I had yesterday my first driving lesson with an HGV and one thing has been haunting me for the last 24 hrs now: how the hell do I take corners with this thing? glad to see that practice will become intuition over time. my instructor didn't specify that I can use up as much road as I need in order to safely maneuver. After driving over 10 years with a small car, I have the instinct of constantly keeping my lane, but yea, watching you makes sense, you just can't keep every time your lane in a 9 m long truck.

I have to thank you for this video. During the first 3 driving lessons the thing I struggled the most was not to hit the kerb when turning (in my case, right - we drive in the opposite side of the road). I was driving it like a normal car, never crossing into the other side of the road..on narrow roads it was a recipe to kissing kerbs all day long. As I got used to the gear box (4+4 with knock over) and the rest of the lorry I got "extra" time to look at those side mirrors when turning but still, sometimes, I couldn't avoid the kerb. It was driving me crazy. I've had my driver’s license for 11 years now and only touched the kerb once.in the past 2 weeks I had touched it x15. After seeing this video I understood why I was touching the kerb so many times..the mind set for driving this cannot be the same as a normal car, you REALLY need all the space you can get when turning including, sometimes, part of the other side of the road. This was the key. Yesterday I had another lesson (2h) and not once I touched the kerb. A massive thanks for this.

Remember my instructor (when I did Class 1 with rigid and trailer) - saying when turning right., to wait for your shoulders to be in line with the middle of the road you are turning into, before starting the turn.. , as a rough guide 👍🏻

Top comment, ‘if the road’s there use it’. That sums it up. I think of it like riding my bike, gaining max visibility by staying wide where I can on a left hander, tight in on a right hander👍👍

I'm currently doing my C+E from car and my first day (yesterday) was all guessing when to turn and didn't make much progress because either I thought I was wider then what I am or it looked like I was going to hit something when turning to my left. It's disheartening on my first day to of had it so stressful. Also I drive way too fast and that causes my cornering to feel stressful and cause prep problems. Glad to know it's not only me that thought I was going to hit something because it looks like I am really close to something when cornering. Good video, I will watch it again a few times before I start again next week.

Hi Hayley, started my training Monday with my tests on the Friday. Watch this video Tuesday, my instructor told me Thursday I wasn’t going to pass my test (three times) on the Friday so I watched this video again Thursday night. This morning my instructor still wasn’t confident with my driving. Took the reverse test, 1 shunt and passed. Then took the driving test - no minors, passed. Thanks so much for your videos they really did help me

Yer a good girl Hayley. Love ya for this. It was not just an instructional video of yours, but a virtual ride round mine and your stamping ground. Spotted our local LIDL store, and the route into Wednesfield which I have done many times just lately aboard the #25 bus, even coming via Ashmore Park where most of my family have lived since before I was even born!! You've even shown me the spot where my mum used to work with my late Aunt, the late Jean Mary O'Toole (nee Giddins, 27.05.1942-27.02.2001), right there in Planetary Road from September 1975 to December 1982. You've even driven past the local Fire Station, 254, Bushbury Road where I have just lately helped to run a group there devoted to Autism in adults. That's lovely of ya Hayley. Really love ya for this. You're not just a local girl, you're a good girl and a friend to boot. The best instructional video I've seen of yours in recent months. Love ya. Great stuff, and love hearing from ya. A very good morning.

First 10 minutes or difficult junctions were nervous times but the practice was invaluable especially if the first job was to get it out of a packed yard and put it on a bay with everyone watching . Best advice I had :-" get a few moans if you are slow & check and take your time but it's a lot worse if you hit something "

With cornering(Class 2) use as much road as you can and on the turn, the back axle wheels should be at the corner away from the kerb when turning left. For turning right, keep left and make a long turn over to the right. If the turn does not look achievable then try again from the opposite direction or try a different junction.

Good to see you back Hayley. Nice video for newbies ! Good simple explanations ( thats the teacher in you ). The way i learned was that the back axle is lazy & will cut every corner, so the front axle has to work extra to compensate. After a while it becomes instinctive and natural & you don't need to watch so hard - just the usual safety checks.....and depending on the truck, check the opposite side for the rear overhang (my current truck has an extra long body on a standard-wheelbase chassis) One other thing I would add......while sweeping wide at junctions & roundabouts be extra vigilant for impatient morons in cars, bikes & cycles that see a gap and make a lunge for it.....because they are often too stupid to work out that a truck needs that extra space to turn

One point that i don't recall you mentioning bab, is the tail swing when turning right. This was more evident at 21:45 and although it wasn't a issue, it could cause problems if there are larger vehicles on your inside. The whole vlog was superbly put though and has hopefully given wannabe new drivers an excellent input of how to position the lorry during the lessons. Obviously, your instructor is there to give you tips and advice and you will get it wrong at first ( clipping the kerb etc ) but it becomes second nature after a day or so and like you said Hayley, the more you do it, the less you have to think of how to take corners & islands.

Hey Hayley. You’re driving the test route what I had to do with GTG Wolverhampton. The Featherstone/Wednesfield route. There are some right tight turns in that area. Straight away I knew that area haha.

Same here ! My was done through British HGV Training Group at Cannock and one of my mates had his done in Aldridge but we both had the tests at Featherstone, so i don't think the route alters much if your test is based there.

That's right, some of the roads crop up in a few of the routes. I did my test in the same area too... :)

Great videos and very helpful . But here in Dublin doing the lessons on a rigid if you keep too wide whilst turning left you will get marked for this each time as a minor blue x on your test as they say it takes to long to correct yourself and no need to go out so far but I can totally see where you’re coming from Makes more sense because you obviously run the risk of back wheel hitting the path I’ve my test 29th this month 12 hours under the belt but I think the company who is learning me is not the best every time I do a lesson I’m with somebody completely different aswell which I don’t think helps🙈 .

I love driving my class 2 lorry So much fun. I’ve gave people a little freight at temp traffic lights where the works are on the left Coming head on with a car waiting at the red and then turning at the last moment in order not to hit the cones Love it It comes naturally I turn a lorry differently to how I turn a car or a van. It’s just a natural thing
