#54. Frothy Resin Waves on a Wooden Lazy Susan - Using a New Heat Gun and Attachment
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Beachy transparent resin waves on a 40 cm (15.7 inch) acacia lazy Susan. The true colour is much more turquoise than the camera shows and the second layer gave it so much depth. It turned out so perfectly!
The new unbranded heat gun is 220V 2000W corded with temp range of 60-650C (140-1202F).
I bought this one: www.ebay.com.au/itm/220V-2000... (edit - this link doesn't exist anymore, sorry)
I used dark turquoise and titanium white pigment pastes, and DiamondCote resin from Just Resin.

I would stop in half! Wooden turquoise texture is amazing, too.
I’m just mesmerized by watching you do this!! And I’m also in awww, of your ease with these waves!!! I’m so envious!!
This is incredibly! I’ve watch so many videos on how to do this. The wait time of 20 minutes has given me more success. I can not even begin to tell you how many failed attempts I’ve had. Hundreds of dollars in resin. I have made huge messes and hours of cleaning things up after an attempt. I’m so impressed how carful and meticulous and seemly effortless you do this. I think maybe I saw one drop on you paper. You have really mastered the art. Your work is beautiful. I aspire to you that one day I’ll get the hang of this and have success. Thank you Nancy,

Ohh Nancy, thank you for your kind words but I feel your pain. It took me a good 6 months of trial and error to get any kind of lacing, and I'm still figuring out what works and what doesn't. If I wait till my resin is nice and thick like cold honey, I get the best results. Thicker seems to hold the cells without them blurring (as long as you don't heat it too much with the heat gun or a torch). Best of luck finding your sweet spot! I know you'll get there 😉

I so hear you!! I’ve ruined so many pieces by the last steps of the waves!! Cannot tell you how frustrated I was! She makes it look so perfect and with such ease…I could only hope! I think my problem is the resin I use. But then waiting for it to thicken up, then sometimes it just won’t blow out…I feel your pain!!!
Those waves are ON POINT! Beautiful piece of art! 👍

I have seen many others use different blues in order to achieve that transition from shallow to deep, but simply blending the one colour with the clear looks much more natural, the lacing looks great too, well done.

@Procrastipainter
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🥰 I know how frustrating that is! I'm using titanium white pigment paste from Just Resin. It's likely to be more pigmented and possibly heavier than the alcohol ink, which helps with the cells. FYI I've done a few comparison videos of different whites on the market if you're interested? There might be one you already have or can get easily?
I am a woodworker using resin for inlays and have been wanting to learn how to do this. Your video looks like I actually can do it! Thanks.

@@Procrastipainter thank you for the advice as I sure as heck would have made the first batch too dark! Question, i tried using some turquoise from another vendor a couple months ago and my wood was a pine, so a bit light yellowish. The turquoise against the light yellow looked very green. Do you have to take into account your backgrounds when judging which colors to use? I noticed you used acacia wood I think....
@Procrastipainter
2 жыл бұрын
For sure yes you do! Much more so for the transparent colours. You could always give the pine either a full white paint cover or white wash (So you can still see the wood grain). Just make sure it's water based, not oil.

Look at the picture after the job is done. How can this realism be achieved with a 1 cm thick chemical layer and a few colors of pigment? miraculous effect. gorgeous and unique. and also being able to do this every time. I can't understand, it's just a magnificent dimension of reality. It's not like it was made by hand. the moment of water flow is stopped and frozen. in one word AMAZING

@@Procrastipainter haha 😂 - you’d make a hell of a surgeon with hands as steady as yours! This is gorgeous! I tried doing a similar project but I couldn't get the waves. I let the white sit but it didn't seem to get thick. It just ran in to the blue and looked like clouds. This was after trying three layers, three days in a row. I figured out the second layer, that I was working in the basement and it might have been too cold. Also, is it possible that I waited too long after the working time of the resin? I mixed the white first but maybe I took too long to get to it? Is that why it was always too thin. It just wouldn't thicken up.
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
If it's cold where you're working, the resin will take longer to cure. But also it might not cure properly. From the resins I've used, their instructions say the room needs to be 20-25C. During the winter, I'll set a space heater to 21 about an hour before I start mixing. I leave it running for about 24 hours to help the resin cure properly. Unless you mixed the ratios wrong, it will thicken. It will just take longer when its cold.

3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😁 I got the heat gun and attachment from eBay. I don't think the link I got it from works anymore bc they sold out
Do you mix fresh resin with the white after the 20 minutes? Thanks! Really beautiful!
Ive learned so much using your technique. I have never layered lazy susans as I have always felt they need to be one even layer with no ridges - and as such the waves are not as pronounced at the edges. I'm thinking I could do a flood coat over once the layering is all done. (and I have got into the habit of saying to myself in that accent "tventy minutes later" lol). What would you recommend my guru?
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
LOL guru 🤣 That's awesome (and funny about the twenty minutes later)! If you want it completely flat, yes do a flood coat. You may need to do more than one though if the resin goes off the sides. Good luck!
That's stunning. Thanks so much for this sharing. Where we can get this wood "canva"? It's so much better than classic canva 🤩👌

It is beautiful & I love the layering bc it looks more realistic, but why don’t more artists use sand for the beach or tan or gold glitter? Still seeing that wood under there kind of defeats the entire beach scene for me. Thanks for the lovely video sharing your techniques & the nice smooth music in the background. It’s beautiful, but I hope you do one in the future with some sand for the beach area. You are very talented & I love the frothy waves you created.
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words Sherri 💙 I don't like putting sand on the food-functional items purely because it wouldn't clean properly. But the clocks I've done all have real sand 😉 I definitely prefer the waves over real sand too. And I've been trying to figure out how to do a golden sandy beach for a while now 😁
Your art is amazing, I love creative people. How do u know how much to measure for that piece? pigment to resin to hardener?
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😊 there are lots of resin calculators - I use this one www.justresin.com.au/resincalculator The resin comes with instructions on the ratio of resin to hardener. Some are by volume (mL) and some are by weight (g). You just need to read instructions for what resin you buy. And a general rule is no more than 10% pigment or the resin won't cure properly. I'd recommend adding a little at a time as you can always add more but you can't take it out
@overcome8628
3 жыл бұрын
@@Procrastipainter wow thanks, I am going to try a project. On my research there's a lot u need to watch out for, room temp, mix resin and hardener slow, equal amount of resin to hardener no eyeballing, and the resin is expensive.
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
All of that, yes! And there's more than one type so depending what you want to try, you'll need to make sure you get the right one. A tabletop or art resin is good for things like this video. Anything like a resin table (anything deeper than 5mm) or moulds needs casting resin - it's much thinner and releases the bubbles easier
Wow! It is very beautiful. Would it be possible to know the exact measurements of resin and the name of the products. Thank you very much !!
@Procrastipainter
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks 🥰 the resin is a 1:1 mixing ratio and all the products are listed in the description box 👍
Can I ask.. do you have any tips for getting more cells in the white after blowing and torching?? I’ve tried following this method (looks beautiful) with the exact same products! Using an Ozito heat gun (mid temp). Thank you!! 💙🤍
@Procrastipainter
2 жыл бұрын
If you're using the same products (DiamondCote resin) when you start mixing A + B, set a timer for 50 minutes. Wait till the timber goes off before you add the white (be sure to check it as you wait so it doesn't set hard before you use it). Try to blow a thin film of white from the front of the wave over the top of the clear, wait a little before gently torching to help the cells 👌 Oh and you will 100% need to practice. A LOT. Start on something small then work your way up to bigger pieces. Good luck!
