54321 - a simple relaxation or grounding strategy

In this video I share a simple strategy for relaxation or grounding that you can either use yourself or use to help others at times of high anxiety or distress.
It can be used to help prevent panic / anxiety attacks, dissociation or derealisation, or more generally just to help invoke a feeling of calm if our stress levels are beginning to rise.
It's a very simple idea where you count five things you can see, four things you can hear, three things you can smell, two things you can touch then take one big deep breath.
I hope you find this video helpful. Please take a moment to leave a comment about what you did and didn't like or sharing your own ideas or experiences.

I think this is great, because you can adapt it to suit your needs. I can already see that this will work for some of the children in our school. Thank you, Pooky.

Thank you for your video. I am a middle school teacher and I will be sharing the video with my students as we prepare for end of year testing. I am also sharing it in a blog post I am writing about test anxiety and how educators can help students best process testing anxiety. Thanks again!

This looks very simple. I have a female client with BPD who has a tendency of overdosing when she is bored/alone. Her attention span is very short. I have provided her with a journal and a tie dye kit. I think this can also help. I am open to other suggestions.

Interesting idea Pooky but don't think it will work for me as sounds are often the cause of my anxiety ;)As an aside, in thinking about my anxiety I have realised that I have been anxious for as long as I have memories. Further, though it seems obvious now, that my over-eating has been caused by my anxiety, rather than the other way around. Bit of a revelation to me

You may find that an adapted version of this works for you - or maybe not. It's not for everyone. I have been able to find a way to make it work for me now but when I was an inpatient I distinctly getting very vocal and angry with a nurse who in the face of me flying into complete paralysing panic suggested I try to name five things I could see... She was doing her best and I'm pretty sure my response was totally unwarranted... But yes.. I I'm kind of surprised by your revelation (in that I has always assumed that link was this way around) but that said, it can become a difficult cycle to work out the beginning and end of. It's great that you're learning to understand it more now though, understanding, questioning and a willingness to try new things are key to moving forwards. Sending love across the seas xxx

Sorry it’s taken so long for me to reply Pooky. Yep, an adapted version may help. I am willing to add anything to my toolbox that can help. Whichever came first, you are right that it’s the cycle that’s the problem. Do I overeat because I’m unhappy or unhappy because I overeat? I many ways it’s irrelevant as I am both unhappy AND overeat. So we have to deal with them both. My anxiety levels aren’t too bad at the moment but I am studiously following the path of avoidance ;) Sending that love back across the ocean + extra. Hugs
