I don’t know if you have had similar experiences with the 04.5-07 wide bowl design, but up here in alberta, literally ever single one of those engines with anything more than 100k miles on them have blow by issues or have been rebuilt. Probably has nothing to do with the fact that everyone and their dog throws the hot tune on their trucks and beats the piss out of them here. But either way I’d imagine the piston design is the reason for that. I knew the pistons were different. Didn’t know it was this in depth but I knew they were thinner between the bowl and ring seats, and I knew the injector stray patterns were a little different. This explanation confirms my suspicions I guess. Great job explaining

Probably the in-cylinder EGR sooting up everything. Pretty sure the QSB piston was used before the 04.5-07 and is still being used on off-road applications.

@@ThanksHero yes you’re right 04.5-07 we’re the only times it was used on road though. The 6.7’s still have in cylinder egr so I doubt that’s it. I think it’s a couple things. I think it’s the hot tune beatings and then I think a lot of people try to stretch out the life of their injectors. They leak down into the piston and then as the truck burns off that fuel every time you start the truck, it gets hot. Those qsb pistons just aren’t as resilient to heat as the isb pistons

Very cool to see what all goes into them and the options. I'm amazed you've only got 30 out there, but a unit like that I'm sure doesn't come cheap. However, making 1500 hp isn't going to be cheap. Appreciate the content and you sharing the knowledge. I especially liked the visual display with the differences for the piston bowl designs. Besides sled pulling, are there many fuel only arenas for this level of performance? I would imagine outside of that every thing else allows the use of giggle gas.
