    Just what I was looking for. Refurbishing a 1970 Bolens Roto Tiller. SOB still runs. Pull start doesn't always engage the crankshaft though. Glad to see a fellow West Virginian not afraid to tear things apart and find out how to repair them. Thanks Guitar Man.

    Intake gasket 27355 diaphragm kit 395021 Carb to tank gasket 272409 I find myself spelling gasket gasquet because I used to kayak near a town in the farthest north of coastal California you can get to. But, Its pronounced Gaskee . Sounds like a French California gold country word. Part numbers in the video description would have been cool. Good video, thumbs up. I have a bunch of these to work on, one says 206 cc on a troy built tiller, top priority.

    Remember, these things were designed for leaded gas. On mine, the jet for the needle valve was plugged solid, solid, like metal. Didn't even look a hole in the jet. Couldn't tell one used to be there. I tried poking a needle through it and nothing would clean it up. Finally I used a plumbers aceteline torch (B Tank) and that worked, along with a needle. Thing is, it got the brass so hot that it became soft and squished on the side I was holding the pliers on. Not so big a deal, I just heated it back up and quickly threaded it back into the side of the carb. Don't know if I'll ever get it out again, but it's working right now, anyway. Instead of taking the whole carb off, I just used my air compressor and blasted 180 Lbs of air into every little jet and hole I could find. I also dumped all the old gas and cleaned the tank with spirits. Left about 1/2 an once of spirits in the tank when I filled it back up with supreme unleaded gas. Worked really well. Thing runs like new, now.

    It might be from the gasket between the carb and tank, sometimes it can kind of spray up towards the carb. I've never had one leak at the choke though. I got a new igniton coil for mine and it sparks well now but when i sprayed the starting fluid down the carburettor throat i went to pull the rope a few times and occasionally a flame would come out of the muffler and then at other times white smoke came out the muffler so i have no clue why its not starting but i think that it needs new piston rings and a new head gasket.I also haven’t checked the compression because i dont have a compression tester.Its very frustrating for me and i have very little time to work on it because of school,I normally only work on it once or twice a month.

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    5 жыл бұрын

    If your talking about the 2 pickup tubes with the screens on the bottom? The long one pull fuel out of the tank, then the pump (diaphragm on the side) puts it in the little chamber under the carburetor then is drawn into the carb through the smaller pickup tube. so yeah, it is constantly pumping fuel through the long one. The part numbers are dependent on tank size. Thanks for Watching!!!

  • @steveandrews8301

    @steveandrews8301

    5 жыл бұрын

    "..then is drawn into the carb through the smaller pickup tube", you said. I don't understand. The smaller pickup tube is shorter, - how can it draw fuel into the carb if the tank is over half empty? I was thinking it might be an overflow tube / gas return line, I'm just guessing, though, Please explain a bit better; I want to understand this, too, - I have a carb on my tiller just like it, I'm trying to get to run. Thanks! And great video, and much needed!

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@steveandrews8301 I don't remember saying that, but I may have said it wrong, how these work is, the fuel pump draws fuel up through the long tube then pumps it out into the reservoir where the short tube goes in, the carb will draw gas in through the short tube out of the small reservoir. The reservoir has open sides so it is constantly being over filled and just spills over in the tank, works similar as a bowl on a float a type carburetor. If it didn't have the reservoir, like some of the early 2hp (and others) carbs didn't have, it makes them alot harder to start since it would have the pull the fuel up clear from the bottom of the tank. Hope this makes sense, and sorry about the confusion. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Thanks. On just about any small engine I set the adjustment to either 1.5 turns or 2 turns and that is usually close to what it should be, then just take small adjustments from there. Turn the screw in all the way till it bottoms out, just barely snug it, it won't take much to break or strip it, then back it out 1.5 turns and see what it does. But still wont start and run. The piece inside the screw with the spring wasnt plugged. How can I tell if the diaphragm is bad? It wasnt torn. Thanks

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sometimes the diaphragm will be stretched and won't pump correctly. A common problem on these is the small chamber where the shorter pickup tube goes in, will sometimes rust up and have pin holes. Its supposed to stay full of gas so it won't have to fill up the chamber first to start, after its running, shut it off, then remove the gas cap and look inside, if you see gas dripping down from it, then i'd say that is your problem. you can actually take these tanks apart at the seem and epoxy it on the inside, its a pain but can be done. also, if its running to lean these are hard to start as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for Watching!!!

    At 4:37 in, while looking down into the carb, between the female thread housing for the air breather and the pull out choke, in the bottom of the choke housing is a small pin like item, about an 1/8” in diameter. What is the purpose of that part? Mine leaks fuel when I pour directly into the carburetor base. Do I need to replace the entire carburetor?

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    4 жыл бұрын

    Its actually a rivet that holds the slide out choke in, if that is what your talking about. Its not really meant to seal, and they will also leak out of the vent tube on the side sometimes as well, especially if the rubber elbow is cracked. I wouldn't worry to much about it to be honest, these carburetors are really expensive, over a 100 dollars, and the cheap 15 dollar ones are for the new style tanks and won't work on these. These carbs are also bad about leaking between the carb and tank. Great carbs, just really picky at times! hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!

    Does it have good compression, the valves can stick or not seal and keep them from running if the compression is to low. Also, make sure the flywheel key did not shear, if its sheared then the spark timing can be out. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Your welcome! I hear ya, it would have been hard to show on video, but you have 2 throttle linkages, a real short one that goes from the throttle plate to a rocker arm type piece, then straight down to where the governor arm is at the bottom, it should be the last hole on the end, with another hole for the spring going to the part that throttle cable connects to. Next time I work on one (probably next summer) I will make a video on the linkages. I thought i showed it in one of my vids but i can't seem to find it! Thanks for Watching!!!

    Can anybody tell me if the "oil breather tube" is necessary for the engine to work properly. I'm currently working on a rototiller engine with a similar engine/carb. (Briggs 5 hp). I think it's a newer version though - it's the kind where it has the throttle and choke levers on a little 'control panel'. It is missing the oil breather tube, and when I checked an online parts catalog, they list the tube as "obsolete and unavailable". Mine still has the retainer clip for the tube under one of the carb-to-tank screws.A guy in another similar video about pulse-jet carbs casually mentioned that the port on the carb for the breather tube was plugged with silicone, but didn't say any more about it.

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    IT will run fine without it, it doesn't affect performance or power, its just a emission control and if any oil is pushed through it will spill on the ground instead of going through the engine and can let water in the oil. You should be able to find it on ebay. But yeah if you plug the whole on the carburetor it will run fine, if you don't plug it can suck dirt/water into the carb while running. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Its best to connect it to the bottom piece under the tank, so it will be governed, if you bypass the governor it will not hold up with the high rpm's. If you do it though... you will need some type of clamp and may have to make a bracket to anchor it to then connect the cable to where the linkage connects on the carburetor. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Greetings. I am trying to resolve problems with a very older style Briggs horizontal mower with a Pull Choke looks like the one in your video. It is installed on an old Ariens rotary hoe (a barn find). I have solved all the problems except it requires a spring for the governor (missing) plus I am not sure how to install a replacement (fixing points, one is obvious). The model details where it should show the model number ..says model number but there is NO model number (faded away?) Could you kindly tell me the model number of the engine in your excellent video please?. Your support would be most appreciated.

  • @fnaguitarplayer9

    @fnaguitarplayer9

    7 жыл бұрын

    The model number should start with 13 on the 5hp, you can usually go by that, (that represents displacement, 13 cubic inches) there wasn't a whole lot of changes on these, as long as it has the same carburetor setup its the same, there were changes on piston rings though. And you should be able to find parts on tulsa engine warehouse or off of ebay if you just need a few parts. You can upgrade these to electronic ignition for not much more than the cost of putting new points in, by buying a magnetron coil for it, buy one for a model 13 made around 1983. But i do have videos on replacing points and condensers and setting the gap. hope this helps, Thanks for Watching!!!

    1. Where can I get an air filter for this type of engine...? Mine was rotted and fell apart when I pulled it out of the housing, and I can't find a replacement for it anywhere. 2. I have a 5-hp B&S engine looks just like the one in the video except there is a spring that goes to the choke to adjust the choke as the engine warms up. The auto-choke kills the engine after it's warmed up, and I don't see how to adjust it anywhere at all. If I can grab the choke fast enough before it dies, barely pull on it ever so slightly, to open it just a hint, the engine will come right back to life, but after a minute or so, will try to die again, and I have to repeat the process to keep it running (if I can catch it in time). It would be a great engine if that choke didn't move in too far after it warmed up like it does. Any idea how to adjust one of these pull-type chokes with the spring that auto adjusts the air/fuel mixture while it runs...? I can't find any info on this anywhere, but it looks like the choke on the engine in the video above, though it extends out from the carb just a little further, and has a spring attached to it that pulls it in as the engine warms up.

    The filter can be found on ebay or amazon, or any lawn mower parts store, if it is a 5hp like this it should be part number: 27987, here's a amazon link www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-27987S-Filter-Element/dp/B0038U3GB4/ref=sr_1_3?crid=DCWS63F67VM1&keywords=briggs+and+stratton+air+filter+27987&qid=1576438467&sprefix=27987+%2Caps%2C185&sr=8-3 As far as the choke goes, your best method would be (in my opinion) to do away with the auto choke and work it manually, thats what i would do.
