I had a 270wsm was my everything rifle since i got out of the military. When the 6.8 western came out i was super interested in it. I was looking into a new rifle at that time because i want something with more punch to go out west someday for elk. It took me 1.5 years after it came out to finally get ahold of a rifle in 6.8 western up here in ny. I got a xbolt in it and i love the rifle and the round. I wasn't able to make a havrvest with it yet. Great to shoot and i get 1/2 inch 3.shot groups at 100 yards with it.

I have never owned a .277 caliber rifle, simply because I had a 30/06 and a 300Winchester,but my brother did have a 270WSM and used it to take a very nice mule deer.At that time we was talking about different rounds to experiment with and he told me I should think about that round.I did but never bought one.But now I am looking for a good medium magnum and the 6.8 has caught my attention, and would like to get one.The only drawback for me,is the availability of components, particularly the brass. This round has not had the support or marketing as the PRC rounds, and I feel that eventually it will fade if other manufacturers don't make rifles, ammo,or brass for it.I am not particularly a fan of Winchester brass, but if that's all I can get, then so be it,but would like to see better manufacturers offer it.Bullet selection is ok,but good be better as well. This is a great round and deserves to thrive,as do all the new rounds do,they each bring something to the table. The old, established cartridges are great and obviously work. The old magnums work, but are highly inefficient, and the belts are not needed. So therefore,I say bring on all the new cartridges so we can experiment and play with all of them. There will be camps for each one, just as there are camps for the old cartridges. No one cartridge works for everybody,so I say the more the merrier.Personally,I'd like to own at least one quality rifle in each round.Whats the fun of just using one rifle and one round all the time.

This is one of the best reviews that I have seen on the 6.8 Western. Great video!!! My favorite rifle is a 270 and it has never let me down. I have never lost an animal and I have hunted for over 40 years. When I saw the 6.8 I was very interested in theis new cartridge. However, I decided that I need to investigate the other new cartridges and I am current reviewing and researching the 6.5 PRC, the 6.8 Western and the 7 PRC. I live in the west and have hunted mule deer, elk and antelope. I have killed more deer and elk with my 270 than any other cartridge, but I have also used a Rem 7 mm to kill elk. I am getting older and probably don't need another rifle, however I am very intrigued with the new bullet designs and what these 3 new cartridges have to offer. As I look at these new comer, I listing some of my other items that are important to me. I don't really like a lot of recoil. I would like to shoot long distinct, but I don't intend to hunt at long range. Probably wouldn't ever shootan animal at over 500 yards. I have always shot all of my animals under 400 yards and to me making an ethical kill is very important. If I can't make a good shot, then I am not taking the shot. I am feeling that Hornady will probably be more successful than Winchester in marketing this new cartridge and I don't want to buy a cartridge that dies in infancy. I feel like you made a great sale for the 6.8 and I appreciate all that you covered. Like a said earlier, great video. Thanks for sharing.

That's a pretty impressive difference in recoil between the 6.8 Western and the .300 WM/WSM cartridges. You say you shot the 6.8 out of your X-bolt Speed - did it come with the Recoil Hawg muzzle brake? Because if your experience with the .300s didn't include a comparable muzzle brake on those rifles, then the differences are kinda skewed. Not knocking your integrity or any of the cartridges mentioned - I actually want an X-bolt Max Long Range in either a .300 WSM or 6.8 Western - just wanted to know if your X-bolt has the Recoil Hawg on it, and if those .300s were equipped with a muzzle brake as well.

I have always liked the 277 caliber. Have owned several 270 rifles and they all shot good. Not competition groups but good hunting groups. Comparing the 6.8 and the 7PRC both are great calibers and hard hitters at long ranges. As for recoil, it can be tamed very easily with either a break or a can. Knowing that ammo for the 7 PRC is still not very available and the 6.8 though only by Winchester and Browning at this time is much more readily available I think I would opt for the 6.8. Have to say that I like both and would happily put both in my arsenal.

They chose an anemic round for 7mm rem mag. Choose a 168 grain nosler accubond and it definitely hangs with everything. Add to that ,riflemakers are now chambering the 7mm rem mag in 1&8 twist. It will now stabilize 175 to 190 grain bullets. All that being said, the6.8 western is a great round. It is more than good enough for big game. If I'm thinking for the future, it's the 7mm PRC for me. You should pick the 175 grain ELD X as a comparison. Once the PRC becomes established and federal, barnes, etc pick it up,it will supplant the 6.8 western. Imagine a 185 grain nosler accubond? How about a 168 grain barnes tipped triple shock?

The 7prc 160 cx load is a copper bullet, so velocities will be lower. With a standard lead core bullet the 7prc velocity with a 160g bullet is over 3150 ! ( the hornady reloading page has a 162 grain bullet going 3150 ). This is 180 +- fps faster than the 6.8 western.

@@Recruitcreative did I say anything about the bullet weight? I said similar style. That would be heavy for caliber and high ballistic coefficient. It's fairly easy to get bullets in the 210-215 grain range with a high BC to go about 3000fps. Run that against the 6.8 western and see what it does. Let's compare apples to apples instead of apples to oranges.

6.8 Western is an impressive cartridge. Sadly, the support in terms of components and ammo is very weak. Hornady will never make any bullets for their competitors and Winchester and Browning are not known for their quality of ammo. I love Browning rifles but they launched a great cartridge during shaky times with little support. It’s a shame as I think the 6.8 Western has a lot of potential. Hopefully it won’t be transferred to life support. Thanks

Sorry mate but your charts are not comparing apples to apples. You short changed the larger calibers by using lighter bullets (lower BC and less down range energy) to the 6.8 with the highest/heaviest bullets it can chamber. I just did a quick check of my favorite round the 280 AI using a 175 grain Nosler Accubond Long Range. Going strictly by Noslers load data and Hornady Ballistic Calculator it had exactly the same 500 yard drop and 5 more pounds of energy than the 6.8. If I had used 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm PRC ballistics the difference would have been even greater. And, if we had tested the 180 grain bullets in the 7 PRC we could have blown the doors off. Don't get me wrong as I'm really liking the ballistics of that 6.8 Western. It's just that you've skewed the test in favor of the 6.8 to make it look head and shoulders above the others and that simply isn't the case. It's very comparable to my 280 AI which is saying a lot. I think it will be a great deer/elk cartridge for western long range hunting. However, looking over the charts I'm not about to swap out the 280 AI any time soon. It just doesn't do anything i'm not already doing.
