Its not just bad luck, in a hardcore world its about preparation more than anything else, digging straight down is not bad luck, because their is a known risk in doing that. There are of course ways you die in the game by accident like maybe u mess up the water bucket clutch which comes with practice, but if you didnt have a bucket to clutch with in the first place... then you had it coming lol.

I knew that you can't sleep in the nether or the end; yesterday the new guy on our server was in the end and asked if we needed him to sleep and we all said NO DON'T EVEN TRY IT then went back to our own stuff. I realized a little while later that I'd never actually seen what happens if you try, so I dumped all my stuff and headed to the nether...put my bed down, clicked on it, BOOM!!!!! and everyone had a good laugh.
