    Few corrections. All front sprockets are steel. Bikes make too much power for the smaller front sprocket to be aluminum. Try to never use a smaller front sprocket. The chain already has to make a sharp angle on a small sprocket. Making the front smaller will make the chain angle smaller causing more inefficiencies and more chain wear. Forget getting a front sprocket with holes. The amount of weight saved is nothing compared to the mass of the chain and tire. Spending more on a quality brand light chain will give you the best performance. If you want to change gearing, replace the rear sprocket.

    So w/ stock 525 chain/sprockets, I'm going -1 steel, +2 Aluminum on the rear only. How many miles you think? With the load spread over 47 aluminum teeth w/matching new chain to wear together should last plenty long. Isn't the prime benefit the reduction in rotational inertia not so much unspring weight? The weight difference is significant.

  • @ChasingTenths

    @ChasingTenths

    4 ай бұрын

    I’ll be honest , the weight difference isn’t significant but most race bikes have lighter sprockets and chain set up as they know they will change it well before it’s worn. Your set up Looks brilliant I am a big fan of the 525 chain sprocket arrangement , it’s the best balance between longevity and lightness … I can quantify how many miles you will get out of it but it will be plenty, nothing to worry

    I have a 2018 Tuono Factory with stock sprockets/chain. I’ll be doing a few track days a year. Is it worth converting to 520 and adding 2 teeth to the rear? Would I notice a similar difference staying with the 525 and adding 2 teeth in the rear? Changed my wife’s KTM 790 Duke front sprocket down 1, and hardly noticed anything. I don’t want to waste time or money unless I’ll notice the difference. She could use some more torque in lower RPMs, especially driving out of corners. Thanks mate!

  • @ChasingTenths

    @ChasingTenths

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Ryan, thanks for watching, the Tuono is already naturally set up aggressive mate compared to RSV4 . It’s set up to come out of corners quicker so don’t do anything to the sprocket teeth on that at all .... however, you probably in the future would want to go a teeth down in the rear for more top speed at snetterton or Silverstone (if you feel so) . So see how it goes this year, if you feel that coming out of corners you are actually a very aggressive rider yourself then go 2 teeth big at the back , don’t touch the front sprocket. . You will feel a huge difference. The difference in 525 pitch and 520 pitch isn’t that much , it’s 1.4 kg lighter but you won’t feel it on the Tuono as it’s naturally aggressive low down, yeah on a 790 , it’s better to do 2 up at the back . Feel free to ask more questions, or do some Trackdays and follow me on social media , chasing tenths on Facebook and let me know how it went , it would be interesting to hear

    Absolutely, if you get 520 chain You also then need to get 520 chain compatible sprockets.. but you can note the number of tooth in your existing factory fitted sprockets And when you buy after market sprockets , you just make sure you buy the front and rear sprocket with same amount of teeth. The number of teeth on a sprocket is engraved on the sprocket itself

In terms of teeth on the sprocket , you probably won’t notice too much with standard teeth set up , however just go one tooth more at the rear and you will feel the different . 16/43 is a really good combination. Obviously reducing chain size on a superbike is not without risk, paericularly if you dont buy top of the line strongest chain! And/or if you dont really keep up with maintaintence I mean there was a legitimate reason manufacures put a larger chain on to begin with! A more robust chain can absorb more abuse all other things equal and a broken chain can literally destroy an engine! And maybe put you in the hospital!
