Julia Trotti Hi, may I know which lens you use for shooting this video in the room?
It never ceases to amaze me the length people will go to to produce a video we get to see for free. A great video that was very interesting, and gong to the point of using a non waterproofed lens in the rain is true commitment.

Hey Julia! Thanks for this video, I've been following your site and blog for quite a while, so glad that you are now on youtube) I've been using 50mm 1.4 really long and I can say that it's a good lens, but you are absolutely right about the consistency, it's not that stable, and mine is going out of focus way to frequently, so it's a common issue for this model. But it is what it is) Thank you again, hope to see a lot of new stuff from you)
I am so happy to have stumbled across your channel! I’ve been trying to start out but keep holding back because I don’t think I can do it but your photos and the way you teach have inspired me to stop procrastinating and just get started! I used the Canon 50 mm F1.4 on a Canon EOS M3 (Mirrorless) camera and the results were amazing.
Great Video, I ended up selling my 50mm f1.2 just couldn’t consistently nail the focus, tried on My IDX, 5Dmk4 and IDs mk3 didn’t matter what camera, 70% the shots where fine, but found for no reason a lot of shots didn’t hit focus, tried continuous and one shot, didn’t matter, especially with back light shots was terrible! Weddings I couldn’t rely on it. Glad to see the back of it.
Thank you, this question has been on my mind all week. So glad you and a few others are talking about this :-D

Would love your thoughts on the 1.8 vs 1.4 or 1.8 vs 1.2 I've shot with all three, but I'm on the 50mm 1.8 II I've only been shooting a few months so I wasn't able to properly diagnos the 1.2 or 1.4 when I tested them out for a weekend. I had been saving up for the 1.2 but with Jessica Kobeissi recent vlog about her loving the 1.4 it makes me not sure anymore. I've also done some research and I've read that the latest 1.8 is actually a faster focus and more durable than the 1.4, so many questions! My main income is actually traveling & shooting dance events so Ive been shooting with the Cannon SL1 and the 50 mm 1.8 II because the total weight is less than an empty cup of coffee however the 1.2 having quick focus and great lowlight is the reason I'm saving up, but I just started shooting portraits this year and am quite loving the process and wondering if I need the 1.4 as a stepping stone or if it doesn't really matter. Also curious, if I'm shooting say, 1.8, 2.0 or 2.8 how does the image differ with each piece of glass? Is the quality quite similar or is there a large difference. Epp a mess of questions, if you're able to respond in any way, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much! For a crop sensor cam what lens can be use to get the same results as the 50 mm with a full Frame? Would the 35m do? Or the 18 to 35?
How do you focus so good trough the viewfinder? Often when I try to focus on a spot of a model it looks sharp in the view finder but blurry when I take the photo?

Julia, how sharp is your 50 1.2 in 1.2 and 1.4? I have 50 L and 50 1.8 stm, and 50L is less sharp than the 1.8 wide open. Do I have a bad copy? I see a lot of people complaining about the lack of sharpness of the 50L below f2 ....
Would it be enough to just have a 35mm and 50mm in my kit? For portraits, landscapes and everyday use? Zooms are nice but they’re not 1.4 etc.
Do you have a glass/filter? in front of your lenses?
Have you checked out the Sigma 105mm 1.4f for Sony?

Here I am watching a showdown with 50mm lenses but SO AMAZED by the quality of this video, it's so film like!! Is this the Sony A7s mkii? How come you don't use your Canon 5d for video? Do you recommend the sony for cinematic videos cause it looks like a movie! Please answer if possible and thanks so much, from a curious happy subscriber ^^

6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My boyfriend who filmed this and all my videos is a professional videographer and yep - he's using the Sony A7s mkii. From his experiences (because I don't really have much experience in video) he started out on a Canon 5dmkiii which he used and made work for a while before upgrading to the Sony without looking back! By comparing the 2 video files, I noticed that Sony has a lot more information in the files, it's almost like editing RAW images but with video, and the file size is a lot smaller than Canon too, so it's much more efficient. Hope that helps :)

Melissa Joy it’s the lens. Probably a variable zoom I am guessing. You need a prime to go down past 1.8. There are no zooms made that do that.

I had both and honestly, the 1.4 was smaller and faster than the 1.2. You can't go wrong with either, but the price points are night and day. But if you get one used, you might find it for under $1000. It's always in my bag next to my 35mm.

How is the best lens of canon 5d
I totally agree with your comparison. That's exactly what I felt. I don't know it's because of weather proof, but EF 50mm f1.2 has richer, deeper and smoother color & contrast. It has really unique color & contrast, mood and expression regardless of the latest lenses.
My 50mm 1.2 pretty much stays on my camera. I totally agree with your comments regarding the 1.2 Great job comparing the two!

Is it good for street photography?
Do you actually shoot often wide open with 1.2? I find that if you don’t nail the focus something as simple as hitting someone’s nose will throw their eye off focus.
when you work with clients, do you choose the best photos are do they choose the one they like most and then you edit and send it to them? are do you send all the files to them?

Check out the last point in this video I just uploaded: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eH6YqdR7pM7IqqQ.html&t hope that helps :)
To get a sharp image with the 50. 1.4 you don't shoot wide open. The ideal aperture for the 1.4 is around 2.8 or 5.6. Bokeh is okay on it but if that's not what you're going for don't shoot wide open at 1.4. You'll notice image sharpness change when you change the aperture. Wide-open the slightest movement will throw the shot out of focus. So select single point shooting for autofocus. I had to learn this lens because it was my first introductory lens. My shoots were awful and not in focus. What helped was practice. Learn what you have before investing in more equipment.
0:33 - Let's do it! 😂😂😂

Yes! I used my San Francisco Lightroom Preset to edit these photos: www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets/#/san-francisco-lightroom-preset/ it has really blue and muted tones which I thought suited the shoot a lot :)
It never even occurred to me that the issues I’ve been having with autofocus were because of my lens. I was worried it was the camera itself! I use a 50mm 1.8... I’m definitely thinking about upgrading
@juliatrotti
6 жыл бұрын
You could try taking photos in a very controlled environment to test this out (such as a cup of coffee in a bright lit area of your house) to better see if it is the lens or the camera. If you feel like it's the lens you could also try hiring a different lens to see how it works! :)

for the 50mm 1.8 stm?
I have a Canon 80D and just purchased the 50mm 1.4 lens. This is a Crop sensor camera so I also purchase a 28.mm 1.8 to more mimic the 50mm length. Do you have any experience with the Crop sensor cameras for Portrait photography . I am just a beginner and want to get in to Portrait Photography.
@juliatrotti
6 жыл бұрын
When I first started photography I used to shoot on a crop sensor camera! I couldn't afford any lenses though, so I just used the kit lens that it came with! But you're on the right track - a 50mm would look more like a full frame 85mm, a 24, 28 or 35 would look more like a 50mm :)
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's helping me a lot. I understand that the lenses you are showing are one of the best for the portrait but can you suggest something for the beginners as well who are still exploring. Any suggestions around 50MM, 1.8 Canon?

Hi friend, I hope you well. It been a while. I am using a 5D mark 4 . I have noticed the 50mm 1.4 is very wide on the 5D mark 4 but if you using 6D with the same lens you get exactly 50mm range. @brandonj8018

actually it's 50mm on both cameras but the 6D's viewfinder is at 97% while the 5D is at 100. so that's why it appears a bit wider.

My first and only lens was the 50mm f1.4 for a couple of years and it worked out so well for me! The main reason I upgraded to the 1.2 as I mentioned in this video is because of the weather sealing and the reliability of the lens since I started doing a lot of client work and weddings which you often have no choice but to shoot even if it's raining! If you're really undecided, maybe you could hire/borrow them both and try them out?

It depends on what you want to shoot. They are both different focal lengths. The 50mm will give you the ability to shoot close up to get a great image and can give you a perspective on the landscape as well if you shoot with a little bit of distance from your subject. With the 85mm you will have more of a tighter, possibly, limiting space when shooting your subject. As far as quality the 50mm 1.4 has always been worth it for anyone who gets it. Just my thoughts, I hope this is a bit helpful in making your decision!
Hello Julia, fabulous video. I own all fast aperture L series lenses. As serious Pro, besides the higher quality photos of the 1.2, to me just weather sealing is reassuring. The 1.4 was fogging up and focus was inconsistent ! Yikes! That to me as a pro is scary especially if you are shooting for a high end Client.
