2019 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum Full Tour & Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After two weeks of top-trim Volvos, it's time for TestDrive to look at something a little more cost-effective from the Swedish luxury brand.
Our Spotlight is on the 2019 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum. This three-row mid-size luxury crossover is positioned to compete directly with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. The XC90 we have is the entry-level trim offered in Canada, and sports the 2.0L twin-charged inline-4 engine good for 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Our full tour and review of the 2019 Volvo XC90 goes in depth with the important features and options selected on this vehicle, representing what a vast majority of buyers might be considering if they're in the market for this type of crossover. We explain the exterior design and features such as Volvo's Iron Mark, the front adaptive LED headlights with LED fog lamps and cornering lights, headlight washers, integrated wiper washers, power folding mirrors, keyless access, and power opening rear lift gate.
We jump in the front of this mid-size crossover to talk about the front heated seats, optional carbon black leather upgrade, IntelliSafe safety technology, PilotAssist semi-autonomous driving mode, panoramic sunroof, portrait mode infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM radio. We discuss some of the design and trim changes over the Inscription models we've featured from Volvo before.
We jump in the centre row to talk about the features found back there such as quad zone climate control, and the optional outboard heated seats through the cold weather package. We also take a look at the trunk seating to see if the 7 passenger configuration is good for larger families, or those looking for additional cargo room.
TestDrive also takes the XC90 T6 Momentum on a comprehensive road test including a 0-100km or 0-60mph test, and talk about how we found this vehicle to handle and perform on the road. We also criticize Volvo's automatic stop-start system on their non-hybrid vehicles.
We wrap up this episode of TestDrive Spotlight on the 2019 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum with our rundown of likes and dislikes for this vehicle, and some insight for the winter season here on TestDrive.

HI thanks for a great review! My husband is 6'4 and I am 5'1-so making sure the car I select can fit him. It would be my primary car but of course he uses it from time to time to haul things. Back seat head clearance I think is going to be an issue. I have a Chevy Traverse now but am looking to upgrade-seat and head restraint comfort being my top research. My biggest issue I have is the head restraint/seat comfort. With my Traverse, I have to put a back pillow so that it pulls my body and head away from the head restraint otherwise by design of the seat and head restraint as many other vehicles, I would drive in a concave configuration. I think it has everything to do with the fact that when you are short, where my head hits the head restraint just doesn't line up well. For long distance driving-without the pillow, I would be in severe pain. The lumbar on my Chevy seems a bit sad-not really a lumbar support I think it should be.Im short and have neck issues which with the US (as I am sure Canada has) that the new head restraint designs have caused issues with some drivers and also short people. SUVs I think are not built with short people in mind. I wish reviews would also include a slightly more in depth comfort review (head restraints and their adjustments, as well as the some of the seat and lumbar features). Maybe throw a short person in there too for a short person perspective..HAHHAHA

  • @PRNTestDrive

    @PRNTestDrive

    5 жыл бұрын

There isn't much comfort when it comes to these head rests in today's cars unfortunately. Most of them are just there to prevent your neck from snapping backwards in the event of an accident, and nothing more.

Every chance Volvo designed the auto start/stop with Europe in mind, which doesn't have four way stop signs (we manage to use these magical things called roundabouts). The fact that you can turn it off means it's irrelevant anyway. Still, it's interesting to watch car reviews from the other side of the Atlantic as the priorities are usually quite different to European drivers - I enjoy yours as you've obviously put a lot of time and thought into them. Got a S90 T8 coming in February, I hope it's as good as it seems to be.

I guarantee the S90 T8 will be excellent for you! We absolutely loved the one we had a few weeks back. But it's certainly true, the market where these cars are designed differs significantly from our use cases here in Canada. Volkswagen seems to have done a good job with their Stop/Start, we just dropped off the 2019 Jetta and it's system was excellent.

Nile, I am rewatching this review. I have exactly the same feeling about the BMW engine start/stop. As you approaching the stop sign, it decided to cut off the engine, then if needs to start again right away because you clear the stop sign and started to accelerate. Extremely annoying in residential streets with stop sign at every intersection....

Most people consider the Audi Q7 3.0T to be the T6 XC90's main competitor as opposed to the Mercedes GLE or BMW X5, which don't have a 3rd row as standard. The T5 XC90's are even less equipped than this T6 Momentum (FWD only, no 3rd row option, no standard digital drivers display, etc.). A well equipped T6 XC90 in either the R-Design or Inscription trims, offers so much more standard safety and technology features than a comparably equipped Q7. Audi, like most European luxury carmakers, continues to financially sodomize buyers with overpriced option packages. Audi forces you to buy the top trim Q7 Prestige just to have the still non-standard option of adaptive air suspension, full drivers assistance packages, and top tier surround sound audio system. My 2017 T6 R-Design had all of those options included for just under $70K (USD).

Toyota/Lexus is still ignoring our requests, and I'm not really sure what to do about it at this point. It's frustrating that out of the 3 different people at Toyota Canada we've emailed/called, no one will even give me the courtesy of a reply back. We'd love to get the Cadenza, Kia Canada doesn't have one on the fleet unfortunately but we'll see if we can find a local dealer in the Spring. And we'll definitely see what we can do about the luxury/premium cars! We're going to reach out to Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Jaguar Land Rover in the new year to see if we can get on their fleets. I also really want to get more 'classic' cars featured, even if that includes something like a 2014 Equus. We filmed a classic episode last week, hoping it'll help to reinvigorate the interest from owners to let us feature their cars!

Your point about the auto start/stop is valid, but, there's a bit of an explanation about the early off you're seeing. In Eco mode, the car will turn off the engine at around 5 kph or 3 mph. In comfort mode, it won't turn off the engine until you come to a full stop. If I'm coming to an intersection where I know I'll need to go almost immediately, I'll move the gear selector to manual mode until I start accelerating, as it won't turn off in manual mode.

Nobody is buying one of these cars “in case people come in from out of town”. They are for large families. As such, the main requirements for the third row is that the seats are easy to get up and down, durable, comfortable and that there is no useless equipment back there that a 6 year old would easily break. Headroom for 6ft people is of tertiary importance. I feel the review was critical because the space met these criteria. It would be more useful to kick the rear seats for 20 mins to see if they scuff.
