500kW?? First Impressions from Gravity Charging in NYC | Quick Charge # 13

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Join us in the heart of Manhattan for a test charge at the new Gravity Charging Center, a major hub for passenger EVs and taxi/rideshare that boasts 24 stalls and up to 500 kW of power delivery. Not that any EV on the US market can currently take advantage of that much power, but it's always good to futureproof (and the flashy headlines don't hurt).

That's probably the entire fleet of BZ4x's on the entire east coast! lol

This is why I never see any in Boston... none of them leave NYC! Or everyone up here buys Subies so the Solterra is their weapon of choice. It was a trip.

@@plugandplayEV What’s going on with the Toyotas Is that New York City allowed EV’s to have a TLC plate, but there was a court injunction deadline in December. Prior to that TLC plates had been capped due to too many ride shares in the city. Many drivers wanted a Tesla but could not get one in time for the deadline while Toyota had the Bz4x available for immediate delivery.

Thanks for the look! A group bold enough to take on FastCharging in Manhattan. At first I was a bit put off by the cost, but then considering there’s no parking charge …., cost actually decent for mid-Manhattan where parking for 30-50 min might cost at least half of your charging session cost. --Add-on: just saw post from State of Charge Tom Moloughney - interviewing the CEO of gravity. Really interesting wide-open perspective on charging and the ‘full value’ of EV’s as part of the grid (bidirectional charging resources for load management). Worth the stop-in. Covered a lot of topics including a quick take on street side DCFCing.

Absolutely, I think I actually might have missed Tom by a few hours (or a day) with that flying visit! The cost is even standard by nationwide CPO standards now (EA and EVgo/Pilot-Flying J both topping Gravity in many locations), so for the heart of NYC with no parking fee I'd consider it a bargain. Those Toyotas might be doing the same while they can, slowly sucking up electrons to enjoy the prime parking space without a charge. There's still a lot to unpack on the distributed energy and available power side. I look forward to hearing more and seeing how much of the approach is validated, but for now it's still a bonus to have DCFC in the heart of Manhattan at solid power levels.

Awesome! Nice to have another charge point operator enter the market, hopefully for the better EV experience in the future. Can't wait to see this expand.

While I'm always happy to see new players shaking up EV charging, I would be cautious about the potential to be a bonafide CPO in any meaningful sense for the near future. One site in a challenging location is an interesting start and they definitely have a near-blank canvas with DCFC in New York City, but there's a lot of work to be done that will need the deep pockets of Google and others to achieve.

Thanks, Steve! It sucks that some of the only EVs that could push these to the max would struggle fitting into the garage. A separate entrance and attendant is a nice touch, though.

Yeah, I could see Lucids and Taycans sliding in with no real trouble but the Silverado and Hummer EVs would be a squeeze. Not really a mainstream consideration for the latter but Silverado EV is definitely being used by NY fleets already. Depot charging is probably a better fit for them but sites like Gravity might be needed in a pinch. Even so, if we disregard the power headlines and just focus on the facility, this is an electric oasis for the middle of Manhattan.

Looks like a nice & handy option. It would be nice to see more of these spring up. If they fill half the stalls with Toyotas you know the other stalls will have full power available. 😁

It’s a shame that BZ4X is taking up so many of these stalls since there’s so much power capacity available. Clearly Toyota has a nice fleet deal with the ride share company as they transitioned from Prius.

After the Model Y and Model 3, Toyota models claim the next three spots for New York state's EV rebates. That puzzled me slightly, until I saw the bz4x and RAV4 Prime taxis everywhere while walking around midtown.

Looking forward to your testing as Tom Maloughny encountered more questions than answers when he went to test it. The 500 kW charging seem to be more what the cabinets were capable of rather than the power available for delivery. So it’s marketing then because a lot of charging stations are rated for 500 Amps 1000 volts. Doesn’t mean they deliver that. What impressed tom the most is the compact factor that can be in most garages in a way that standard cabinets and dispensers can be

Just saw Tom's notification as this was uploading. Really good to get the inside track from the company itself but I'm still wary of the hype. Once it's charging a dozen or more E-GMP models at the same time without skipping a beat, then we'll be able to get excited for sure.

That's really no different than the "trick" that Tesla does with their V3 numbers. Each stall is technically capable of delivering 250+ kW and 700+ A of current; however, that power might be restricted based on the number of stalls in use (only 90 kW of power per stall at a site level) or the incoming power limits for the site. I would be interested to see what the actual site power (throughput) is for this Gravity site. At this point, I really think any site boasting these power levels needs to have at least 150 kW guaranteed minimum for every stall (so this would need to be a minimum 4 MW site).

Should have added the spec plate but it's made over in China through a company called "Shenzhen and Electric Power Plant", with Gravity Inc. listed as the manufacturing entity just below. Only made in November last year and these were installed by January '24, so there was some quick import/construction there. Tom's video for State of Charge does a great job getting to the questions we want answered. There's still some colorful language and hyperbole around the explanations but it will be an intriguing story to watch in the heart of NYC, however it plays out.

7:30 Those still look like HUBER + SUHNER RADOX HPC500 cables. They might be a newer generation, though, so the internals on these could be slightly different than the cables being used by EA and EVgo.

Makes sense. Should have taken a pic of the cable/handle prints but I was more drawn to the power cabinet area (and the sub-par toilet 🪠). Felt familiar as I unplugged and reholstered, though, so I'd say the weight and feel are pretty comparable.

I think we are barking up the wrong tree trying to build out so much DC fast charging. This is a great example of a place that would be a lot more useful with a couple hundred level two charging stalls rather than 24 fast charging stalls. and most situations if you’re going to a parking garage, you’re gonna be there for a few hours. each one of those charging slots is applying enough power for 50 level two chargers. Essentially, you could put 50 level two chargers in 24 different garages around the city for the amount of utility that this one location is using. this place is a fun novelty, but not very practical.

To my limited understanding The charger form factor allows scaling also correct me if I'm wrong if it can out put 500kw it could easily be separated m wired into more stalls in diff build configurations such as your suggestion as this is a test site.

Do we really need 500kW DCFC in a parking garage? Seems like most people would be there for 1-2 hours, which is way too much time to be plugged into a DCFC.

I think the "test bed" nature of this site probably has to be emphasized, but yes I do think a range of charging options need to be offered for parking garages. The increased throughput would be an advantage for fleets and rideshare users, though, once the majority of cars have charging capabilities that can make use of locations like this.

I wasn't up to speed with that when I visited but yes, just looked and this falls about 18 streets below the 60th St starting point for the congestion fee of $15. Will be interesting to see if their subsequent sites aim for sites above that level or outside of the zone, with access via FDR and the West Side Highway. There are several parking garages on those perimeter roads that could take advantage.

I didn't actually see if he had to authorize the session to start with an RFID card or his own device. They weren't bothered about me unplugging, so I don't imagine it would be a big deal if the customer wanted to plug themselves in too.
