want to write as you would speak), which evolved out of "got to" - which almost no one says unless you're specifically emphasizing how important is that you do [whatever]. For example, "I've gotta go to the store" is what we would likely say, and would only say "I have got to go..." if you meant, "I have GOT to go..." I wish language classes emphasized real life speech and discussed these things the way you have in this video. In fact, I would love it if you did more of these videos... Breakdowns of real-life speech - this was awesome!! Danke schön!!

    Thank You! I'm a complete beginner in German and recently watched two movies in German which sounded nothing like the phrases I'm learning from A1 courses and now I finally know why. Thank You a million. Now I will have some idea what should have in mind while learning. I would like to see more videos on such oddities of spoken German. And could You please make something on dialect from Switzerland? Since youngest generation of my relatives got born there.They do learn general German at school as a foreign language, but in childhood their first language became the local dialect from Switzerland.And the result is that now it is very hard to communicate with these kids, even for their own parents who speak and learn general German. So all adults from my family, their own parents included, are trying to catch up with them. Especially given that kids are in the phase of exposure to several languages and sometimes need our support in order to not mix things up too much.

    Dieses Video war sehr hilfreich. Ich wünschte, dass ich diese Lektion in meinem Deutschunterricht hätte. Cari hat diese Beispiele hervorragend bearbeitet und präsentiert. Wir haben ähnliche Beispiele auf Englisch. Ich bin sicher, dass jede Sprache ähnliche Beispiele hat. For example, in English we might say “I’m goin’ to the store” rather than “I am going to the store.” In linguistics, this is called clipping. Another example of dropping the “g” is in the brand name Dunkin’ Donuts for Dunking Donuts. (Now just Dunkin’, which is a really stupid name.) Or we abbreviate conjunctions such as “and” in examples such as Rock ’n’ Roll, In-N-Out Burger, Bread ’n’ Breakfast (or BnB, now in Airbnb), or Bread ’n’ Butter. Or we abbreviate prepositions such as “in”, or whole words such as sync(hronization), as in the band NSYNC for “in synchronization”. Other examples of abbreviated words are auto(mobile), exam(ination), math(ematics), lab(oratory), vet(eran), doc(tor), (tele)phone, (re)fridge(rator), mani(cure), pedi(cure), merch(andise), mic(rophone), ad(vertisement), gas(oline), gym(nasium), memo(randum), pub(lic house), pop(ular music), clit(oris), (ro)bot, (para)chute, (cock)roach, (alli)gator, (turn)pike, and (in)flu(enza). German does this with Auto(mobil), Uni(versität), and Kino for Kinematograph (cinematography, from ancient greek κίνημα, kìnema "movement" and γράφειν, gràphein "to write").

    Hi Cari and Janusz, your videos are amazing, your viewing figures always bare that out. Congrats. Would it be possible to sometimes show complete sentences all at once on the screen. When i can visually see the word order difference along with the extra modal particles etc, I think it would help a learner to better comprehend German. Especially when there is relative and subordinate clauses in the sentence.

    Ich finde eure Videos total gut, Deutsch ist meine Muttersprache, aber es ist so Interessant zu analysieren was Kultur eigentlich ist. Ihr artikuliert und relativiert persönliche und definitive aussagen. Toll! Carina, sei nicht so schüchtern, ihr seid sooo toll! Deine Körperhaltung tut mir beim zusehen weh. Die Schultern so hoch, hast du nicht oft Nacken-, Rücken-, Kopfschmerzen? Das hast du nicht nötig! Sei stolz und stark, geistig, kulturell und körperlich. :) Liebe Grüße, weiter so!

    Two English usages, one that you mentioned: "You are coming with us, aren't you?" But also, "You are coming with us, right?" A very interesting video on some differences between written and spoken Deitsch.
