I show how to repair a broken LED downlight using a replacement LED panel.
I also upgrade the LED ceiling light by adding some thermal pad to help it sink the heat away to increase the lifetime of the LED module.
Replacement LED Modules: defs.link/?u=3...
2mm Thermal Pad: defs.link/?u=0...
These LED modules run at between 36VDC and 38VDC with less than 300mA of drive current.

Thermal pads from old CDROM drives would work as well, you get around 3 per drive, enough for doing all those lamps with better (and free from ewaste) heat transfer. 5 minute epoxy also works well for this, though of course now the lamp is not easy to remove again. To pop those lenses out use a bamboo skewer, works well for me, or use disposable wooden chopsticks.

I use a lot of very expensive LED warning lamps from various top manufacturers. They don’t have anywhere near the life they claim and they don’t have enough confidence to offer you more than a 12 month warranty.

Crazy that these LEDs are not more reliable. I just bought a string of summer porch LEDs lights with palm tree covers. In a string of 10, 5 were bad right out of the box!!

Pisses me off how nothing you buy lasts anymore. Although I do not like them, or endorse them anymore, I still have several WORKING incandecent bulbs left in this house from when it was built in 1999.

Daveyk021 - the use of flouresent and led is over rated, yes they use less power etc, but you generate a huge amount of waste making and disposing of them due to them not lasting very long, like you I still have bulbs from over 20 years ago that work, I have had to replace the kitchen flouro and now led about 10 times in the past 5 years... which is really better for the environment?

@@TheDefpom Depends on the quality, I use fluorescent lamps a lot, but buying good brands, made in a good factory, makes a big difference. Have plenty of fluorescent lamps which do 10 years of service as night lights, and I am half way through the box of Osram Hungary and Phillips France lamps. Going to be sad when it is finished, as the newer ones are no longer made in EU, and have a much shorter life.

SeanBZA - NZ doesn’t import the good stuff for general sale, we seem to get all the crap stuff, even main brands are of poor quality, it doesn’t help that retailers seem to rip us off too, with massive markups so if something is of good quality it is so expensive that people don’t buy it.

Might be worth try a compressor with just a blower attachment on it and sealing the other holes with your fingers to spread the pressure on the plastic a bit. Just a thought

Josh lever - I don’t have an air compressor, if I did doing something similar could work yes, HOWEVER and I don’t mean to be critical this comment is more of an educational one, but having compressed air against your skin is very dangerous, it can get through the skin and cause an air bubble in your bloodstream, which can kill you, compressed air is actually rather dangerous, especially if you have a cut or something on your hands.

Adrian Higgins - yes that is my theory too, once I get my DC load up and running again I will get one of the spare drivers and test it’s output voltage and current, they are supposed to run at no more than 38V and about 280mA.
