Had a 335d for a couple of years and that thing is astonishingly fast and smooth with zero lag. Amazing i6 diesel engine so I can't imagine how good the m550d is.

I wonder how the 4 turbos work, the old 3 turbo plus an electric turbo for idle boost maybe. The diesel does sound good, throaty for an I6. One thing you didn't mention was the economy. Good performance when your in a hurry, and continent crossing economy as well. A car that can do 300+ kph, under 4 sec 0 to 100 kph, yet do 40 odd mpg while seating 5, and in a tourer also give you the extra luggage space. What a daily.

If only we had some tool to help us find such information. I think we should call it the internet. Companies could spread their marketing of their products with detailed information of how they work, and there could also be these things called 'journalists' who would actually write articles explaining exactly how these different products work. There could even be a kind of a site that works like a TV, with different content creators even making videos explaining things like BMW's quad turbo system, we could call that internet TV system "KZread".

Had the plessure to drive a 750d...quad turbos are crazy...this thing feels like a naturaly aspirated engine, no lag and still kicks in like a donkey.

RandomVideo That’s awesome! I’m really disappointed we don’t get anymore diesels in the U.S. Even when we did, they were only the mid-tier diesels, not the top of the line ones. I’m also surprised that this car isn’t faster. You would think with so much torque that this thing would have a low 3 second 0-60. I don’t know why it isn’t faster for how much power it has. Any thoughts as to why?

What a fantastic car - in Estate/Touring version, just about everything is there for all round use. Close to perfect.

That's impressive! Fast 0-100 and it's probably good for 300km/h with moved topspeed limiter. Great review!

But this is a McChip version. Imagine if AutoTopNL used filtered french fry oil (chips oil/WVO) instead of diesel in the fuel tank. :) Then we could say the McChip BMW M550d could really be a chip fueled car that can go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. Ok, I'll walk out now, my humor can be strange sometimes. Diesel engines can be powered by waste veggie oil, as long as it is filtered and used on a warm day or preheated. Maybe McChip could tune an M550D engine to run optimally on WVO.

Not impressed at all, waste of money on not cool. 4 turbos, should be producing MIN - 510BHP then a remap - 590bhp Stage 2 - 640bhp or a bit more.

@@patryksu11274 turbiny ;) wszystkie 6 cylindrowe diesle bmw były pancerne, ten 218km to jeden z wielu :) Świetnie nadają się do podnoszenia mocy i wytrzymują naprawde dużo. A co do m550d jeśli będzie tak samo udany jak poprzednicy, to na pewno szybko się nie podda. Zobaczymy za 5-10lat jak już nastukają troche kkm :)

The best bmw engine 3.0d was in E60 218ps...everyone after that had big problems...they have big problems with 550d F10 with 3 turbos...with 4 it will be laugh...it's to small engine for that HP...especial diesel...gasoline is ok...but diesel....it is stupid!

My father used to have this 745d with the M67D44 engine. I always thought that engine could easily do double the 300hp and 700nm torque figure it sported. Sadly diesel fuel is approaching petrol prices and the fueltype will be banned from most city centers so I won't ever find out haha.

I have the 335d f30 with remap running 371 HP and 720 NM.. It easily can reach 290 kmh so i think 310 with this beast should be possible

M550d N57 Quad Turbo 515PS 2050kg = 100-200 nach TACHO 10sek..... 2008er 330d N57 Single Turbo 400PS = 100-200 nach Tacho 9sek.... 1850kg (Touring) (300tkm ingesammt. 50 000km mit 400PS und 100tkm mit 340PS). Heftiges Beast mit 4 Turbolader. Hut ab..

Lot of people here talking about that the engine will not last no more then 50k or 100k. I disagree, with the correct oil and filter, good quality oil and if you change the oil on time it can very long time. The only time when the engine brakes is when people use cheap, not the right spec oil and dont chnage the oil on time. I personally have bmw 120d, i use 5w30 C3 castrol magnatec. change oil every 6 to 7k. No problem:)

Turbochargers aren't consumables. Properly serviced they should last the life of the car.

I wonder what would be the acceleration time if it didn't have to change 10 gears before 100

Its flashed to use the Alpina Speedometer/cockpit - thats why its blueish.

This is the best Diesel out so far stock this beast has 400hp and you can get 445hp just by pusting a few buttons with Wagner Performance and Downpipe easy 500+ and this thig pulls and pulls nonstop

100-200 would have been interesting too👍 Just can guess it on 16:46 to 16:55 around 9sec which is rly good👌

Does anyone have any idea as to why the transmission consistently short shifts? I don’t think I saw it go up to recline once in the whole video. It just seems like it’s missing out on power by doing that. I’ve driven some F30s that do that in Sport, but have never gotten an answer as to why.

Possibly because the torque starts to fall away around 5000 rpm and thus it's advantageous shift up and dig into the torque in the next gear. The redline and limiter would probably only be reached by manually shifting. The only time it would be advantageous perhaps is on a racetrack where you might want to cling onto a gear through a bend rather than have is shift up and then straight back down agian.

Actually, I usually have more traction on winter tires, only improving the acceleration of the line. But my car is also front wheel drive and has 190 hp, not sure if it makes any difference when you have 4wd. Maybe it does when you have 500 hp to put down..

Most cars with 190hp are slower with awd, at least midsize sedans. Awd increases mechanical losses and weight

nice car the technology and vision ... but I really don't know if the xDrive is pull her down or just the 200 kg more than 535d e60 ..But I have 535d e60 with hybrid turbos on 390 hp setup and I'm doing 100-200 in the same interval as this car 9-10 sec, this is 110 hp less, engines are the same , gear box is better on m550d by milion years but still ... I expected this car on 500+ hp to be about 7-8 sec 100-200

Does this have the fake active exhaust speaker? If BMW offered their high performance diesels in America it would change perceptions of diesels but they stupidly have removed all diesels from sale in America and they only offered the single turbo inline-6 and whimpy 2.0 TD.

Turi Shiva there are plenty of reviews where they care about back seats. He often drives special modified versions or high perforamnce models, cars that are meant to be driven. Being driven in the back seat of an e63 and an e200 is probably equally exciting if driven legally

Diesel engine can handle atleast double of its stock power without changing internals. Can you say the same about petrol...? Nope.

@@Rrrowl That is hilarious and bullshit. The today's diesel engines are at their limit. There is no more without destroying the engine. And internals cannot be changed either because from their nature they need hefty internal materials and cylinders and stuff to withstand the enormous torque. And due to being a compression based engine, not a hole lot of getting more is possible. We are talking about 4 freaking Turbos and 400 HP. The only other petrol engine I know of, that by factory has 4 Turbos, is the W16 in the Bugattis (Veyron and Chiron) and they deliver 1200HP+. This is basically the best it can do / it's nice, however looking at Golf III's with a straight 4 zylinder engine going with 1200HP as well is just crazy. No diesel engine will ever have that much power out of 2 litres.
