#59 Sandblasting An Old Steel Sailboat
Hi guys, When you own a steel boat there will come a time, if you own her long enough, where she will need to be sandblasted so your epoxy primer will have a good bond to protect the steel from rust and electrolysis. You'll also be able to see what kind of shape your steel plating is once you take her down to bare metal. We saved a ton of money, over $8,000 from the original quote, by finding a sandblaster and doing all the prep and painting ourselves.

Only Suzie and Jules can do a haul out, sandblast and paint the bottom in nine days with no drama. You guys are definitely the pros when it comes to boat maintenance. Emerald Steel is looking awesome for a thirty year old. Hopefully she will serve you at least another thirty years.
Ohhh..... A nightmare really but it must be done once in a while......
Looks like Christmas :)
darn !i was just down the road !It would of been a pleasure to paint on your Emerald...nice to see you here
Don't understand why you don't have 10X the subscribers. You two are the original boat building / ocean cruising / youtubing couple. Maybe not the first, but one of the first to put it all on the line and go for it, and for that, you have my up most respect!

They aren't pushing to have more subscribers as far as I can see. They have the confidence and ability to do what pleases them, not some bloodsucking advertisers!
When 'someone' sees Suzie filming and Jules working on the boat on the hard, they would be in awe if told that Suzie welded Emerald Steel from scratch. Building a boat together and sailing the seas together, I raise my glass to you both.
Emerald Steel is a perfect example of a well maintained sailboat. Looks as good as the first day you launched her!👏👏👏⛵️⛵️⛵️
Feeling inspired to do the same to my 60-yr old Dutch Trewes 3a design which needs the same treatment. Thank you from New Zealand Nelson area!
I saw a green hulled sailboat in the Sea of Cortez on the Salt and Tar channel and had to come and see if it was you, but guess not. Then caught ey of this video and had to see Emerald Steel with her new bottom. She is a beautiful boat after all these years!
Wish more of thr video eas the actual work
Very efficient, congratulations.
I have hauled out there as well. Touch and go with the tides. Doug is a good guy. It's too bad we didn't get a chance to meet back then.
You two are amazing!Still able to do your own work. Boy, that san blasting is a back saver. You both look great. Thank you for sharing the entire process. ❤👍👍
Still Watching !!! Love you Guys.
Thanks for posting and sharing.
Beautiful boat.
Boat maintenance is prohibitively expensive. Somehow you have made it work all of these years. Impressive once again!
30 year young and still a looker….well done!
WOW! All three of you look good. Nothing better than new paint on the bottom. Keep the videos coming and thanks. Steve rhome tx.
You have taken good care of your boat , she looks great.
Suzy Emerald Steel is my favorite sailing channel. You guy are wonderful. Role models really.
A stressful 10 minutes (of viewing). Pulling out and putting back. So many things could go wrong and end up crushing the keel, rudder, prop etc. Yet you two knew how to do it right, and so did the boatyard. I felt bad for the boat with the rust. Thanks for getting it all done in the span of one video. That log raft was neat to see.
Gives me the fuzzies every time I watch Beyond excited for my own boat. You two genuinely inspire
What amazing memories you have made from building Emerald Steel yourselves and all the places you have been till now and many more to come. Thanks for sharing and stay safe..Emerald Steel looks beautiful! :)
You Two are my favorites! Truly bonded in life and sharing your adventure together and with others! You should have thousands more Following you! Building Your Dream and Living it. Fair Winds and be Always Safe and Blessed
What "The Bear Den Photography" said! Emerald Steel's hull looks more or less pristine. How great it must be to *know* that your hull below the waterline is sound! You two are just legends as far as I am concerned. And looking so well!
Just to see Emerald steel is always great , you were so organized with the bottom job . There are now so many youtube sailing sites and so many of them are way over their heads when it comes to boat repairs and maintenence . They should watch how Suzie & Jules do it right !
Well done. Its nice to see when boats are cared for.
Another great episode guys, she’s looking great 👍
Well done !! Looks great!! Fair winds ⛵️

Hi Bernard! She weighs 32,000 lbs...a light weight😅 Good to hear from you!
i love the intro song ive been looking for it on spotify and cant find it... is it an original?
😃👍👏👏👏
Cheers to you.
One of the ways I worked my way thru college was by sandblasting and painting offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. After blasting the steel I sprayed on a zinc rich primer consisting of a 70 pound can of zinc powder mixed with 5 gallons of liquid. When we build locks and dams and other Corp of Engineer projects, the same primer is spec'd. Do you paint Emerald steel with a zinc rich primer similar to that?
May i ask what the sandblasting cost? I looked into it on the east coast of canada and it has me looking at grenada for a cheaper location, but i honestly dont know what a fair price is for our 36' boat.

how long has it been since the last time you guys painted the bottom? How do you prevent electrolysis? Do you use zincs? If so, do you dive down and replace them yourselves?
How often is sandblasting needed?

Hi Shawn, You should sandblast according to visual inspection of boat. If the primer is tight and in good condition then she doesn't need to be sandblasted.
😃👍👍👍❤
How many days did EmeraldSteel stayed in the boat yard ?

9days
tuck tape works great but is a bitch to remove.....
All of the other boats look so bland next to E.S.
Please tell me you don't have to do that every 8 months.....
Proof that Emerald Steel is a lady... She was wearing a skirt. 🤣
