    Hey, Kris Good to hear you're still happy with the XC90! That means I've made a good choice, as I'm driving a lot, sometimes more than 500 miles per week, and all the options that you have listed are indeed a "must-have" (Chicago winters are sometimes quite brutal, with lots of lake effect snow, and far below freezing artic temps)... I hope you'll have more years of trouble-free ownership experience! All the best, Mitch

    i wonder whether the D5 is quieter than your D4? Mine cannot possibly be called 'noisy' but the tyre noise is way more noticeable than any slight engine noise which is only really heard when accelerating to high revs. For a bystander standing on the street, the drive-by noise from the exhaust of the XC90 D5 is certainly quite loud and something like a tractor. I should know, because I have five tractors. However, inside engine noise is not an issue. Tyre noise can be a tiresome [see what I did there lol] on some surfaces. I have the 20" Contisilent tyres fitted, but they are still more noisy than I would like. As a comparison I had a 2006 Q7 for 80,000 miles and before that a 2004 Range Rover and before that a 2002 X5 and before that a 2000 Merc ML270. They all had tyre noise about the same as the XC90 with the ML having narrower tyres and the least tyre noise. The Range Rover and X5 had the most engine noise, despite being six cylinders in-line. All diesel engines. The Range Rover and Audi actually had the most tyre noise, but only after they had worn to 50% or less. The Audi ate premium tyres every 10,000 miles but cheap Korean tyres of various brands lasted far more but were unbearably noisy to the extent that I wished they would wear out sooner. I would certainly not buy a petrol engine car of this size and weight to cover significant mileage. Not in the UK away from major cities. In cities and particularly in Norway, the taxation situation may make petrol/hybrid versions competitive and a contender. Here in more rural UK and looking to the future, I wish they sold a diesel/hybrid which would be great for local journeys and town use while also being economical and having the range between tank fills of a diesel.

    The D4 and D5 are basically the same engine, so engine noise should be the same. The S90/V90 seems to have better engine bay sound insulation, so the D4 in that car is noticeably quieter compared to my XC90. They might have "fixed" this in the 2017 or 2018 models, meaning those XC90 have less noisy engines. I think the D4 is quite noisy when under load.

  • @hedydd2

    @hedydd2

    Then I think they must have fixed it. My engine is no more noisy from the cabin than was the 2006 Q7 and is significantly quieter than the BMW engine'd Range Rover etc, as mentioned. I'm very much impressed that Volvo has a double bulkhead between the engine bay and the cabin, between which are housed the fluids for something, probably brakes etc, and the wiper motors and so on. Wish they put as much design effort into really damping down tyre noise, which I would hope to be a lot less than it is in a 2017 premium vehicle. I note that 2018 diesel production from now on will be fitted with SCR/Adblue/DEF [or whatever its called where you are]. It will be interesting whether this alters the characteristics of the engines somewhat. It will allow them to meet Euro7 of course and may even allow even greater extension of service intervals if EGR volume is reduced. New Ford Ecoblue diesel engines have up to 35,000 mile/two year service intervals.
