5909 primes heavily, climbing Fassifern Bank in 1968.

Ойын-сауық

The cameraman is given a shower as 5909 lifts an early morning local passenger up Fassifern Bank in 1968. 59s would occasionally work this train around this period. Filmed in 16mm sound by Bernie Kent.

Did they overfill the boiler ? The safeties are blowing off. Good to see a 59 on a passenger working. Great film.

A rare thing to capture on film they opened the drains to try and bring the water level down how ever they could you can see the train drop it speed so sudenly

@@jameselliott1461 if my live steam loco primes its the method i use to lower the level in the boiler so the throttle valve isnt picking up water, opening the drain cocks helps stop the loco priming if the firman has overfilled the boiler plus stops the piston rods from bending and the chest covers from fracturing when water gets in the cylinders and creates water hammer, it works well and was captured in the vidio wich is very rare because its not often the firman overfills a boiler.

The reason you open the cylinder cocks is to remove the risk of blowing the end out of the cylinders, smashing the piston head or bending a piston. Because the boiler has primed, either by having too much water in the boiler or the water is soupy due to needing a washout, you run the risk of causing a lot of damage due to the fact you cannot compress water. The driver would have shut the regulator briefly to stop the priming. Another problem is the priming, is the water washes out a lot of the lubrication in the cylinders, which increases wear until you can build it up again in the cylinders.
