500cc Duromax Engine Unboxing

Ойын-сауық

Today we unbox and take a first look at the new Duromax 500cc single cylinder engine. This is going to be our new favorite big block engine. This engine features a 94mm bore with a 72mm stroke. Has a 41mm intake valve size and 35mm exhaust valve size. This is a hoss of an engine. Would you get one over all the other big blocks on the market?

    I purchased the 500cc for my boys go-kart. I think it was a 212 predator that was on it. I had to modify this small go-kart a lot to make the Duromax fit but I think it will work. I've never done any of this before. This has definitely been an experience. The go-kart is only 150 pounds.

    I enjoy the channel very much, well done to you guys. One thing I want to touch on is the exhaust valve sizes, exhaust valves are smaller because the cylinder is under pressure when the exhaust valve opens, so the pressure differential is very large compared to what occurs during the intake stroke. Because of this much larger pressure differential you don't need as large of a valve to expel the gasses, the gasses are more readily forced out. Cheers

    Bike guy, you could be right, however I believe they are more specifically used to help prevent the filter from being clogged with larger particles too quickly (lengthening the usable service limits). Dusty sandy conditions can play hell on small engines, especially at construction sites. And they run just fine in the rain using the standard air filter cover found on Honda & clone type engines. Just my unsolicited 5 cents! 🍻

    This is long, get a cup of coffee, a honeybun, a beer, whatever. I’m not positive about this, however the purpose of the oversized air box with the three intake ports, may have a two fold purpose. The first, the three small intake ports, as DuroMax doesn’t know that exact end use of their engines, may be large debris excluders. Grass clippings, large wood chipper dust, etc. and they look as if they’re molded to create three small swirl chambers that could have something to do with dust separation. Secondly, air intake noise can be loud. Automotive engine engineers spend countless hours changing the note/sound of intake air for various reasons. In automotive and light trucks, many times it’s for a more throaty sound. Who knows what you’re running, as long as it sounds tough. Also a deeper note has a longer wave length. Longer sound wave lengths are easier on the ear that a than a short wave length, higher note. Deeper notes can be achieved with a large air box with internal baffles. Maybe the round conical chambers also have something to do with the note. To me, it would be worth a call to your DuroMax supplier. The more you know… Here’s a tip those with large loud compressors in their shops. In a shop I owned, I completely changed, made much quieter, a large twin V two stage compressor by installing, of all things a 200 series Volvo rear muffler on the intake. The first stage inlet, where the original filter was mounted was the same diameter as the muffler inlet and outlet. I welded some brackets to securely hold the muffler to the top of the belt guard, and ran a length of 2” Gates fuel fill hose between the two. Then installed the original air filter on the other end of the muffler. It made a huge difference! You could cary on a normal conversation, without raising voices right next to the compressor. Another noise reducer is to mount the compressor, on large rubber motor mounts. (Again with the Volvo aftermarket parts) I used four right side (large) mounts with studs centered on each side. Mark where the leg mounting holes are on the floor, and drill holes into the concrete deep enough for the studs. Hopefully you know what to do with the other side of the mount. In the end, the decibels were greatly reduced with the intake muffler, and rouge vibration noise from the legs being on the floor was eliminated. It also kept the compressor from wandering out of its assigned work space. Hope there was some good in all of my old man ramblings. Really like your videos! Bart

    That's quite the thumper! I (Yamaha FJ1200) used to go on day trips with my neighbor (1200 Gold Wing) and his wife who rode a Suzuki 600 single with a straight pipe. She kept up pretty well just cruising, but I would occasionally have to get a few miles ahead because it was stupidly loud and blew fireballs out the exhaust on deceleration. I guess what I'm saying is, a 500cc seems a bit large for a "mini-bike", but if we could get it to turn 12,000 RPM it could be fun on a go-kart. lol ;)

    So those cones on the intake look really similar to the cyclones you see on vacuum cleaners and the like. I think air is primarily supposed to come in the side, then water and debris gets flung out and falls down through the holes in the middle. Actually sort of clever if they don't just get immediately clogged.

It is 22.87 Nm (Newton Meters) 22.87 ÷ 0.73756214927727 = 31.00755647833893 ft. lbs. but it should be stock with exhaust and intake 25 hp + 37.5 ft. lbs. and 500cc engines range from 31 to 56 lb. ft. of torque. This is capable of up to 56 ft. lbs. and 41.3114 hp with heavy modification!

    Sorry, that's not why. Actually, the exhaust port is always smaller than the intake because hot air flows twice as fast as cold air. For example, look at the air vents on a home without central air conditioning, small vents. Homes with air conditioning need larger vents about twice the volume. The reason hot air flows twice as fast is because the molecules are moving faster and it is less dense.

    I need to line you out on what makes a hemispherical designed head. One of the main things is the valves. Your intake valves are on the intake, side of the head and your exhaust valves are on the exhaust side of your head. The piston is supposed to be a domed piston, and the spark plug is supposed to be in the center of the head.

  • @nerd1000ify

    @nerd1000ify

    9 ай бұрын

    The splayed out valves on this thing do in fact look like a hemispherical design. Edit: after seeing him pull the head, its a hemispherical for sure. Just a fairly flat one. The plug is offset a little to clear the valves, and they have used a dished piston to reduce the compression ratio.

  • @cozy_Fozy

    @cozy_Fozy

    9 ай бұрын

    Ted, these are lawnmower engines, not muscle car engines. The term hemi is used to describe the valve arrangement, where the valves are not parallel to each other on a flat plane, the valve stems are making a V shape if you will, which angles the valve seats to allow a semi-round or hemispheric combustion chamber. Piston design is irrelevant in this scenario. 🍻

    The fuel solenoid needs to go, I have issues with those sticking open, filling the cylinder and crankcase with gasoline.

    Note: Speedway runs 500cc motors and they typically put out 70 to 80 HP. Just saying.

    Isn’t Gravy Bones powered by a 440 now? Try this on it or Gravy Bones 2.0.

    There's zero aftermarket support for this engine at this point. It's not even close to a 390, 420, 440, or 460. Block, crank, rod, piston, head are different than the 440. The short skirt piston won't accommodate any billet rod made. ARC flywheels won't fit the crankshaft. The carb has something like a 28mm venturi. Everything is BIGGER.

    I thought you would put it on the DYNO Fresh Out the Box ?? Now stick ya Index Finger in to the air and make 2 Circles and say whoop de doo then 3 circles and say Whoo Doop De Doo ok Yea That is what the 3 Intake Ports on the Air Intake you were asking about is that it gives the Incoming Air a SWIRL Effect so 1 more time Now Finger in the Air Whoo Doop De Doo Have a Nice Day RED
