500th Night Banquet 2014

Admiral William H. McRaven, commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, delivered an inspired address to the Class of 2015 about today's Army and the responsibilities they will assume as the next generation of leaders. McRaven's speech, titled A Sailor's Perspective on the United States Army, starts at the 15:40 mark of this video of the banquet.
The U.S. Military Academy Class of 2015 gathered inside Washington Hall Jan. 18 with invited guests and academy leaders to celebrate 500th Night. The night recognizes the milestone for cadets as they count down the final 500 days until their graduation and commissioning into the U.S. Army.

That empty table is so poignant and beautiful. Remember those who gave the last full measure of devotion. You do not have to be an American to understand their sacrifice. We are safe because brave men and women stand on the walls and say:"Sleep soundly tonight. Nothing will harm you on my watch". They deserve our respect..

Great speech. Such a shame foreign policies are not as moral or ethical though. Young boys and girls, filled with morals and obedience and resilience willing to put their lives on the line. But let us also not be naive enough to think that they're guided by moral and ethical people like this gentleman. Sadly corrupt institutions need loyal followers in order to exploit them and forward their own corrupt agendas. Praying the world just learns how to coexist peacefully for a change.

I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer. Benjamin Franklin PBI - poor bloody infantry. From the desert, just an old trapper... Sir.

I'm sorry to hear that you feel that way, and I totally appreciate where you're coming from, especially given recent events in certain cities concerning events that were not fully understood by those who were protesting, as well as the fact that a disturbingly high (last time I checked around forty) percent of people in this country think everything is going perfectly fine. Don't forget that the American military that you hold in high regard is made of of people who were, at one time or another, regular American civilians. Also, a lot of amazing people are leaving the military due to the shrinking defense budget and our slowing optempo. Many of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who have carried the load in places like Helmand, Kandahar, Al-Anbar, Kunar Province, and Mosul are now transitioning/have already transitioned to the private sector, and can be found on main street, wall street, and the local PTA meeting. They are now part of America, and are no longer in the American military. In fact, Admiral McRaven is now the one of the most powerful people in the University of Texas System, having retired from the military last fall. Millions of veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are not part of the America that you deemed a "weak-kneed, knee-jerking hypocrite". America has problems that need to be solved, no argument from me on that, but to claim that all of America is a "weak-kneed, knee-jerking hypocrite" doesn't seem very accurate, especially considering the fact that millions of Americans have recently separated from the American military that you apparently are very reverent of. Given the fact that, without America, there is no American military, it's impossible that our nation is a "weak-kneed, knee-jerking hypocrite". If that were the case, then the American military would be a "weak-kneed, knee-jerking hypocrite", too.

Good day to you too! The way I see it: America's foreign policy =/= individual American soldiers. American culture =/= American military culture. Doesn't mean that there aren't men and women who aren't noble in America and doesn't imply that there aren't scumbags in the military. However, the quintessential point is that the two are one of the same. I see your point - and I can definitely see how one could argue that the US military is a microcosm of America (and this argument is undoubtedly right to a degree; I don't think this is a binary issue) but I simply don't think the the two cultures are identical (and further, that the American military's culture is far more grounded in character and courage than the American civilian culture).

  • @TheCandidCanadian

Joseph Suh Firstly, why do you believe a civilian culture would necessarily have the "character and courage" of a military culture? Seems you're seeking for something that, reasonably, wouldn't be there. Secondly, the dichotomy you present is the very reason why the USA is a leader among nations, like it or not. If an American citizen wishes to not be some BAMF terrorist killer, they don't have to be; that's their prerogative. I don't understand why you're so bitter. I'm a Swede living in a globally irrelevant British colony (going to Uni) and I wish this place had the same quality of identity that the USA has. It'll never happen though.

TheCandidCanadian "Seems you're seeking for something that, reasonably, wouldn't be there" > This argument is exactly right; I was claiming that the character and courage /reasonably/ wouldn't be nearly as prevalent as it is in society v. the military (the commenter above did, though). "I don't understand why you're so bitter." > LOL. I'm out of this convo; the commenter above me was respectful and stuck to arguments. Respond if you'd like. Later.
